About UQMSA

The UQ Malaysian Students Association (UQMSA) is an official and non-profitablestudent body primarily for Malaysian students, based in the UQ St Lucia campus.Individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds including students from otheruniversities, working adults and non-Malaysians are warmly welcomed to be part of ourbig family throughout the year.

UQMSA is proud to host the largest collection of Malaysians in Queensland as well as a

number of non-Malaysians from various countries, with its membership base growingacross the years.

Through the promotion of Malaysian culture via fun-filled social and educationalactivities, UQMSA has been striving to offer members a vibrant campus-culture andcommunity experience, encapsulating UQMSAs motto of being a home-away-from-home. Annual or bi-annual social events like Welcoming BBQ, Mamak Night andOutdoor Excursion act as a plat-form to unite our fellow Malaysians together, alongsideoffering our members opportunities to fix their cravings for Malaysian delicacies. We

also have intellectual programs which pro-vide our members with information on career,internship and volunteering opportunities.

All in all, we aim to offer a myriad of experiences to our members throughout their stayin Brisbane, and to bring a sense ofhomeliness to our members.

Funlympics was our first ever casual sportingcompetition. Our members played Dodgeball and

UQMSA is "infamous" for being one of the busiest societies around,but at the same time UQMSA has a great reputation and can reallyspice up your life if you really put your commitment into it. Well I saidit all, UQMSA means a lot to me. Not really answering the questioneh? Cause it is not easy to put it in words heh, but I will try my best.

UQMSA strives its best to uphold its core: "Bringing a Piece of Hometo You", be it Malaysian food (typical us), culture or language,UQMSA always has its unique way to remind you of home. Yes, Iknow that people always say that we should interact more with thelocals especially when studying overseas, but that does not mean youhave to give up on your roots. Trust me, that strong sense ofbelonging cannot be felt elsewhere here. Surrounded with the peoplethat speak with the same accent and enjoy the same food, you might

even be more homesick (opps), but that is OK since UQMSA isalways there for you! One of UQMSA biggest charms (not I say oneah, even foreigners mentioned many many times) it its tight bondbetween its members. Regardless if you are a newcomer or an ol'sport (or even a non-Malaysian), you will find a way to fit in becauseeveryone will welcome you gladly. Why? Cause it's a UQMSA thing. ;)So again, what is UQMSA to me? One word: Family :)

To summarise, an experience of a lifetime. :) Joining UQMSA was never about the fame and glory (morelike pain and gory), but to uphold the spirit of service above self. Undeniably, being part of UQMSA wasnot easy at all. I can still recall those sleepless nights, skipped classes (oops), arguments andfrustrations. However, it was all worth it in the end. You get to build countless connections, earn priceless

experiences and forge strong friendships. The satisfaction cannot be described but easily experienced.

UQMSA has a another strange charm, everyone involved in UQMSA will "magically" give their best. Thework culture in UQMSA is very encouraging and I find myself stepping out of my comfort zone every nowand then. The bond within UQMSA is very strong, the sense of belonging brings everyone together and Isincerely appreciate this big family. Looking back at Malaysia while being in UQMSA, I realise that theideal kind of Malaysian spirit, Malaysian Dream, Malaysian-ness or...you know what I mean ;), is beinglived here. I would really like to bring back what I experienced in UQMSA back to Malaysia, the muhhibah

you experience here is priceless. Enough of being cheesy, just join UQMSA to find out yourself! :D
