of the original space while expanding its function. Thus the soaring carved wood ceiling of the orig-inal Chapel provides a fitting home for a beautiful new organ from Pasi Organ Builders in Roy, Wa., and moveable chairs and altar allow for new uses such as concerts, recitals, retreats, and different types of services. In recent months, the remodeling vision has begun to unfold as the Chapel played host to Vacation Bible Camp, an auction on behalf of the Epiphany Early Learning Preschool, twice-weekly meditations, and two piano celebrations to wel-come the Chapel’s newly acquired 1901 Hamburg Steinway piano. On Sept. 11, the public is invited to be part of the dedication recital of the new Pasi organ in the Chapel with 3:00 and 6:00pm perfor-mances by organist Carole Terry who is a Profes-sor of Organ and Harpsichord at the UW and an Artist-in-Residence at Epiphany.

At the same time that the Chapel space offers potential for new uses, it remains in active use for Sunday morning and evening services, and it con-tinues to be the worship place for the Holy Trinity

Epiphany Embraces Future (from page one) Ukrainian Orthodox congregation that has held their services in the Chapel for almost 60 years. After a visit to the larger Church to see refinished pews, refurbished stained glass, and changes to improve acoustics and ease of use, we traveled downstairs to peek into classrooms and follow the sounds of children’s joyful laughter in an outdoor play space for Epiphany Early Learning Preschool (part of Sound Child Care Solutions). During the remodel, the four preschool class-rooms were rearranged to surround the play-ground. On Sundays, those same spaces are Sunday school classrooms. A former classroom was combined with a second room to offer a music wing where choirs rehearse and voice lessons are enjoyed.

An adjacent building hosts the Great Hall where the congregation held a reception for 450 to celebrate completion of the remodel. Complete-ly renovated, the Great Hall is now a beautiful space available for public use as well as for Church gatherings; it is a practice space for Se-attle Pro Musica and other organizations; and it has witnessed many a birthday party. Leschi ArtWalk On Sept. 10Leschi celebrates its 5th annual ArtWalk on Septem-ber 10 from 11:00am-4:00pm. The arts and crafts displays will be placed along the east side of the business district (Lakeside Ave.) In addition to jew-elry designers, photographers, and visual artists, we have attracted some gustatory delights: Bunneh’s Bakery is a new participant. There are many photos of their tantalizing products on Leschi Community Council’s website at http://www.leschicommunity-council.org/. And Lanier’s Chocolates will be back with their handmade delicacies. All in beautiful “downtown” Leschi!

This year we have expanded to Leschi Park with more activities for children. In addition to the awe-some slide from last year, there will be craft tables and guided nature walks. Children can make their own jewelry creation with Laurel Allen, who teaches jewelry making at the Senior Center. Captain Kim-mie, who leads the opening parade, will also lead children on nature walks through the park in the afternoon. Check the September Leschi News for a complete schedule of children’s activities and the music schedule at the website listed above.

On the Leschi Park stage, we will hear the Tabernacle Church Band (and they rock!) at 11:00am; In Rio Time (Brazilian jazz) at 1:00pm. and the Stephanie Porter Band at 2:15pm.

Meet at the stage at 10:50 if your child wishes to march in the Biggest Smallest Parade!

Epiphany Embraces Future (from prior page)spaces available for public and private use include the remodeled Fireside Room and kitchen as well as the adjacent garden where the governing body of the church (the Vestry) invited all current and past Vestry committee members to gather at a garden party reception. In the tension-filled Madrona environment of the 1960s and ‘70s, Epiphany partnered with St. Therese Catholic Church and the Madrona Grace Presby-terian Church in social outreach programs. Today Epiphany partnerships continue with Teen Feed to meet the basic needs of homeless youth, with the East Cherry YWCA in helping to provide Back-to-School backpacks, Christmas gifts, Easter baskets, and other needed supplies for women and families in need, and with Wellspring Family Services which serve low-income and vulnerable individuals and families. Every Friday evening, Epiphany hosts eight to twelve homeless men as part of Operation Night-watch. These programs, the remodel that led to a much more community-friendly space, and many other activities suggest that Epiphany has truly em-braced the motto from their Vestry Garden Recep-tion to “Remember the Past, Honor the Present, and

