    Dear Friends,

We are welcoming you to our 7th issue of newsleer, digitally available and also printed for the parcipants toISPRS SC 4th Internaonal Summer School which is takingplace in Warsaw, Poland between 13-19 July.

SC is connuously developing andas we gain more experiences andexplores new sights, our organi-zaon is becoming more profes-sional. The posive commentsfrom the society and our mem-bers, prove that what we have

been doing is right and thats the major movaon for us.Another indicaon recently is our newsleer received an

ISSN number; from now on it will be listed in libraries cat-alogues. SC Board is working on some major changes tothe look of the website which will come into eect in thenext few days. Finally, a lot of interest has been shown bydierent countries to the 4th Summer School in Warsawand shows us that the theme and content is geared to itsmembers, I believe it will expand our vision and knowl-edge of our changing environment. Also summer schoolsprovide unique possibilies to learn more from culturalaspects and meeng new people with similar interests.

The rst ISPRS Student Consorum Conference right af-ter the summer school will provide a chance for the peerreview manuscripts presentaon and publicaon. At last, but not the least SC Board will have the opportunity tomeet and discuss with the parcipants to plan our needsand be prepared for the upcoming years of the SC.We look forward to meeng you in one of our acviesand please spread the word with your colleagues.

In this issue we were talking with honourable professor at the Leibniz Universitt in Hannover (Germany). His professional interests comprise all aspects of digital pho-

togrammetry & remote sensing, image understanding and their connecon to GIS. He is acvely involved in the ISPRS organizaon, being chair of WG IV/2 (Automac

Geospaal Data Acquision and Image-Based Databases) at the moment; he won several presgious awards on his work and had been involved in many dierent

    research projects.

    Interviewby Ura Kanjir

What is your research eld at the moment?

To me the most fascinang research topic in photo-grammetry and remote sensing today is image under-standing. Inspired by work in areas such as arcial in-telligence and computer vision we have done a lot ofwork in this area in our group of about 25 researchersat Hannover University. We now come to a point wherewe have embed ourobject models into

a stascal frame-work, e. g. of Bayesian networks, and we carry out rststeps towards machine learning for automacally set-ng up the needed object models.Along with some success we have come to understandhow brilliant the human mind is. Trying to emulate alile part of human visual percepon while at the sameme developing something useful for the profession(and this is obviously not only the land surveyor imageunderstanding can be employed everywhere, where

images and video sequences can be found) means tocleverly combine the capabilies of the human and thecomputer. Along this road there are sll major challeng-es and major breakthroughs to be expected.

Why did you decide on this profession in the rst place

(tell us more about your rst steps)?

I probably had a bit of a head start, since I come from afamily of surveyors and engineers. Thus, I knew abouttheodolites and property boundaries from early ageon. My entry into photogrammetry way a lile more of

a random decision, I simply was aracted by the wayof working and the projects which were carried at TUMunich when I was a student there. So the message

probably is: join a group of interesng people showingyou challenges on the way ahead, and dont worry toomuch about future labour opportunies.Myself, I was then lucky enough to get oered a posionbetween university and industry, where I had two boss-es and two desks, and could learn about both worlds inparallel, while doing my PhD. Soon, Prof. Ebner, my PhD

...the easiest way to create a network of colleagues is to meet them

personally, and a scienc meeng is a very good way to do so

supervisor, startedto involve me in his

internaonal acvi-es and in this way opened up the ISPRS circles to me- something which has signicantly shaped my careerand helps me unl today.

What advice would you give to students and young

    professionals regarding a successful career?

Obviously, knowing your own eld by heart is essenal.Especially in research, acvely following and under-standing the ongoing developments on an internaon-al level including the somemes dicult mathema-cal formulaons is of utmost importance. Besides this

Along with some success we have come to

understand how brilliant the human mind is.

obvious requirement, youngstudents, sciensts and profes-sionals should start to get into

contact with colleagues interested in similar topics. Inorder to do so mastering the English language is a mustas it is the medium of internaonal communicaon.Studying abroad is a perfect way to learn the language,at the same me you will be exposed to a dierent cul-ture and experience that there is more than one way

to follow in life. Another aspect worth menoning isgeneral curiosity and the interest in areas next to yourown. In this way you can develop an understanding of

the bigger picture.Last not least, goodprogramming skillsare very helpful, asit is nearly impossi-ble to do researchbased on sowarewrien by others you simply dont

know the details of what is happening and thereforerun the risk of not being able to properly explain andinterpret your own results.

In your opinion how important is the parcipaon

of young people in internaonal events like summer

schools, congresses, workshops, etc.? What do you

think are the benets of such acvies to youth and

    to profession?

