sustainable Green Printtaking the Next step to improved environmental Performance

The contents of SPH’s Environmental Charter are not just pretty words – they are a very real commitment to reducing our impact on the environment. So, in line with this commitment, SPH are very pleased to announce that we have commenced implementation of the Sustainable Green Print (SGP) management system.

Sustainable Green Print is an environmental management system that has been developed by the Printing Industries Association of Australia. This is a first for the printing industry, and allows printers to not only manage their environmental impact better but also to receive public recognition of their environmental performance.

Narelle Monaghan attended one of the first training programs in the new industry standard on behalf of SPH in June. ‘One of the first things that struck me was the integrity of the accreditation system,’ Monaghan says. ‘Too many green logos are abused throughout the world, but if you see a company with the SGP green ticks then you can be sure they have worked very hard to earn it’.

Any company wanting to be accredited to the SGP standard is externally audited by a third party. They are then granted a number of ‘green ticks’ depending on what level of management system has been implemented.

SPH is striving for Level 2, which focuses on:• waste,• recycling,• energy,• water,• incidentmanagement,• storageandhandlingofprintingchemicals,• airemissions,and• considerationofneighbours.

A documented system has been established that lists the major environmental risks in each of these areas, and a list of environmental targets and actions. Records and other evidence must be kept to prove that these targets have been achieved.

‘SPH is already meeting many of the requirements of the SGP system’ says Monaghan, ‘but we need to document this and put systems in place to ensure they continue to improve. We are really looking forward to being able to demonstrate our high standards, with the green ticks to prove it.’

supporting New Hope international New Hope International (NHI) is a registered charity in Australia that networks Christian schools in Australia and New Zealand with schools in poorer regions, including Africa and the Pacific. SPH is delighted to be able to assist NHI in the formation of a new support group called ‘Corporate Friends of New Hope International’.

NHI is seeking to help change the desperate situation in which so many of the children of the world live. However education alone will not be effective, so NHI is finding ways to assist through sustainable community development and transformational leadership training in local communities.

To help it in this huge challenge, NHI is inviting compassionate businesses to become Corporate Friends who will work with it in finding solutions to the problems of poverty.

Recently, SPH was able to make the first donation to NHI Corporate Friends and presented a substantial cheque to Rev. Bob Frisken, the President of New Hope International.

If your company would like to join Corporate Friends of NHI and SPH in this endeavour, please contact David Ferguson, Director of NHI on 02 6624 4191, 0401476142 or at [email protected] or contact Neil Armstrong at SPH on 02 8732 7500.

Rev Bob Frisken gratefully accepts a cheque from SPH MD Neil Armstrong – the first payment for NHI Corporate Friends.

Which is Greener: Paper or Digital? the Answer May surprise YouArcticle taken from zdnet.com, Oct 26, 2009

We often assume that anything we can do to reduce paper consumption is good for the planet. But what about the significant impact of digital waste? Don Carli – Executive Vice President of SustainCommWorld LLC and Senior Research Fellow with the Institute for Sustainable Communication:

“Other than pushing the ‘cool’ factor, one of the main selling points being made by marketers of eReaders is that they are greener than print. It is little surprise that the common view held by consumers who don’t know the backstory is that going digital means going green and saving trees. Many are in for a rude awakening. When subjected to ‘cradle-to-cradle’ life cycle analysis, eReading is not nearly as green as many naively assume it is.”

“There is no question that print media could do a better job of managing the sustainability of its supply chains and waste streams, but it’s a misguided notion to assume that digital media is categorically greener. Computers, eReaders, and cell phones don’t grow on trees and their spiraling requirement for energy is unsustainable.”

“Making a computer typically requires the mining and refining of dozens of minerals and metals including gold, silver, and palladium as well as extensive use of plastics and hydrocarbon solvents. To function, digital devices require a constant flow of electrons that predominately come from the combustion of coal, and at the end of their all-too-short useful lives electronics have become the single largest stream of toxic waste created by man. Until recently, there was little, if any, voluntary disclosure of the lifecycle ‘backstory’ of digital media.”

“Sadly, print has come to be seen as a wasteful, inefficient and environmentally destructive medium, despite the fact that much of print media is based on comparatively benign and renewable materials. In addition, print has incredible potential to be a far more sustainable medium than it is today… and a truly digital medium as well. Despite its importance to business, government and society, print has been cast in the role of a dark old devil in decline. Digital media has been cast as the bright young savior on the rise.”

“Ironically the future of digital media and eBook readers is likely to be based on flexible polymer electronics manufactured using printing presses rather than silicon semiconductor fabrication technologies. In fact, the next generation of eReaders will most likely be digital AND be printed.”
