CEO MESSAGE

I am always a huge believer of the above statement. With this in mind, we started 2015 with the GreenTech Awards (GTA), which saw our organising team working tirelessly to stage the grand black-tie event. The event was an enormous success and received much applause from all the guests. Congratulations to the organising team, comprising Tengku Loreta who was the organising chairman, Woon, Devika, Eziana, Budiotomo, Nursyahida and the team who worked with a tight deadline to make the GreenTech Awards Gala Dinner a highly celebrated event.

The GTA paid tribute to Malaysia’s Top 30 Green Catalysts who have had significant environmental, economic and social impact in expanding the country’s green technology sector. Prominent personalities in the field such as Gurmit Singh, Chairman of the Centre for Environment, Technology and Development Malaysia (CETDEM), Ruth Yeoh, Executive Director of YTL Corporation, Tan Sri Datuk Eddy Chen, Managing Director of MKH Berhad and Puan Sri To’ Puan Datuk Shariffa Binti Syed Akil, President of Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia (PEKA) graced the event. Through honouring past and present successes, the GTA aims to be a source of inspiration for future generations. The success of GTA now has to inspire us to venture boldly into delivering similar successes in all our flagships.

We are also pleased to be partnering with Malaysian Exhibition Services Sdn. Bhd. (MES) to organise the upcoming IGEM 2015 which is scheduled to be held from 9th -12th September. This marks the 6th edition and it is worth noting how IGEM has grown with last year recording a total participation of 357 exhibitors from across 20 countries showcasing their

latest green technology products and services at 616 booths and attracting over 49,000 visitors from around the world.

IGEM 2015 was officially launched on 11th March by the Deputy Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Dato’ Seri DiRaja Mahdzir bin Khalid with the theme “Powering the Green Economy”. This year’s theme reflects the constant need to aggressively promote and empower the green economy in Malaysia and across ASEAN. This year, we are targeting 400 exhibitors and 50,000 visitors from across the globe. Working hard collectively with MES, we have to ensure that this year’s IGEM will be an even greater success.

Taking a quick glimpse back into 2014, I am happy to share with all of you that our annual performance index for the company rose from 47% to 82%. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate my entire team at GreenTech Malaysia for achieving these amazing numbers. That said, we should not be complacent with our achievement; we must continue to ride on the momentum and strive towards achieving 100% in 2015.

On top of that, last year we finalised work on the Electric Mobility Blueprint (EMB) and this year we are targeting its publication. The EMB will provide a comprehensive framework for the development of the electric vehicle (EV) sector and supporting ecosystem in Malaysia. The EMB aims to fast-track Malaysia’s transformation into a global electric mobility marketplace and propel Malaysia forward in both sustainable practices as well as economic development. These will be achieved by encouraging public engagement and private ownership of EVs through financial incentives, implementing regulatory

support to encourage EV usage and by creating a holistic EV ecosystem and economy. As we speak, the blueprint is currently being circulated for its final review and I am sure all of you are as excited as I am to share our many months of effort with the rest of the world.

As we step into 2015, we must be reminded of our collective objective – driving the nation’s green agenda. Let us ensure that our actions speak louder than our words and in turn, let us continue to inspire action in others.

The 29th January 2015 was a memorable day for all of us at GreenTech Malaysia. After weeks of hard work, planning and organising, we finally rolled out the red carpet at the Majestic Hotel in Kuala Lumpur to welcome guests and friends from around the country to celebrate and honour Malaysia’s Top 30 Green Catalysts for 2014, comprising individuals and organisations who have had significant environmental, economic and social impact in expanding the country’s sustainability sector.

We were indeed very honoured to have His Highness Crown Prince of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj grace our awards ceremony, joining the 620 notable sustainability leaders from across various sectors including the Energy, Building, Transport, Water and Waste Management.

This year, the GreenTech Awards comprised two categories, Personalities and Corporations, acknowledging the many efforts put in by both individuals and organisations who are committed to ensuring Malaysia’s long-term ecological sustainability and growing the green

technology sector in order to achieve the nation’s green agenda.

While honouring past achievements, the GreenTech Awards also aim to inspire the next generation to emulate these role models and aspire to become future green catalysts. As mentioned by Ir. Ahmad Hadri, Chief Executive Officer of GreenTech

Malaysia, “For while they are the youth of today, they will be the leaders of tomorrow taking over the baton from us to continue to champion our national green agenda.”

slick movements, following which, a seven course dinner was served. The audience were then treated to soulful music by Poova who charmed the crowd with her acoustic jazz renditions of Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off, Alicia Key’s Empire State of Mind and also Poova’s very own, Hello, among others. The performances for the night also included an enchanting classical repertoire by renowned Datuk Ramli Ibrahim and the Sutra Dance Theatre, as well as a dazzling soprano

performance by Syafinaz Selamat. Between performances, Malaysia’s Top 30 Green Catalysts were invited on to the stage where they received their awards from His Highness Crown Prince of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj and GreenTech Malaysia’s Chairman, Y.Bhg. As the curtains drew on the gala event, guests were seen eagerly congratulating the award recipients, catching up with old friends and making new ones. The team at GreenTech Malaysia who made all this happen, were finally able to breathe a collective sigh of relief at accomplishing what must be considered one of the major highlights in the first quarter of 2015.

