The Building Services team led by Group Leader Sharron Hollice covers a wide area of campus from Bartow Arena to Hill Student Center. The team of 31 Environmental Services Specialists work hard to ensure their buildings are taken care of so that students, faculty and staff can do their jobs.

“I really enjoy working for a university that is making history every day in sports, medicine, and education,” said Kevin Ricks, Environmental Services Specialist in Heritage Hall and Bartow Arena.

Ricks said that he believes Building Services is the backbone of the university, and it’s important to him to see that the faculty and students are happy.

Many members of the team cite working with their customers as the best part of their jobs. Rosa Evans, Environmental Services Specialist in Heritage Hall, said the students and faculty are highlights in her day.

“UAB is a great place to work,” Evans said. Vester Vason, Environmental Services Specialist, said the best

part of her day is getting to work with her peers. She’s been at UAB for one year and she enjoys that her job enables her to work at her own pace.

The group ranges in experience at UAB from less than 6 months to more than 35 years, and that knowledge, work ethic and commitment is what continues to make UAB great.

If you have a group you would like to see featured in a Group Spotlight, please let us know! Contact Natalie Merrill, Facilities Communications Manager, at [email protected] or by calling 934-4825. We are always looking for new ways to showcase our groups in the Facilities Division!

Why is UAB using 2-factor authentication? Two-factor authentication is one of the most valuable tools to

lower the risk of theft of your credentials and information. Two-factor authentication refers to a factor you know — your password — and a factor you have — your mobile device.

If a scammer steals those credentials, whether through a successful phishing attack or a password-reuse issue, they can impersonate you and access any accounts to which you have access. That can open the door to serious issues, such as changing your direct deposit settings to someone else’s bank account or corrupting research data. Using 2-factor raises the bar required to successfully pull off such attacks.

How do I sign up for Duo? Head to uab.edu/2factor to learn more about the Duo Security

tool and sign up for an account. Once you sign up for Duo, you can’t leave the system — but UAB IT won’t make you change your password again unless your account is compromised.

The 2-factor site will walk you through what 2-factor authentication is, why we are using it and how to use it for every device. The quick-start guide will take you step-by-step through enrolling your devices.

to employees, studentsBlazer Kitchen, an on-campus food bank serving University

of Alabama at Birmingham employees and students, opened in early 2017 and has since served more than 29,000 meals.

Sponsored by the UAB Benevolent Fund and located in UAB Medical Towers, Suite 100, the kitchen offers fresh and nonperishable foods to those on campus faced with food insecurity. Blazer Kitchen is open Mondays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and Thursdays from 3 p.m.-6 p.m.

Donations are accepted and encouraged, and drives for food and household items have been held throughout the year by student groups and on student move-out days.

Blazer Kitchen partners with the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama to access low-cost food such as USDA food, food donated through grocery stores and food available only to food banks.

All UAB employees and students must present a UAB ONE Card or VIVA Health Employee Badge. Anyone planning to visit the pantry can download eligibility forms in English or Spanish. These forms are for food available through USDA; other food will be available for employees and/or students who are food insecure but do not meet USDA requirements. Frequency of participation in the Blazer Kitchen is identified on a monthly basis, based on need and food availability. Frequency guidelines can change at the discretion of the staff.

Student groups such as the UAB chapter of Universities Fighting World Hunger are working to assist the UAB Benevolent Fund with the kitchen operations. Individuals and employee groups who would like to volunteer to unpack and sort food can email [email protected].

Blazer Kitchen is offered in collaboration with the Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research, The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, UAB Office of the Vice President for Financial Affairs and Administration, UAB Medicine, and UAB Student Advocacy, Rights and Conduct.

More information about the program can be found at u a b . e d u / b e n f u n d / blazer-kitchen. Questions can be sent to [email protected].