Embrace the Future.”*For additional information about Epiphany’s history, also see the History Link piece by Madrona resident Mary Henry found at http://www.historylink.org/_content/printer_friendly/pf_output.cfm?file_id=7825

Neighborhood School News and ActivitiesBy Matthew DeBoer, Neighbor and Principal at

St. Therese Catholic Academy When the Labor Day holiday hits, the sounds of summer begin to transition to the sounds of a new school year - children’s chatter, bells, loud speakers and the joy of reuniting with familiar faces and meeting new friends for life. Here in Madrona there is a distinct change of pace from the camps that take over our schools’ campuses in the summertime to the start of a school year. While these camps serve irreplaceable roles in the community, providing safe, positive and engag-ing environments for our children to grow in, our schools are the foundation for our shared future. Like politics, particularly in this election year, education is a topic that can quickly get people fired up, talking, and too often divided. While diverse opinions about what is the “right” or “best” or “cost-effective” solution is always welcome in the educational field, we should all agree on one thing: our children are the future.Whether they are enrolled in public or private schools, secular or religious, our children are the future. Teachers, administrators, counselors, cus-todians, artists, various specialists, and volunteers give of themselves daily to help our children learn and grow. We have standards, expectations and benchmarks that all students must strive for and meet academically, but as a community, we all share the social responsibility of providing good role models and examples for our children. In a day and age where children have instant access to information and examples--both positive and negative--at their fingertips, we must all remem-ber and honor our responsibility to be positive examples for our children. They will remember what we do far more than what we “teach.” I encourage all who have time or talent that can

benefit our children to reach out to our neighbor-hood schools: Madrona PK-8, St. Therese, Epipha-ny, any early childhood learning environment and see how you can get involved with our youth. It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child, but it is rarely acted upon. As another school year begins, we have an invitation to act on this call, and my hope is that we respond with a resound-ing YES. After all, our children deserve it.St. Therese Stepping it Up in 2016-2017As Aug. comes to a close and the month of Sept. nears, St. Therese Catholic Academy is primed to begin its 89th school year on Aug. 29. STCA continues to grow and is looking at beginning this year with over 140 students, a 20% growth over the last two years. After spending the last two years looking inward, STCA’s theme for 2016-2017 is “Go, and make disciples of all nations.” This theme has three subthemes within it. The first is “GO” – we are called to step out of our comfort zone to go out and serve others. This will be ac-complished this year by launching a school-wide service-learning program for all students. The second theme is “MAKE DISCIPLES” – we are called to spread the Good News near and far by living our faith with our actions first, and words second. The model of Pope Francis in the world is helping millions do this better on a regular basis, and this is a daily focus at St. Therese. The final theme is “ALL NATIONS” – we are called to recognize and honor all people in the world – both near and far – as our very own brothers and sisters. In a time where our nation and world seem as divided as ever, St. Therese invites all of its students to gain a grounded understanding of who they are and who they are in our diverse community. Through courageous conversations on race and culture, special events celebrating the community’s di-

Wax Paper, Diapers, and SnowshoesBy Judith Starbuck, Grand Ave.