MTHPI ENDORSES EMB AND GTMP FRAMEWORKS

MTHPI’s Objective

Established in 2010, Majlis Teknologi Hijau Negara & Perubahan Iklim (MTHPI) formulates policies to facilitate the implementation of the National Green Technology Policy (NGTP). It also evaluates the effectiveness of the programmes and climate change initiatives being undertaken through the NGTP at the national level.

February 2015, the media reported on Prime Minister, Y.A.B. Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak‘s comments that climate change and global warming are not to be viewed lightly.

The Prime Minister said the number of green jobs created in Malaysia had increased by 38 per cent, from 61,280 in 2013 to 84,565 last year. The number of green jobs are expected to increase to 144,590 by 2020, growing on to 211,500 by 2030 should the national green agenda continue to be given priority.

In addition to this, substantial studies were also conducted to review successful EV adoption strategies that have been rolled out in countries such as Amsterdam, Kingdom of Netherlands; Los Angeles, United States of America and Norway. These countries were selected based on their status as leaders of electric mobility.

With the endorsement of the MHTPI, both the GTMP and the EMB will be further reviewed by relevant ministries prior to being presented to the Cabinet.

Over and above this, green businesses are expected to contribute RM22.4 billion to gross domestic products (GDP) by 2020, potentially rising to RM60 billion by 2030, with strong commitment to facilitate growth in the green sector.

GreenTech Malaysia’s Role

GreenTech Malaysia successfully supported the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, (KeTTHA) by developing and preparing the Green Technology Master Plan (GTMP) and the Electric Mobility Blueprint (EMB). During the MTHPI, KeTTHA tabled the GTMP while GreenTech Malaysia presented the EMB, both of which have been approved.

The first step to the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia 2015 (IGEM 2015) was taken recently with the official announcement on 11th March 2015.

Held for the sixth consecutive year, IGEM 2015 is organised by the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) in collaboration with GreenTech Malaysia and Malaysian Exhibition Services Sdn. Bhd.(MES). Themed “Powering the Green Economy”, IGEM 2015 will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 9th to 12th September this year.

Dato’ Seri DiRaja Mahdzir bin Khalid, Deputy Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, was on hand to make the official announcement, where guests including Government officials and leaders from the green technology industry as well as representatives from embassies and chambers of commerce, were briefed on the various sub-events lined up to engage industry players and stakeholders to address key issues of green economic policy, public goals and corporate best practices.

This year’s IGEM will also play host to two unique sub-events, the Green Financing Conference in collaboration with Islamic Banking and Finance Institute of Malaysia (IBFIM) on 9th

September and the E-Mobilia World (Eco Efficient Electric) in collaboration with Koelnmesse Ptd. Ltd. for two days from 10th September.

ASEAN pavilions from Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Japan alongside the Malaysian states pavilion are also set to be featured. Other sub-events will include MATRADE International Business Matching Session, Green Career Matchmaking, Exhibitor’s Reception and Green Insights.

Over the years, IGEM has grown from strength to strength, with last year’s event recording participation from 357 exhibitors taking up some 616 exhibition booths from across 20 countries and attracting over 49,000 visitors from around the world. These statistics clearly demonstrate the significant role IGEM continues to play as the region’s largest green technology platform.

MES FOR IGEM 2015 On 14th January, GreenTech Malaysia appointed MES as our strategic partner to co-organise IGEM 2015. With the partnership, we are confident that MES will be able to offer fresh ideas and new perspectives that will ensure IGEM 2015 exceeds its previous benchmarks.

Incorporated in 1980, MES, the largest exhibition organiser in Malaysia and a pioneer in this field, was selected based on its vast experience in organising successful and well-attended, business-generating international exhibitions. Some of MES’s highly acclaimed works include the ASCOPE 85 conference and exhibition for The Asean Council On Petroleum (ASCOPE) which was managed on behalf of PETRONAS, the UK Today exhibition for the British High Commission in September 1998 which was held in conjunction with Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Malaysia and the 2nd Malaysia Oil and Gas Services Exhibition and Conference (MOGSEC) in 2014.

With global environment concerns at an all-time high, we have arrived at a time where sustainability is no longer an option, it is an imperative.

This summarises the core objective of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between GreenTech Malaysia and Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) on 20th March.

Specifically, the MoU will see the implementation of the Low Carbon Cities Framework & Assessment (LCCF) at all 149 municipalities in Malaysia by 2020. This initiative looks to ramp-up efforts in encouraging sustainable practices across the country in line with the Government’s efforts to effectively reduce up to 40% emission intensity of GDP by 2020, from the base year of 2005.

Throughout the partnership, GreenTech Malaysia’s primary role will be to provide advice and assistance to its strategic partners and to monitor all national data pertinent to the carbon calculator.

