VTR 2012, Galveston Island

28 October-1 November

Relax and take a deep breath! The 2012 VTR National Convention at Galveston Island went well--really well. Our planning committee, headed by Don Carter, did an outstanding job span-ning well over one year. All that detailed planning and the frequent meetings really paid off. A big thank you to our core volunteers (you all know who you are) who have once again come to the rescue and made the Nationals such a success and enjoyable as possible. Even the weather cooperated to make Galveston Island a particularly enjoyable venue.

We had a great turnout. The National is not just a few days at Galveston Island. A great deal of time was also spent by attendees getting ready for the event. Cars had to be restored, painted or partially painted and buffed, perhaps some body work or general tune up of me-chanicals. Our club volunteers and all attendees deserve credit for the quality of the show and the participation levels at all the events. If you were a first time attendee, perhaps you laid aside some of the initial fears and came away with new vigor and a determination to do even better next time.

I certainly hope you enjoyed the event

Mentioned in Despatches

Triumphest – Flagstaff, AZ 27-29 Sept

According to Central Okla-homa VTR—which dispatched more than a few members and cars to Flag-staff—this was one outstanding event. Hosted by Desert Centre Triumph Register o f A m e r i c a (Phoenix) and supported by Southern Califor-nia Triumph As-sociation (Los Angeles), Tri-umph Register of Southern Califor-nia (Los Ange-les), Triumph Sports Car Club

of San Diego and the Triumph Travelers Sports Car Club (San Francisco), the confab took place at Flagstaff’s famous Little America Hotel alongside I-40/old US 66.

The events included an a u t o c ro ss , f un k ha n a , “walking rally,” tech sessions, Route 66 tours and drives through the red rock country of Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon. The COVTR corre-spondent noted the 7000-foot altitude required “a little tuning of carburetors” and regular wear of the club’s new sweatshirts but all in all, everyone enjoyed themselves.

Triumph Travelers will host the combined VTR National/Triumphest 2013 , 2-6 October 2013 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Desert Centre will again host Triumphest in 2017.

Work In Progress

(from page 12)

Thanks to Bill Fisher, editor of Brit’s Bits of the Lawrence All British Car Club, we have these exclusive photos of the Chump-Car Series 1979 TR7 of Mark Canaday and the “North Topeka Orchestra.” No expense was spared for the bodywork (seriously...they went through NO expense, save for the yellow paint lovingly applied over the original red. Bill noted the multi-ple bullet holes helped lighten the vehicle for competition) and the car received a transplanted Mazda 1.6L engine.

The car managed 13 of 24 hours at August’s ChumpCar event at Iowa Speedway but it sounds like they had fun. For a copy of the newsletter containing the gory details, contact the Notes editor. In the meantime, our thanks to Bill and the LABCC for their highly entertaining news.

We have a couple of cars this month, starting with Larry and Mary Kay Brown’s 1963 TR3B...which, truth be known, is not actually a work in progress (it was at one time) but provides a fascinating example of multi-generational enjoyment of Triumph sports cars.

Larry bought the TR3B—referred to as the “LWBC” (Little White British Car) in May 1966 from DeBrecht Imports, replacing a 1957 Chevy. He subse-quently bought “...just about ever factory competition part offered” by Leyland Triumph-Midwest and set the car up for E Production racing, primarily at Mid-America Raceway in Wentzville (see Exhaust Notes, August 2008).

Year’s later, Larry still has the TR; as he put, the overhauled vehicle is stree-table and “...available for dry weather touring and taking the grandkids for rides around the neighborhood.”

For more of the story, call up www.sltoa.org/members/Brown/

Larry_Brown_TR3B.htm.

Next up, Dick Olds’ 1966 TR4A. He’s converted it from a TR4 with coil-over shocks, 174hp GM Ecotec 2.4L engine (about 150 pounds lighter than the stock TR4 engine) and a five-speed GM 5L40E electronic transmission (as Dick put it, “...if Ferrari and Porsche can do it”). Concerning the rear-end swap, Dick installed a TR6 crossmember for mount-ing of the IRS; while he was at it, he added rear rotors from a 1994 Nissan 240SX and rebuilt calipers from an ‘84 Nissan Maxima. The fronts are rebuilt 4-piston calipers from an ‘83 Toyota 4WD pickup with stock TR rotors.

Dick hopes to join the club on some drives next summer. In the meantime, you can check the details on the progress of his project, including the electronics, at www.sltoa.org/members/Olds/TR4.htm.