The answer really follows from what I menoned be-

fore: the easiest way to create a network of colleaguesis to meet them personally, and a scienc meeng is avery good way to do so. At thesame me you can discuss andsolve any open quesons with

the author aer having studied his paper, and you cometo understand that other groups have not yet solved allproblems in the world (somemes one gets this impres-sion when only reading papers). Finally, presenng yourown work at a scienc meeng is a perfect way to getfeedback and good ideas for the next steps; at the same

me you start to develop some addional so skills.

How do you see the future of spaal informaon sci-

ences (RS, photogrammetry, GIS, etc.)? What do you

think are the most challenging elds and research

    problems in the profession?

We live in visual world. Given that nearly everybody

now has a mobile phone equipped with a camera, andany images can end up in web repositories such as ickr.Together with the large and ever increasing amount ofearth observaon image data, there are plenty of op-portunies in our eld. Interview

Warsaw (Polish: Warszawa) is the capital of Poland and the 8th largest cityin the European Union with nearly 2 million of populaon. It is one of the fastestgrowing cies in Europe; the investment boom is visible everywhere you look.

Warsaw is situated almost in the heart of Poland on the Vistula River roughly 370kilometres (230 mi) from both the Balc Sea coast and the Carpathian Mountains. The river divides the city into two parts disnct in character. The more up-marketwestern bank of the Vistula is where the majority of Warsaws businesses, banks, theatres and cinemas can be found. The poorer eastern side, known as Praga, isslowly loosing its neglected appearance with a growing number of modern shop-ping centres, oce buildings and blocks of ats.Warsaws mixture of architectural styles reects the turbulent history of the cityand country. The present character of the city is determined by three importantfactors: World War II, when the city was completely destroyed, over 40 years of

communist rule and the present years of transformaon with its in-ow of foreigncapital and investment. The citys current urban landscape is one of modern andcontemporary architecture.

The best way to learn about a city is sightseeing on foot. Hence, it is recommendedtaking a walk in the Old Town and its surroundings the area with the biggestamount of monuments, museums and galleries. In order to reach other quarters

it is advisable to use public transport. There is also a growing net of bicycle laneswhich lead outside the town - to the Kampinos Primeval Forest or Powsin.Warsaw bar, clubbing and music scene is unmatched in the country, and its yearlycalendar is lled with theatre producons, operas and art-house lm premieres. Ifculture is your thing, then Warsaw is your place. Also culinary experiences are rich:When you are in Poland try dumplings, porcini mushroom soup, or urek (soupmade from fermented rye our). Nowadays, you can go on a culinary expedionaround Poland, without leaving Warsaw. Many restaurants oer Polish regionalcuisine, including the one specic to the capital city. Also there are milk bars a phenomenon characterisc of this country. Vegetarians will nd something forthemselves without diculty. Where do inhabitants of Warsaw eat? Mostly in Viet-

ture is a formidable challenge as well, as is the task tokeep all the databases up to date and consistent acrossdierent levels of detail and across internaonal bound-aries. From the applicaon point of view, environmentalmonitoring, forestry and agriculture, and security are

growing and excing new markets.Of course, there are other communies interested inimage exploitaon, geospaal data management, vi-sualisaon and distribuon. However, our backgroundin data handling enables us to play a central role in allthese fascinang developments. Thus, I believe that ourfuture is bright; we simply need to see, understand andgrasp the opportunies ahead of us.

These meengs are not only a good chance toexchange ideas from the geomacs eld but also a uniqueopportunity to get to know other countries culture, be-cause every year these meengs take place in a dierentcountry. This year the meeng was held from 4 th to 19th ofApril 2009 at the ETH University in Zurich, Switzerland. Themeeng was very well organized by the students commieefrom ETH University with several eecve workshops, dier-ent excursions, a surprise lake trip, poster and oral presen-taons. Around 150 students aended the meeng mainlyfrom European countries, not only geng knowledge fromthe workshop and presentaons but also having social ac-vies such as a barbeque, dinner, excursions and pares.

In order to adverse and inform our network two boardmembers of the ISPRS Student Consorum (SC) also at-tended the meeng. IGSM local organizaon team let usdistribute the SC leaet. Hence all parcipants were madeaware of the ISPRS SC. Also, we had a poster presentaonduring the Poster Session in which parcipants could re-cieve more informaon and had opportunies to ask theirquesons. Within two hours several students were inter-ested in our ISPRS SC poster. Also, beside the poster pre-sentaon we presented two dierent oral presentaons,

rst of all giving general informaon aboutthe ISPRS organizaon the other giving moredetailed informaon about the Student Con-sorum just before the IGSO General Assem-bly. We would like to extend thanks for all the

