Message from Mrs Barr Dear Parents

The year 2 children thoroughly enjoyed supporting the Royal British Legion by volunteering to sell Poppies at the gate all last week. The Woodpecker class, in assembly on Tuesday, then reminded us as to why we wear a Poppy, and showed us how the money raised by the charity was used. Thank you, as always, for your support.

With this wet weather, Mike and Les do a great job of keeping the grounds safe by clearing leaves and sweeping excess water away; however, please can I remind you, and the children, to be careful on the playgrounds to avoid slipping. With this in mind, and the dark nights now upon us, we will be taking part in Road Safety Week next week. I am sure the Junior Travel Ambassadors will be on hand to offer advice on how to stay safe and be seen on the streets.

Best wishes

NEWS FROM MUSIC DEPARTMENT It was lovely to meet and hear from so many parents these past two weeks. I am really pleased that we have even more children interested in taking up instrument lessons here at Chepstow. It’s also great to hear that some children have already checked out FROG to practise their songs for the winter concerts, or shared their

past work with family.

Countdown to the Christmas shows now, from Y1&2, to 3&4, not to mention reception’s Nativity.

NEWS FROM SPORTS DEPARTMENT Y2 Football Tournament at Burton Court – 8/11/19

The Y2s had their first official competitive fixture this week in the form of a small tournament against three other teams. It’s fair to say the boys were very excited and were raring to go. The tournament was split into

two groups, with everyone playing everyone in each group, followed by a final and a 3rd/4th play-off. All our boys gave it their all and really got stuck in. Both teams started well and continued to dominate their matches. Players such as Alex and Teo stood out in each of their teams, but everyone played brilliantly and it was great to see them all enjoying themselves so much. Our ‘A’ team came away runners up, while our ‘B’ team came away winning their side of the tournament. Both are fantastic results and we were very proud of everyone who took part. Well done boys!

Y3 Football V Finton House – 12/11/19

The Y3 ‘A’s had a tough match today against a strong Finton House team at Linford Christie. We started strongly and started to play with conviction early on in the game, putting Finton House under pressure in their defensive half. Alex and Max worked hard to close down the ball, showing excellent work rate, particularly in the second half. Dom again was consistently reliable in defence, with the help of Kush who

continues to position himself effectively on the field. James is also showing improvement in goal, this time with some gloves which made him more confident with using his hands. Unfortunately Finton House had a particularly strong defence and made it difficult for us to get past. Unfortunately they scored two past us, making the final score 2-0 to Finton House. A strong effort nevertheless from the boys. Well done.

Man of the match - James

Y3 Netball V Finton House – 12/11/19

The Y3 Netballers hosted a very strong Finton House team at Linford Christie. In difficult conditions, the ‘A’ team match began with both teams attacking and defending extremely well and the enticing game was moving from end to end. Finton House began to get on top just before half time and took a 1-0 lead into the break. Chepstow defended extremely well in the second half, with Ella and Clara marking their players well. Chepstow couldn’t quite find their attacking spark and the game ended 3-0 to Finton House. The ‘B’ team

match was played at a frantic pace, with Chepstow demonstrated much improved passing and moving skills. Finton House were again quite strong and took an early lead. Lea, Stella and Sienna combined well in the centre third but we couldn’t quite work the ball consistently into the ‘D’. A positive afternoon and provides us

with plenty to work on in our Friday lessons.

‘A’ team player of the match – Zoe

‘B’ team player of the match- Lea

Yr5 Netball V Latymer

On Thursday 7th November our year 5’s had two tough matches against Latymer. The children were split into a pink and blue team and both teams

were against competitive Latymer sides.

The blue team got off to a great start and Chepstow took an early lead, it

was great to see them all passing consistently well and working so hard together. Siddiqa showed excellent consistency with her shooting skills providing many of our goals. Max and Maeve were also sturdy in defence throwing in some great interceptions. Overall we played well in a closely fought an entertaining game with

the final score ending 8-7 to Chepstow. Well done!

NEWS FROM FRENCH DEPARTMENT This week, Year 3 to Year 7 had fun posing for their French exercise book front cover to make their plain yellow book a bit more personal.

More importantly, on Monday 18th November, Year 5 will be in for a treat as they are going to the French

Institute “L’Institut Français” in South Kensington to see a French film called “Rémi sans famille” as part of the South Ken Kids Festival. It will be in French with English subtitles and will provide a great opportunity to listen to the French language and discover beautiful parts of France.

Then on Wednesday 20th November, Year 3 are visiting “La Petite Ecole Française”, a local French primary school. They will take part in activities and games in the morning with some native French children and will get the chance to practise their French words.

