Ahoy All Hands. We ended our summer with our first official meeting at Mary Schneider’s home and a Banquet fit for Admiralty then, headed into fall with our first Rum Race. Your OBRS Co-Commodore somehow earned the T.H.E. Gavel and he is getting desperate to pass it on. He will be bringing it with him wherever he shows up so – be on guard. We have many more events planned now especially in October! So, don’t be a castaway, be there for whatever events that you can be there for. Looking ahead after October, please note from the revised Calendar in this Newsletter that our Pot- Luck meeting in November will be held at Margartaville along with the Fall Rum Race awards. And December is our annual Christmas Party, this year being held at Skip & Lou Archibald’s. We planned that date so as not to conflict with the popular Lights on Lake Weir event. In the mean time, be sure to join me and the Gavel at Gator Joe’s for Thursday’s Buccaneer night! SECRETARY’S REPORT MINUTES OF THE POT-LUCK DINNER / SEPTEMBER 15, 2016

Commodore John Cicio called the meeting to order at a little after 8:00 PM.

John Cicio offered a huge THANKS to our host, Mary Schneider, for hosting the September Pot-LuckDinner Meeting.

All Ocala Sailing Club members that celebrated birthdays in the months of June, July, August, andSeptember were announced and congratulated.

John Cicio asked the members if all club communications were good - no complaints were reported.

Jan Cole delivered the Treasurer's Report:Past Balance $2,908.38Expenses ($ 9.90)Income $ 75.00Ending Balance $2,973.48A motion was made to accept the Treasurer's Report and seconded.

Membership Dues were discussed - annual dues are supposed to be paid in the month of June.

Our monthly calendar needed hosts for the Pot-Luck Dinner meetings, the following volunteered: • Mark and Bobbie Ciraco offered to host on 10/20/2016 • Jim and Lisa Edens offered to host in Spring 2017 but it would have to be on a weekend • Amy Bonnert offered to host for the February 2017 meeting

The Secretary's Report was approved as published in the September Newsletter on the OSC website.

The need for additional race marker buoys was discussed. We currently have 4 new buoys and 4 oldbuoys. A motion was made and seconded to buy 4 additional buoys prior to the Sunset HarborChallenge Regatta in October. Art Twitchell will purchase the additional buoys.

The trophies for the Sunset Harbor Challenge Regatta were discussed. A photo showing our pasttrophies of Rum with custom-made labels (by Art Twitchell) was passed around. All agreed that thelabels look great. Lynn Sims suggested that Appleton Rum be purchased for the trophies.

Respectfully submitted,Jan Cole - Treasurer

Old BusinessFour sailors would like to reschedule the Crescent Lake Cruise in November due to a conflict with the Bear Island Regatta. It will be discussed further at our October meeting.

New BusinessCommodore John Cicio expressed how grateful he is to be our new Commodore. John Cicio presented the following ideas to the membership:

• Meeting Sign-In Sheet at our monthly meetings to show accountability.• The purchase of an American Flag with Pedestal to display at all meetings. • Display the OBRS Flag at all meetings.

A motion was made and seconded to approve these ideas.

The need for a new Racing Commodore was discussed. This is an "appointed" position. Bob Cole explained the duties and is willing to help. Lynn Sims explained the Vice Commodore involvement with our annual Regatta's. Bob Cole has offered to create the NOR (Notice of Race) for both our Fall and Spring Regatta's and contact David Moring for the update of the Regatta Registration Website: www.regattaregistration.com prior to the Regatta's.

Commodore John Cicio discussed his review of the Ocala Sailing Club documentation published on the website. Some of the documentation refers to committee's and positions that we do not currently have:

• Membership Committee• Activities Committee• Annual Regatta Committee• Program Integrator

He asked the membership if these committee's are currently needed. After some discussion, it was decided that these committee's and positions are not needed.

Ed Sims noticed that the Crescent Lake Cruise was removed from the current OSC Calendar because it conflicted with the Bear Island Regatta. Four OSC sailors are planning to sail in the Bear Island Regatta: Ed Sims, Jim Edens, Ross Martin, and Art Twitchell.

Jim Edens discussed an upcoming Fun Day of Sailing on Lake Santa Fe in Gainesville. He will send the flyer to John Cicio.

Mary Schneider announced that someone left a beach chair in her pontoon boat over a year ago. It is still unclaimed.

The OSC Meeting was adjourned at 8:43 PM.

OBRS MeetingThe OBRS Meeting was brought to order at 8:45 PM.

A total of $54 was collected for the 50/50 Raffle. Jan Schumacher was the lucky winner and took home $27!

Jan Schumacher awarded The Gavel to John Cicio. John admitted to "googling" Yachtstown, Nebraska and T.H.E. Admiral earlier in the evening. He also told the group that he actually found information on the internet for Beer and Rafting Societies ~ clearly a gavel offense!

The OBRS Meeting ended at 8:51 PM. Also, Thanks to Jan Schumacher for taking the minutes for the secretary who couldn’t be there.

Ocala Sailing Club First Pot-Luck Meeting of the Season Summer vacations have played out with most of the members and with

the sailing season imminent, September became our first formal Pot-Luck Dinner meeting. Mary Schneider was most gracious in

volunteering to host this event and John led us in a vibrant kick-off

meeting. Jan Schumacher was there with her trusty camera and caught

these moments in the meeting.

Jan Cole implemented

our ever-fruitful 50/50 raffle and Jan Schumacher was the winner

of the $27.

John Cicio was the winner of the GAVEL

The map below gives a diagram of the course we took last year around Lake Weir showing the racing marker locations.

This year will be similar, but those details will be formalized at the skipper’s meeting.

Visualize your sailboat in with the ones below and let’s have a great group of OSC sailors make the Race!

Fall Rum Race #1 for 2016 ( Sept 25th )

Ross has his eyes set on winning that Big Bottle of Appleton Gold Rum trophy which will be awarded at the Rum Race # 3 event on Nov 5th (Margartaville Party). His sailboat, “Pivot”, came in 6 minutes before runner-up Art’s, “Little Leviathan” on Sunday Oct 25th.Sailors and crew members who sailed on that Sunday’s race were: Ross Martin, Lynn Sims,Bobbie Ciraco, John Cicio, Art Twitchell, Ed Sims and Mark Ciraco. We all waited till after 3 PM before the wind kicked up to a 4 mph breeze. But we managed to get in one race for the fall’s first Rum Race of the season. Rum Race #2 is October 29th. Hope we have good wind and a robust turnout for the next 2 Rum Races.

•Intra-Lake Sailing and OSC•October 1st & 2nd, 2016 Lake Monroe Sailing Association is having their annual Sanford Fall Regatta. We have a long history of participating in their events and have many friends in their club. Last year they had many LMSA sailors join in our two regattas. The Sanford Fall Regatta is much like our OSC Lake Weir Invitational Regatta held in April where 5 races over 2 days is typical and the competition is spirited. Perhaps one of our entries will bring home a proud trophy from Sanford this year. We also have participated in other events sponsored by other clubs. Please refer to our Website at www.ocalasailingclub.org and look under the “RACING” tab and take notice of our Sailing Alliance of Inland Lakes for members & schedules. Or just pick up a conversation with Ed Sims about it.