    ESA FOR STUDENTS

    6

GlobCover: When a Classical EO Applicaon Becomes a Serviceby Vasileios Kalogirou (RSAC c/o ESA)

Its been more than 3 years from the day that I came across an interesng arcle, while reading the Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry Society (RSPSoc) Newsleerof January 2006. An arcle wrien by Dr. Robin Vaughan, which is actually basedon a keynote talk that Dr. Vaughan gave in 2004 in Aberdeen during the AnnualConference of the RSPSoc (UK Remote Sensing Society then). His brilliant lectureinvesgated the queson: Remote Sensing - A success or a disappoinng failure?(R. Vaughan, Remote sensing - a success or a disappoinng failure? In: A. Cracknell,Editor, Proceedings of RSPSoc2004)The fairly logical argument of the arcle was based on the fact that aer so manyyears of remote sensing research we sll cannot do what was promised and thatsll remote sensing is facing its maturity stage towards the provision of operaonalservices. In a few words, there are a bunch of interesng and impressive applicaonsthat use remote sensing techniques, but how do you turn those into services?

The introducon above is quite relevant to what the GlobCover project is. Itis an ESAs iniave in partnership with JRC, FAO, EEA, UNEP, GOFC - GOLD andIGBP 1. Some people might think that it is simply a global land cover map whichhave been created using MERIS Full Resoluon data. At the moment, it is regardedas the most precise (300m spaal resoluon) global land cover map, whose legendis compable with the UN Land Cover Classicaon System. Being part of the ESAsData User Element programme, GlobCover is a demonstraon project whose out-put is more than a map; it is a system. A system that implements a semi-automacprocessing chain for a global land cover service. Under this perspecve, it is an im-portant step not only for ESA and its partners but also for the almost 7200 sciensts, ocers, students, conservaonists and others who freely downloaded it and usedit.Land cover mapping is a classical applicaon of Earth Observaon for many years. It is also very important informaon which serves as an input to a large variety ofother applicaons and studies. GlobCover system represents a great step forwardin our capacity to automacally produce new global land cover products with nerresoluon (global scale) and a more detailed themac content than ever achievedin the past. The GlobCover map is freely available to the public with the extendedvalidaon report, through ESAs Ionia server 2.Conveying all the above with Dr. Vaughans arcle, it seems that remote sensing isslowly moving forward to shape promises into public -and not only scienc- ser-

vices. GlobCover is an example of a demonstraon project, which can become easilyoperaonal. As our technical capabilies connue to grow, the need for operaonal services will

become more crical and as research provides us with more soluons and improve-ments, the markets interest will become stronger. Aer all, I do not know if EarthObservaon will be able to save the world, but I certainly know that it has alreadychanged the way we think about our world.

La Selvas Geographic Informaon System laboratory was established in 1991 withthe principal mission of providing data and geographic informaon for supporngthe learning and researching process of the Organizaon of Tropical Studies (OTS)hp://www.ots.ac.cr/ and their users.Since then, several surveys, geographical coverage and spaal research are under-way, supported by a 50 x 100 m grid system established in the forest as well as datafrom cung edge sensors, like aerial photography, satellite images and many air-borne opcal (mulspectral, hyperspectral) and acve sensors (RADAR, LiDAR).The GIS Lab has the equipment needed to carry out a high performance geospaal

processing and data analysis of high qual-ity, which allow us to receive many inter-disciplinary researchers interested on the

tropical forest knowledge. One of the most relevant projects cur-rently developed are techniques for thestudy of tree regeneraon and mortalityto know about the spaal paerns andecological processes of the forest dynam-

30 years ago geoinformaon researchers didnt have many opportunies to pres-ent their research works in Asia. In 1980, researchers from Asia parcipated in

ERIM Symposium in San Jose, Costa Rica; and their gathering made a decisionto hold this type of symposium with Asian styles in one of Asian cies. However, they faced many challenges in organizing the ACRS conference; but their dreamwas realize in Thailand at the rst ACRS conference in Asia in 1980, the same yearof the assembly in Costa Rica. The conference is held annually in one Asian city. Inthe beginning of 21st century, the parcipaon of students is increasing and stu-dent sessions iniated. Everyone can parcipate by subming research papers;even though, the conference is hold in one of AARS member countries.Over 30 years, the locaon of the ACRS conference has spread widely within Asia. The gure showed the locaon of ACRS venue cies and those are favorably dis-tributed in the Asia region. This year, ACRS 2009, will be held on Beijing, the capi-tal of China with the theme of Asia Onward Space Age. All useful informaon forthe conference can be found in the ACRS2009 website (hp://www.cncrs.org/).The rst day (18 Oct 2009) of the conference will be occupied by student ses-sions.