Have you noticed the size of the skunk cabbage (Ly-cichiton americium) leaves in the autumn Madrona Woods? Native peoples used them as their version of wax paper, to line berry baskets, berry drying racks, and steaming pits. As you walk through the Woods, think about some of the other trees and plants that have been used for survival and life enhancement. The Western red cedar (Thuja plicata) was called the tree of life. Native peoples used all parts of it to make everything from canoes and totem poles to hats and dresses and even diapers and sanitary nap-kins. The Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) had hard wood that was used for spear and harpoon handles, hooks and barbs, and fire tongs, and its pitch was used not only for caulking canoes but also as a salve for healing wounds. The Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) bark has a high tannin content and was used for dying and tanning. Its wood was carved into spoons, wedges and children’s bows, among other things. Our abundant Bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum) wood was used to make paddles and implements such as spindle whorls, its leaves were used to make temporary con-tainers, and a preparation was made from it to ease sore throats. Its little cousin the Vine maple (Acer circinatum) has flexible stems used to make snowshoe frames and drum hoops. The Salal (Gaultheria shallon) berry was a major food source for many native peoples, eaten fresh,

dried, or used to sweeten other berries, like Oregon grape (Mahonia nervosa or aquifolium) and Red Huckleberry (Vaccinium parvifolium). I have more to tell you about fascinating uses of plants, and that will come in future newsletters. Our fourth Saturday work parties will resume in Sept. from 10:00am-1:00pm on the fourth Sat. of the month. To learn details and to sign up ahead, go to cedar.greencitypartnerships.org and click on CEDAR. Put in Green Seattle Partnership and select Madrona Park. Indicate that you’ll be attending. You can visit our website at www.madronawoods.org or Face-book for more information.

Madrona Garage Sale Solid as UsualThe Madrona Neighborhood Garage Sale 2016, led by Madrona neighbor Amy Summers, took place on June 18. Approximately twenty five neighbors reg-istered their garage sale events on the MCC website, and were listed on the participants’ map and infor-mation list. Many thanks to Amy for her work to put up signs, create a map and list of participants, and otherwise help make the garage sale a memorable event. Funds raised in the event support Madrona neighborhood activities, such as the Halloween Party, the Madrona Concert Series, and the Madrona News.

Madrona Dining & Sipping Society By Audrey Seale, 36th Ave.Our last dinner event of the spring season was very special. We do love FareStart, their mission, the celebrity chefs, everything, but this time, it was over the top: Renee Erickson was the celeb-rity chef and she brought with her the three chefs

from her 10th and E. Union restaurant row. We all got to meet them. Starbucks provide the serving volunteers and when we asked our wait person what he did for Starbucks, he said he was in charge of coffee. LOL we said oh yeah, everyone at Starbucks is the head of coffee but the laugh was on us: our server was none other than Star-bucks’ EVP for Global Coffee Craig Russell.... and he made an excellent cup of after-dinner coffee! You do want to be a part of our great times. So if you are not yet on the Madrona Dining & Sipping Society email list, please contact Audrey Seale [email protected] and you will receive evites to upcoming events. All we ask is that if you RSVP yes, you treat that reservation with respect. Our arrangements with our restaurant hosts do not work for no-shows. We arrange great value special meals with our local restau-rant partners and we always have great food, great conversations, great times.... all of which makes for a great neighborhood.

8 Madrona News Month Year

Neighborhood News and NotesAnyone who has visited Madrona’s “Central Business District” will have noticed the beauti-ful flower baskets provided by Madrona Blos-soms and by the many merchants who inde-pendently plant pots and window boxes to brighten everyone’s days. Also we thank the anonymous Madrona neighbor who cleaned out the small circular garden on the SW corner of 34th Ave. and Spring St.

Thanks also to those responsible for request-ing funds to repave Spring St. between 34th Ave. and the curve onto 32nd Ave.

Those who enter or exit Madrona via Union St. have doubtless seen the newly installed reader board at 32nd and Union to promote Madrona PK-8 and MCC events. Shared funding from the school PTSA and the MCC made this new addition to the neighborhood possible.

You may have noticed the addition of street crossing flags at many junctions on 34th Ave. These were provided by the Madrona Com-munity Council to help people cross safely. Ideally, use of these flags will remind motorists that the Madrona streets are quite busy with pedestrian traffic.