LITTLE CHEPSTOW NEWS Autumn has continued to feature strongly at Little Chepstow this week. The younger children have been looking at leaf shapes and colours, making all things ‘leafy’. This has included leaf sponge prints, stunning autumn wreathes and even delicious leaf shaped shortbread cookies.

The Field Mice are learning all about ‘Animals in the Forest’ and British Wild Life. Some sweet little salt dough hedgehogs are busy drying in nursery and they also painted some amazingly accurate forest animals.

In addition to all this activity, we have been out collecting leaves etc. in the playground and making the most of some fantastic cardboard boxes that came with a recent order. Boxes…the most versatile item one can find

RECEPTION NEWS Reception have been busy finding out all about ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar.’ We can’t believe how greedy he was! Learning about the life cycle of a butterfly was so much fun. We made our own life cycles and labelled them too! In phonics we loved getting super messy with cornflour and tracing lots of patterns too. Our maths lessons this week were so much fun! We learnt all about subtraction and counted so carefully to find the total once we had taken objects away. Great work this week Reception!

YEAR 1 NEWS This week Year 1 has read and acted out Re Riding Hood in our literacy lessons. We are learning all about the characters and setting as well as how to structure a story-all great fun! In maths we have started to add and takeaway so we are practicing with anything we can find! We are heading off on our trip next week to the London Transport Museum so we have been learning all about the old and new modes of transport. There is a lot to learn and we are so excited to be able to actually go and see some old buses, vans and cars next week. We shall let you know how it all went. This week we have also been learning all about Diwali and Siddh’s mother in the Puffin class came to teach us all about it. We also managed to get some delicious treats!

YEAR 2 NEWS This week the Woodpeckers had their remembrance assembly. The assembly focused on the importance to remember the soldiers, past and present, and the reason why we wear poppies. The children sang an upbeat song called ‘Thank You’, where they thanked all the soldiers for their hard work. The Woodpeckers also

explained the important work that the charity, The Royal British Legion, do. Remember to continue to buy your poppies to support the amazing work that this charity does. The children did so well – well done Woodpeckers!

It is safe to say after all this hard work, year 2 are definitely ready for a relaxing half term!

YEAR 3 NEWS This week the children have had their second lesson of computing coding and are slowly becoming experts in the field! During the lesson, they programmed their Lego robot to move across the floor and even raced their peers! Children continue to challenge themselves in swimming and it in fantastic to see them learning new skills, swimming at a faster speed and gaining more confidence. Story writing has been taking place in literacy this week as the children delve deeper in to the Aboriginal culture. After hearing a famous aboriginal story, year 3 mapped out the story before writing it in their own words. Next week we look forward to hearing their own stories!

YEAR 4 NEWS In maths we have been looking at shapes and angles since half term. Learning new vocabulary such as polygon, quadrilateral and obtuse angle. We are now experts in all things shape. Year 4 have also been finding out about plants from around the world and different biomes in our geography topic. There are some wild and wacky plants out there including one that looks like Darth Vader, not even joking.

YEAR 6 NEWS IYear 6 had a great time debating during UK Parliament Week. Children were split into groups of three and chose to be either for or against the motion. The motions we discussed were:

• Zoos have no place in today’s society

• All schools should be co-ed

• Too much public money is spent on space exploration.

The children learnt how sometimes you need to be able to form an argument despite not necessarily agreeing with the motion.

ECO COMMITTEE NEWS

Our green flag has arrived and we are all feeling very proud of our achievement! Following on from the

environmental review that we conducted last half term, we are working on the EcoSchools’ topics ‘transport’ and ‘energy’.

Our JTAs are running a ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ competition as part of Road Safety Week next week. We want children to design a coat that will keep you warm and safe on the roads. Remember, it needs to have lots of bright colours to make it visible to drivers! You could label your drawing with the materials you would use and

why, or could even make your entry a collage. The deadline for these posters is Friday 22nd. All entries to be given to class teachers with your name and class on the reverse.

The eco committee will also be encouraging the whole school to take part in Switch off Fortnight beginning next week. We want to ensure we are not wasting energy by remembering to turn off lights when leaving a room and keeping the doors and windows shut to preserve heat. It would be fantastic to hear about children

mirroring this good practice at home too! Please tweet us @chs_eco.

Now that it is winter, it might be dark when you are walking to and from school. It is important to wear clothes that are bold and bright, both morning and night, so that drivers can see you!

We want you do design a coat to keep you safe and warm when you’re walking near roads. You can label your drawing or even stick things on to create a collage. Return your coat designs to your teacher by Friday 22nd November.
