WHAT’S INSIDE

Valued members, your Trustees, Administrator, newsletter editor and webmaster join me in welcoming you to our first newsletter of 2016.

We trust your new year is off to a good start and wish you continued good health, fun, and safety throughout the entire year. Yes, these are many of the words from 2015’s Q1 newsletter, but they are still most appropriate!

In our last newsletter for 2015, we noted with a sense of commitment our Trustee and support team remain motivated to improve our deliverables in the form of the newsletter and website. Lesley Baumann has “spruced” up the site and works closely with Sue Schweitzer, Barb Miller, and Greg Jump in keeping the information up-to-date. Each Trustee has a role in contributing content to the newsletter. Barb Miller has worked very hard to keep up com-munications with the many contact groups all over the US. Ken Carr spends a lot of time in researching and presenting interesting historical articles about NCR and humorous tidbits as well. More on that from Ken Carr and Greg Jump in Q2.

Our other important deliverable is our Annual Meeting scheduled for September 22, 2016. As noted in the last newsletter we listened to your feedback for the 2015 meeting and will be implementing some format changes while keeping to our by-law and fiduciary requirements. We will return to the Presidential Banquet Center in Kettering, Ohio for the good food and service. We anticipate another great program.

By the way this will be our 20th Annual Meeting of the NCR REA. Who would’ve “thunk it”?

Have a great year, and we’ll see you in September.

Best regards,

Chuck

H appy 2016 and welcome to the 1st quarter newsletter. I hope that all of you ended 2015 with joyous holidays. The photos from members in this issue certainly illustrate the

celebratory spirit of that season.

Speaking of seasons, there is a light at the end of win-ter’s tunnel. In the meantime, I believe Ken Carr’s tale about the transformation of a Dayton neighborhood will have you thinking about spring flowers.

Best wishes,

Yes, I’m sure you do know that John H. Patterson was philanthropic toward many interests. He was gen-erous to his employees, benevolent to his factory neighborhood, a friend of charity and a humanitarian to his community. The place he chose to carry out his business was important to him and he wanted nothing but the best for the city of Dayton and its people. As charitable as he was there was always a benefit to the

company involved in the desired outcome of his actions. You might say there were always multiple benefits.

Early on he realized that he, representing management and the workers representing labor, had both been trying to get the most for the least from each other with little satisfaction on either side. His trained workers were leaving because working conditions at NCR were no better than those at other companies. He decided he would no longer treat his employees as a commodity as one might the iron, wood, machinery, buildings, etc. that he used in his business. He also felt there was a lack of knowledge among the work force about the cash register business in general. He came to believe that a happy, healthy, contented, and knowledgeable worker would produce a better product with more pride and satisfaction in the job done. He also believed that a contented worker was one who was comfortable with his job, with his neighborhood and with the city he lived in. Things had to change.

These changes in the working conditions required him to move into an uncharted area. There was no “best practices manual” to rely upon. There was nobody to copy. He was working in a new field. He was also courageous enough to brave the ridicule from other titans of the manufacturing industry as well as to see beyond the mistrust of his own workers whose conditions he was trying to improve. He made many improvements to the working environment and to the worker benefits (he called them welfare programs which I’ll detail at a later date). The changes he made were slowly acknowledged by the business world and some years later Forbes Magazine recognized Mr. Patterson as “America’s Best Employer” and NCR as one of the best places in America to work.

The Patterson property in the south of Dayton, where he built his new factory, just happened to be near one of the worst neighborhoods in the city. The homes were run down, the streets were ill kept, fences needed mending, and yards were overgrown. “Slidertown” was not a pleasant place to live and yet many of his employees owned or rented homes there. His business was growing and each day customers and potential customers were visiting. Business leaders, pol-iticians, entertainers, and other well known men and women came to see his new factory. The factory itself was every-thing visitors had heard it was and yet the surroundings were not at all pleasing to the eye.

