May is the traditional month for the RSBITE Annual Student Presentation. This year,

RSBITE continued the legacy of hosting the meeting at Bombay Restaurant in the City

of Ontario. The audience was mixed with alumni, students, professors, and industry

professional. The meeting started with welcoming remarks and announcements from

President Gianfranco Laurie, who introduced the student presenters and provided an

opportunity for the secretary-treasurer candidates to introduce themselves.

This year, RSBITE had the pleasure of receiving the participation from Cal Baptist

University, Cal Poly Pomona, and UCLA. All three schools competed by giving

presentations on either research studies or design projects which they completed

throughout the academic year.

The first presentation was given by the students from UCLA on a research study of HOT Lanes. The students studied the I-

110 Metro Express Lanes by using Origin-Destination Model to evaluate the travel times, distance, and cost. They identified

four points: facilitate data collection, weave distance verification, creation of Origin-Destination pairs, and final results. They

also provided recommendations to improve express lane operations.

The second presentation was given by a student from Cal Baptist University on the research study of Bioasphalt. The student

provided background on traditional pavement materials and bioasphalt materials. The research discussed the processing of

bioasphalt and compared bioasphalt to regular asphalt. In addition, the research showed the availability of the resource

needed for producing bioasphalt, discussed benefits/challenges of the bioasphalt, and how it is being used worldwide on

different projects.

The third presentation was given by students from Cal Poly Pomona on Operational Analysis of an Existing Interchange in

City of Menifee. It was a design project in which they studied the background, challenges of the project, evaluated different

alternatives for the interchange, and provided their best recommendations.

All three schools gave excellent presentations in a very professional manner and the judges were very impressed. After

much deliberation the judges awarded 1st place to Nadia Mugisha from Cal Baptist University, 2nd place to the students of

UCLA, and 3rd place awarded to students of Cal Poly Pomona. Each school received a cash price for their efforts courtesy of

RSBITE. Please join us as we congratulate these schools on their winnings for their thought-provoking presentations. We

hope to see them all compete again next year!

Congratulations to Nadia Mugisha for winning first place

among our three exceptional student presentations last

week! Nadia examined some ways in which we

as #transportationengineers can reduce our #carbonfootprint

One potential way to do that is to research alternatives to

carbon-intensive #constructionmaterialssuch as bituminous

asphalt. The #calbaptist student explained the challenges

and advantages of developing #bioasphalt in California made

from non-petroleum based #renewablesources.

The world of transportation is transforming before our eyes. Big advances in technology, gen-erational demographic shifts, and globalization are among the many forces that will transform our profession. This type of change can either be a threat, or it can present great opportuni-ties. To seize the opportunities, ITE must take a leadership role to ensure that our members

have the right information, the right connections, and the right opportunities to succeed.

Develop a strong ITE brand. ITE needs to clearly define its space among transportation organizations and then provide decisive leadership where it can be most effective.

Leverage technology and social media. ITE must modernize its approach to service delivery and commu-nication by better utilizing technology, fully embracing online and cloud-based platforms, social media, and mobile technology.

Embrace & encourage diversity. In our changing profession, ITE must position itself as the organization of choice for professionals of all diverse origins and backgrounds.

Define ITE’s global role. A global economy more strongly dominated by Asia and other emerging econo-mies is impacting the transportation industry, even for those that never work outside North America. ITE needs to identify how it can best engage and support transportation professionals globally.

Leadership. In our own organizations, in our profession, and in society, ITE members need to be the technical experts and the advocates leading the conversations and delivering the solutions to the transpor-tation challenges of the 21st century.

ITE is the organization that I have devoted my career to serving for the last 20 years. I have served ITE as an elected leader at the chapter, section, district, and international levels, and I have served on many committees, task forces, and technical councils. I love ITE for what it has done for me professionally and for the many personal relationships I value so much. ITE is at a crossroads and change is needed for ITE to be successful into the future. With your help and collaboration, I look forward to applying my knowledge of ITE, along with my education and experience as a business leader, to effectively lead our Institute through this transform-ative time.