On MIP’s part, the organisation will fast-track the implementation of the LCCF in local councils through the development of individual roadmaps, action plans and technical trainings.Currently, four municipalities, namely, Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya, Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya, Majlis Perbandaran Hang Tuah Jaya and the Iskandar Regional Development Authority are implementing the LCCF.

year to further enhance the LCCF initiative. The seven councils include Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh, Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan, Majlis Perbandaran Kota Bahru, Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu and Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara.

GreenTech Malaysia is excited to be partnering with MIP on this noteworthy agenda to create a sustainable environment for our future generations.

IQ, or Intelligence Quotient, as defined by Oxford Dictionaries is a number representing a person’s reasoning ability (measured using problem-solving tests) as compared to the statistical norm.

IQ tests in today’s world are synonymous with Mensa, a leading testing body, which literally means “table” in Latin, a round-table society, where race, colour, creed, nationality, age, politics, educational or social background are irrelevant; it is a society for bright people, the only qualification for membership is a high IQ.

recently some 62 staff of GreenTech Malaysia underwent a Mensa test, and we could not be any prouder when the test results came back. Out of 62 candidates, eleven managed to score 148 and above, or above the 98th

percentile, which is the qualifying mark to join Mensa. This works out to be 17.7% of the GreenTech team, which is truly impressive.

Even more noteworthy is that six candidates in the group scored 160 and above, this subgroup has exhibited very high analytical and logical skills, and GreenTech is proud that these bright individuals are in our midst and in positions where their skills are fully tapped and utilised.

In as much importance that IQ has been highlighted all along let us also not forget its close sibling, EQ, or Emotional Quotient which is equally salient, in today’s society. Emotional intelligence is the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions, and handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically (Oxford Dictionaries).

EQ enables us to use feelings to boost and complement our IQ. As individuals, our success depends on our ability to read other people’s signals and react appropriately to them. This applies

even more so in an organisation such as GreenTech Malaysia where a large portion of our task involves collaborating with various stakeholders, fielding opinions and aligning ideas to push the nation’s green agenda.

On the road, the Renault Zoe is well-mannered and, like most electric cars, provides a comparatively soothing driving experience. The Zoe operates smoothly and quietly, whether under acceleration, while coasting or in regenerative braking mode.

Hahaha... As mentioned previously, I don’t have much to say about my proudest contribution per se, but as always, I do my work according to the instructions given by my superior. If he is happy, I am much happier.

TELL uS ABouT YouR ExPERIENCE DRIVING AN EV FoR A MoNTH.Personally, I would say it is cool and stylo. It is easier to drive compared to my usual car because I use a manual one. But I still love my own car... Hehehe... Besides that, the EV is so quiet. Other advantages include saving the environment by omitting zero CO2 and also savings in terms of petrol costs. My family was also very interested to try the EV, especially my youngest brother. A huge thank you to the management who has graciously allowed me to use it for a month. It was indeed a good experience and exposure for me.

READING CORNERGoodyear has found a new way to power electric cars: The tyres!

Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company has unveiled a concept product, called BhO3, that “offers the possibility of charging the batteries of electric cars by transforming the heat generated by the rolling tyre into electrical energy.”

Goodyear said the specially made tyres can generate electricity during normal driving conditions.

The technology aims to address an obstacle faced by electric car companies like Tesla: the limited range of their vehicles before needing a recharge.

Goodyear made the announcement at the 85th Geneva International Motor Show.

The company also announced a new tyre called “triple tube,” which automatically adjusts its own air pressure based on road conditions.

A fully transparent solar cell that could make every window and screen a power source!

Researchers at Michigan State University have created a fully transparent solar concentrator, which could turn any window or sheet of glass (like your smartphone’s screen) into a photovoltaic solar cell. Unlike other “transparent” solar cells that we’ve reported on in the past, this one really is transparent, as you can see in the photos throughout this story. According to Richard Lunt, who led the research, the team is confident that the transparent solar panels can be efficiently deployed in a wide range of settings, from “tall buildings with lots of windows or any kind of mobile device that demands high aesthetic quality like a phone or e-reader.”

The researchers are confident that the technology can be scaled all the way from large industrial and commercial applications, down to consumer devices, while remaining “affordable.” So far, one of the larger barriers to large-scale adoption of

solar power is the intrusive and ugly nature of solar panels — obviously, if we can produce large amounts of solar power from sheets of glass and plastic that look like normal sheets of glass and plastic, then that would be big!

Range anxiety is the bane of the electric car, it’s the scenario where the car’s electric power source, the battery, is running dangerously low.

So, how does it work?Two key software updates to the Model S sedan are currently in beta testing with Tesla owners.

The first is a “range assurance” application which communicates with Tesla’s Supercharger network and warns you if you’re in danger of running out of range, then finds the closest Supercharger.

The second is a trip planner, which will integrate the Supercharger network with the network of Model S cars on the road and their navigation systems.

Basically, a Model S will know where it is, where the closest Supercharger is at all times, and how much battery charge it has remaining, as well as how far it has to go to a given destination.