Mr. Patterson decided that perhaps the best thing to do was set an example for the neighborhood and the city. So what did he do? He hired a professional. Not just any landscaper but Mr. John Olmsted who had designed the landscaping for the Vanderbilt family home “The Biltmore” in North Car-olina and the Roosevelt family home in New York as well as being the chief landscaping architect for the Chicago Worlds Fair. Following a landscaping plan, the lawn of the factory was seeded, shrubs were placed near the buildings, trees were planted around the grounds, the buildings were painted and decorated with flowers boxes at the doors and under windows. The factory grounds became a landscape showcase for all to see.

Some might think that the prospect of a donut is really its own reward, but Krispy Kreme is out to sweeten the pot more than it already is, thanks to a new mobile rewards program.

Backed up by the NCR Engage Mobile platform, the new program should give Krispy Kreme a whole new weapon to compete in the tightly-packed breakfast market.

Users will turn to the Krispy Kreme Rewards app for said rewards, where they will be able to engage a host of ser-vices including marking and finding locations, and getting notifications via the “Hot Now” light, the universal signal to Krispy Kreme enthusiasts that the donuts are fresh out of the oven. Krispy Kreme has been testing this solution at various locations, but by the end of the year—now just under a month away—all users should be able to get in on the Krispy Kreme joy.

The combination of the Krispy Kreme app and two features from NCR—not just NCR Engage Mobile but also the NCR Aloha point of sale (PoS) system—gives users the power to get details about Krispy Kremem offers, pay from apps, and earn points for every dollar spent on that sweet glazed joy. Several offers will be on hand to exchange for those points, and a special birthday surprise will also be in play as Krispy Kreme celebrates with you.

NCR Hospitality’s president, Paul Langenbahn, offered up some comment as to why Krispy Kreme turned to NCR, noting that those restaurants that aren’t actively chasing the “omnichannel consumer engagement” that customers want—which is really just a marketing-speak way of say-ing “being available on all the platforms customers want, whether it’s Web, mobile, or physical store”—stand a real chance of being left behind amid all the companies that will.

Indeed, we’ve already seen Dunkin Donuts rush to get an app in play so that it can better compete with Starbucks and the growing numbers of fast food emporiums turning to breakfast like Taco Bell.

For Krispy Kreme to not have a similar mechanism afoot would leave it trailing its competitors, and that’s not a po-sition most businesses in highly-competitive markets want

to be in. There are a lot of options for those seeking a quick breakfast on the way into work these days, including some options that wouldn’t ordinarily be considered.

That does contribute to a market with plenty of product diversity, though; anyone who actually wants a break-fast taco from Taco Bell comprised of a waffle stuffed with scrambled eggs can get hands on it. That also makes for a market in which it’s difficult to differenti-ate; anyone who, for whatever reason, can’t get a hold on a Krispy Kreme donut can easily find replacements from any of several other roughly equivalent options.

Therefore, Krispy Kreme has to keep up with its competitors at the very least, and work to be the first to the market with new innovations that others must imitate in order to hold out. This is evidence enough of that.

Still, for Krispy Kreme users eager for a bit of con-venience and technological advancement, the new mobile app should provide plenty of value. The includ-ed freebies on a birthday can’t hurt either, and should help keep Krispy Kreme a go-to source for quick tasty breakfasts and assorted snacks for some time to come.

the tale enddid You know? (Continued from page 3)

Now Mr. Patterson set his sights on Slidertown. Using the factory property as an example, he distributed pamphlets in the community offering NCR’s help to the residents to improve their property. He met skepticism at first, but when he made available his groundskeepers for planting and as instructors, offered Sunday landscaping lectures on company property, offered seed, shrubs, trees and other plants to the resident at cost, slowly Slidertown began to improve. Over time the area became a show place community. It had its own community center, library and adult school. Property values rose to become among the best in Dayton and the neighborhood became one of the most desirable places in Dayton to live. To celebrate the transformation, the name was even changed from Slidertown to “South Park.”

Mr. Patterson had improved the living condition of many of his employees, he had improved both the grounds of the fac-tory and the neighborhood around his factory, and his factory was now the showplace he desired in the setting he wanted. It was a win-win-win situation for NCR, the employees, and the city.