United Way and NoKidHungry joined forces with local organizations and many city parks to provide free summer meals and snacks, as well as camp activities, for children and teens under 18. At neighborhood spaces such as Madrona Park, Garfield Community Center, Powell Burnett Park, and Peppi’s Park (as well as other spaces throughout the city), Seattle’s Child Nutrition Program served food week-days from June 29-Aug. 26. The summer food program as billed as a summer food invasion, including a big United Way Summer Food Invasion Field Day. It was an 11:30-3:00pm carnival like affair for parents and children at Pratt Field on Aug. 16.August spells festivals and outdoor events for Seattle, including Seafair that brings lots of noise to the neighborhood from hydroplanes and airplanes both old and new. The annual Umoja Fest parade on Aug. 6 was a lively affair, starting at 23rd and Cherry with various twists

and turns to end at Judkins Park for an after-noon of fun and games. On Aug. 16, Cherry St. from MLK to 23rd Ave. was host to BEGO--the Ethiopian Summer Street Festival--which devoted most of the day to Ethiopian music, dance, crafts, food, and wares. To keep abreast of festivals and events throughout Seattle, keep an eye on http://www.events12.com/seattle/. And be sure to send your events to the site for listings there.

The Madrona Community Council continues its search for volunteers for two important tasks. One is to tend to the circular garden on the SW corner of Spring and 34th Ave. An-other is to manage advertisements for the Madrona News. For additional information or to volunteer for either position, contact [email protected].

If you have the chance to visit Astoria, OR on Sept. 18, be sure to stop by Fort Clatsop Visitor Center Netul River Room to hear Madrona his-torian/author Junius Rochester speak on The Kanaka Connection: Hawaiians in the 19th Century Fur Trade. The 18th is a Sunday, and the talk begins at 1:00pm.

Madrona News Month Year 9

Concerts at Madrona PlayfieldFor the fourth year running, Madrona Community Council and sponsor Ewing and Clark scheduled Thursday night concerts at the Madrona Playfield. Turnout has been great with over 200 gathering for each concert. Most brought picnic meals to share with friends, spread blankets on the ground, and enjoyed the concerts while lounging. The crowd was young and old, and among them were many, many small children who delighted in the music, the playground, and the sheer delight to be outside late on a summer evening. Starting off on Aug. 1 was Mud Junket, followed by Kitten Patrol. Interestingly, Kitten Patrol is comprised of five girls ages 10-15 who play and sing blues and soul mu-sic. Following on Olympics victories, Kitten Patrol changed the band name to Mrs. Phelps on the eve of their performance. Still to come at press time was a jazz performance with the Katy Bourne Trio, and the Professors on Aug. 25. The latter provided an eclectic blend of roots rock, alt-country, psy-chedelia, and rockabilly. The MCC is already looking at possibilities for sum-mer concerts in August of 2017. If you are part of a musical group or know of one whose music you think would be popular with a summer audience, please let us know at [email protected].

Madrona Real EstateBy Kristine Losh, Ewing and Clark

The Madrona real estate market has remained steady this summer as compared to last year. The number of total sales are about equal: 19 sales in 2015 versus 20 sales for the same time period in 2016 (June through the mid-August writing of this piece). What has changed in a year is an increase in sale prices. For example, the highest sales price in summer of 2015 was $1,650,000.  This summer there are two sales over that amount, one home down on Lake Washington Blvd. sold for $3,500,000 and an-other on 36th Ave. sold for $2,598,888.  The median sales price was at $1,077,500, a $248,500 rise from July of 2015. In both 2015 and 2016, homes tend to sell for their list price or above.Central Seattle real estate, which includes Madro-na but also includes the area from the Montlake cut to I-90 and from Lake Washington to I-5, also is showing signs of strengths. The median year-to-date sales price is up from $829,000 (July 2015) to $1,077,500 (2016), and the average year-to-date is up from $924,950 (July 2015) to $1,310,000 (2016).  Thus, the strong real estate market is not only in Madrona but the surrounding areas as well.
