Name Tag Reminder

Please wear a name tag when at-tending any Ozark Woodturners club function. If you aren’t wearing a name tag, you may be asked to stand and introduce yourself.

Spouses and Visitors

Spouses and visitors are always welcome at our meetings.

For Sale Table & Raffle Bring woodworking tools or accesso-ries that you want to sell. Please make the deal before the meeting, during the break, or after the meeting. Also, bring any extra wood, tools, sandpaper, or anything that you may have for the raf-fle. Visitors are welcome to partici-pate. The raffle tickets are $1.00 each and the proceeds go to the club treas-ury. Every ticket is drawn and the choice is made in the order the tickets are drawn.

A replica of an early Native Ameri-can vessel found at an archeological dig site in Arkansas, turned and carved from walnut by club member Joe Parks.

In lieu of our regular October meeting, there will be a dem-onstration and hands-on class by professional wood turner David Ellsworth. This event will be held on October 15th and 16th at the Northeast Lakeside Fire Department Fa-cility, at 5520 Hwy 62 East in Mountain Home. Events on both days will begin at 9:00 AM. Walk-ins can pay at the door for the Saturday event.

Greetings Turners, At this time, the focus is the Ellsworth demonstration and hands-on class on October 15th and 16th. I think progress on the event is go-ing along fine. I was about to panic when the guy who was lined up to cut a tree for our demo wood took off to Pennsylvania to buy a truck. Talk about getting your priorities straight. Anyway, I contacted a sawyer in the Midway area and he had a very nice maple log about 7 feet long. I had to pay $10.00 for it. I processed it and it seems to be very nice wood. After Ellsworth makes his pick

we can put what is left in the club raffle. To all who will be helping with demo prepara-tion, remember that we will meet at the fire station on Friday the 15th at 1:00 PM. Mike Osmundson and I will be helping Jim Pruitt transport his lathe and I will have a lot of equipment to transport also, so I may not be there exactly at 1:00 PM. I think every-one is aware of what they are scheduled to bring. If anyone needs help loading or transporting items, let me know at 870-507-0007 and we will get it worked out. I will see you there. Basic Turning Course The club offers a “Basics of Wood Turning” class to its members. The next available class dates will be in November, 2016. If you are interested, please contact Kenneth Higgins at (870) 405-7283 or e-mail him at higgs52@suddenlink.net. ……………………………………………………. Phil Wiles Open Shop Phil’s shop will be open to members for free lessons and and turning advice on various Tuesdays 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM (bring your lunch, if needed). Please call 870-499-7746 to let him know who is coming, and when. He would like to keep it to four people, or fewer, at a time.

Treasurer’s Report: The club bank balance is $5,221.67, including $1,026.28 earmarked for our VA support activities and registration fees collected for the Ellsworth demo scheduled for October. Programs and Events Update: CAVHS (Veterans wood turning program support) Update: The following members are preparing pen turning blanks: Darcie Didden, Jerry Jernigan, Gerald Garrison, Red

Murr, Jerry Hankins, and Joe Meskaitis. Please try to get these back to Jim Pruitt before Oct. 15th as there won’t be a regular meeting on the 15th.

Mike Osmundson and Jim Pruitt prepared 20 sets of pen blanks (these were handed over to Michael Dobbs of the VA at the DAV picnic).

Michael Dobbs also delivered a large quantity of brass pen tubes for our club members to prepare. Phil Wiles has donated a considerable amount of wood for the VA pen turning project. James Pruitt has cut this

wood into the correct size for pen blanks. We now have plenty of wood blanks and brass tubes for more pen turning kits to deliver to the VA. OWT volunteers are needed to complete the kits.

To learn more about our support of the VA wood turning program, see our web site or James Pruitt. Our Veterans could use your personal assistance at their “Turning Center”. Call James Pruitt to make arrange-

At a Mountain Home Disabled American Veterans(DAV) event held on October 1st, the Ozark Wood-turners were recognized by the VA and the DAV for our volunteer efforts in supporting the wood turning program at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System in Little Rock.