These two vehicle updates are examples of the type of information and photos now going into the SLTOA web site’s members’ section. Veep/President Emeritus Creig Houghtaling is still working furiously to update the members’ section with new photos and information.

As mentioned last month, Veep/President Emeritus Creig Houghtaling is still working furiously to update the web page’s mem-bers section. Feel free to send in photos and info on your cars, Creig will take it from there. AND, as always, check the results at www.sltoa/org/members.

Larry Brown then: Prom Night.

Larry Brown now: Gpa’s LWBC!

Backwards Glance: Standard Goes Rallying

“This 1955 Standard 10 competed in the 1994 Rallye Monte Carlo Historique, and was likely allowed entry because these cars were extensively entered from 1955 to 1966…(it) is now available here on eBay in West Hampstead, United Kingdom for £3999 (today ~$6400)”

– Bring A Trailer, 8 November 2012

While Triumph held a long history of competition success, as related in numerous books, magazine articles and videos, it’s something of a surprise when the name “Standard” shows up in the context of motorsports. Standard, as in the British sa-loon (sedan, for you unrequited colonists) manufacturer which never built a sports car. Standard, as in the rather solid but unexciting company which bought the ruins of the Triumph Motor Car Company in 1945.

However, as the above ad from Bring A Trailer indicates, Standard did indeed run competitively in rallies during the mid-1950s. Besides Monte Carlo, they included the annual York-shire Sports Car Club Rally; the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Rally; the Sheffield & Hallamshire Rally of the Dams; and the MCC National Rally.

Drivers started running Triumphs in competitive events dur-ing the late 1920s, including participation in hill climbs, time trials and track events at locales such as the famous Brook-lands Motor Racing Circuit. The Triumph Company decided to move into actual factory participation during the 1930s, particu-larly following the 1933 hiring of a young Cornishman as its technical director. His name? Donald Healey (Healey de-parted the company following its 1939 descent into administra-tion—i.e., bankruptcy—but obviously went on to bigger and better things).

Standard? Save for some private efforts, the company’s vehicles never turned a wheel in anger until after the 1945 £75,000 (about $302,000) purchase of what was left of Tri-umph. Seven years later, in October 1952, the renamed Stan-dard-Triumph unveiled the 20TS prototype sports car at the London Motor Show at Earls Court. The car featured an en-gine from the full-size Standard Vanguard saloon, suspension from the Triumph Mayflower and the chassis from the new Standard 8. After substantial testing and redesign – including a new, purpose-designed chassis – the 20TS became the TR2

and almost immediately went into competition, both on the track and in European rallies.

As for the Stan-dard 8, the company introduced the car in 1953 as a smaller, cheaper companion to the company’s primary saloon, the Vanguard. Fitted with an 803cc en-gine, independent suspension and hy-draulic brakes, it sold for only £481 (about $764 at the time), making it the least expensive four-door car in the British market. The low price came at an, er, price: the 8 featured sliding windows, had no external access to the boot (the owner had to fold the rear seatback in order to load luggage) and no chrome. The Stan-dard 10, introduced in 1954, added a chrome grill, roll-up win-dows, the boot lid and a thundering 30 horsepower from its larger 948cc engine.

Standard-Triumph entered postwar competition in 1953, when it put two modified TR2s into Italy’s Mille Miglia and the Monte Carlo Rally.

The latter, initiated by Prince Albert I in 1911 and formally titled Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo, had long served as one of the major automotive events of Europe, both for testing of cars (and their drivers) and for automotive sales and advertis-ing purposes. Frenchman Henri Rougier took the initial event in a Turcat-Méry, besting 22 other cars. The event continued to grow from there, building up to nearly 400 vehicles which sallied forth annually from multiple locations in Europe, heading for Monte Carlo. The Rally ran again in 1912 but, due to inter-national tensions culminating in World War I, didn’t resume until 1924.

In 1925, a British car won for the first time: Victor Bruce and W.J. Brunell took the honors, running an Auto-Carrier from England (Auto-Carrier later changed its name to match its ini-tials: AC Cars, Ltd). World War II forced another break in the annual competition; it resumed in 1949.

In 1953, a single Standard Vanguard entered the Monte Carlo but did not start, due to illness of the driver. But, the 1954 event saw a brace of Standards participate, including the still new, still seriously underpowered Standard 8.

