SECO President Dr. Neil Draisin Received Distinguished Alumnus Award from College of Charleston SECO President (and former President of COVD) Dr. Neil Draisin, of Charleston, S.C., was honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College of Charleston Alumni Association at their Annual Awards Gala on Nov. 10, 2011. e Distinguished Alumnus Award recognizes an alumni member who has made significant contributions to his or her profession or community…. “It’s with great pride that I accept this award from the College of Charleston. I am truly honored to be recognized by my alma mater and to be in the company of other distinguished award recipients” said Dr. Draisin. OVD Editor, Author, Lecturer and Photographer Dr. Dominick Maino, editor of Optometry & Vision Development, has been very busy on the national level representing the interests of our patients and potential patients, as well as lecturing and publishing. Here is a small sample of what he’s been up to: Paper presented at COVD Annual meeting (with colleagues Drs. Darrell Schlange and Brian Caden): e Fischer Fixtest for Fixation and Saccade Reaction Time Differentiates Between Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Adult Patients; Educator, Preceptor, Researcher, Author and Techno-Geek! Optom Ed; You can help your Patients See 3-D. Rev Optom; Poster presented at the AAO meeting in Boston (with Drs. Schlange & Caden): e Interrelationship of Five Oculomotor Diagnostic Tests and their Associated Binocular Vision Correlates; Information Technology Literacy: e Fourth R. Optom Ed; Asthenopia: A Technology Induced Visual Impairment. Don’t make up your mind till you’ve worn the lenses for at least a month…” She also passed the first administration of the American Board of Optometry examination and became a Diplomate, American Board of Optometry. SECO President Dr. Neil Draisin Received Distinguished Alumnus Award from College of Charleston

A Visit to IsraelDr. Gary Etting visited Dr. Robert Lederman’s

office in Israel recently. Dr. Etting is watching Avi Portnoy work with a patient (photo 1). Avi Portnoy was Dr. Lederman’s patient 6 years ago and then became a therapist. Later Avi enrolled in Optometry

at Bar Ilan University where COVD Fellow and OVD Journal Review Member, Dr. Ken Koslowe was amongst his lecturers. Avi plans to register with COVD and start his Fellowship process. (Did you notice the Marsden ball with Hebrew letters written on it in photo #2?

COVD Fellow Received NORA FellowshipDr. Derek Tong became the eighth Optometrist

in the world to receive the prestigious Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association Fellowship (FNORA). To receive this fellowship, Dr. Tong com-pleted over 32 hours of Clinical Skills courses in neuro-optometric rehabilitation; the extensive testing process also included 3 different presentations over the

course of 5 years, an independent study and a written exam. In addition, he had to publish a paper in a peer-reviewed journal. His paper is available on line at the COVD website: Optometry & Vision Development Vol. 41 (3) 2010. Tong D. and Zink C. Vision Dysfunctions Secondary to Motor Vehicle Accident: A Case Report.Dr. Tong was presented with this award at the NORA annual meeting held at Atlanta in April 2011.

In the NewsDr. Sharon Snider noted that her satellite

practice in Columbus, Mississippi was featured in the Commercial Dispatch, and the following month the local television station ran a segment about the practice as well.

OT Magazine Features Optometrist on the Cover

Dr. Bryce Applebaum, the son of Dr. Stan Applebaum was featured on the cover of Advance, a magazine for occupational therapists. A story on the “Maryland-based therapists ‘marry’ optometric vision therapy and OT for significant results” also was provided.

LecturesDr. David Cook gave his lecture, Maximizing

Stereopsis in Strabismus, an OEPF Regional Clinical Seminar in Oswego Illinois to a standing room only crowd.

Dr. Phil Bugaiski spoke on Vision and Learning (Curso de Vision y Aprendizaje) in Mexico City at the office of Eira Vilchis FCOVD. Optometrists, vision therapists, psychologists, speech therapists, teachers, and a neurologist were all present.

Greek Optometrist, Vassilis Kokotas was an invited speaker during the 37th Annual Meeting of the European Pediatric Ophthalmological Society. His lecture “Low vision rehabilitation in childhood: How to apply neuroscience in optics” had more than 140 OMDs attending the lecture.

Dr. Desiree T. Hopping recently lectured on “Vision and Learning” to a graduate class of special educators at the University of Houston - Clear Lake.

Dr. Jeff Getzell spoke during the Barbados AutismOne Conference. His topic was “Autism: The Vision Connection”.

Dr. Carol Hong gave three-two-hour lectures at the Monterey Symposium (California Optometric

Dr. Larry Lampert presented 2 two-hour courses including The Pro’s Edge: Vision Training for Golf and Vision Training for the Primary Care Practice at The East/West Eye Conference, as well as, a one hour course on Sports Vision Training for ALLDocs which is the Lenscrafters leasing doctors organization in Boca Raton, Fl. He was also featured in a Channel 10 story: Functional Vision Rehabilitation Resolves Common Problems, Therapy Improves Variety Of Skills, Abilities. Dr. Lampert was on The Balancing Act to discuss the relationship between eyesight and scholastic performance.

Dr. Jason Clopton presented 4, two-hour lectures at The East-West Eye Conference as well.

Dr. Marc Taub (and friends) gave courses and workshops at the AAO meeting in Boston (Clinical Workshop: “Getting the Most Out of Retinoscopy at Distance and Near.” Harris, Paul A., Taub, Marc B., Steele, Glen T. and “Vision Therapy in a Primary Care Practice: A Systematic Approach to Optimal Patient Care.” Damari, David A., Taub, Marc B., Dumas, J.) OVD Editor, Dr. Dominick Maino spoke on 3D Vision Syndrome at the AAO as well.

The National ACBO Vision Conference featured COVDer, Dr. Curt Baxstrom who gave several hours of lecture on a variety of topics.

Dr. Neena Gabrielle spoke during the Integrated Listening Services conference in Denver.