Run over 18-25 January, the event commenced with 363 cars streaming out of Glasgow, Scotland; Lisbon, Portugal; Ath-ens, Greece; Palermo, Italy; Oslo, Norway;

Stockholm, Sweden; and Munich, Germany. Upon arrival in Monaco, the first 100 cars engaged in a time trial around the grand prix course, plus a navigation run over the Col de Turini and other mountain passes, leading to the ultimate winner

In Glasgow, the Royal Scottish Automotive Club sent the first car out for the 2040 mile excursion at 1:09 PM, with additional

9

cars leaving on the minute. Not surprisingly, the competitors who staged from Scotland drove a wide range of English vehi-cles, in keeping with the importance of the Monte Carlo event. Besides Standard, private and factory-supported entrants in-cluded Sunbeam-Talbot, Hillman, Riley, Ford, Morris, Jaguar, Alvis, Rover, Lagonda, Jewett, Humber, Austin, Bentley, Vaux-hall, Morris, Singer and Wolseley.

Dennis O’M. Taylor and Lew Tracey drove one of the Stan-dard 8s and, amazingly enough, placed 45th. The Standard Club described their finish as “…very impressive…bearing in mind the car had a near standard 803cc engine was weighed down with rally equipment, including compulsory de-ditching equipment.” No other Standards finished in the top 100, al-though several did complete the run. Louis Chiron and Ciro Basadonna took the 1954 rally in a Lancia Aurelia; interestingly enough, Stirling Moss and John Cooper, teamed with Des-mond Scannell, placed 15th in a Sunbeam-Talbot 90

In 1955, the Monte Carlo served once again as the first race of the rally season, running over 17-23 January with cars de-parting from Glasgow, Munich, Lisbon, Stockholm, Athens, Oslo and Palermo. In weather described as “atrocious,” acci-dents ruled the day; no surprise, considering issues with snow, fog, the occasional avalanche, etc. This time around the Stan-dard Motor Company entered four 10s but only two finished in the top 100. Several teams which staged from Great Britain pulled the plug before hitting the Channel. However, a British Car—a Sunbeam-Talbot 90—won the rally, albeit driven by Per Malling and Gunnar Fadum out of Oslo, Norway.

Britannia ruled again in 1956 with a victory by Ronnie Adams, Frank Big-gar and Derek Johnstone in a Jag-uar MkVII. Four Standard 10s com-peted but appar-ently none finished; Maurice Gatson-ides and M. Bec-quarat, who staged out of Lisbon, came

in 8th in a Standard III while a Vanguard finished 92nd.

The Monte Carlo Rally and two other events—the RAC and Alpine Rallies— didn’t run in 1957, a result of gas rationing following the 1957 Suez Crisis. In 1958, two Standard 10s ran and finished a credible 13th and 15th.

Standard continued to run or support cars in the Monte Carlo through 1962, with middling results. The 1959 event consti-tuted a French romp, with the top three places taken by a Cit-roen ID19, Simca P60 and Deutsche Bonnet-Panhard, followed by a Sunbeam Rapier. However, a Standard driven by I. Lewis and H. Nash finished 25th, ahead of two Triumph TR3s. No Standards ran in the 1960 rally, won by three Mercedes-Benz 220SEs, although C. Corbishley finished 25th driving a new Triumph Herald. In 1962, a single Standard – probably an Ensign – com-peted but didn’t place. That attempt marked the end of the Standard mar-que in competi-t ive driv ing events.

The name “Standard” itself went by the boards as an independent brand shortly after-wards. In 1957, Standard-Triumph released a badge-engineered version of the 10 known as the (surprise!) Triumph 10 (no, not the “TR10,” just Triumph 10). Done primarily to take advantage of Triumph sports cars’ wild success in the United States, the company used the “new” car as a means of breaking into the US’ sedan market. However, it didn’t sell well

– only 9907 Triumph 10 sedans and 7351 “estate wagons” found owners in the colonies – but me-chanically the Stan-dard/Triumph 10 paved the way for the Herald, Spitfire and several other models. In 1960, Leyland Motors acquired Standard-Triumph. The Ensign Deluxe served as the last

Standard-badged car; in 1963, Leyland shifted saloon produc-tion to the Triumph 2000 (Standards continued in production in India until 1987). In 1970, Leyland changed the name of its subsidiary from Standard-Triumph to the Triumph Motor Com-pany.

Finally, while Triumphs continued to rally worldwide, works efforts pretty much ended…until shortly before the demise of the make. But, the story of the rally wedges can wait for an-other day.
