NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2013
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The end of the year is a good time for reflection, to look at what we have accomplished, to look at what we still want to achieve, and to make improvement where they are needed. The past year has been a really wonderful year. First and foremost, I would like to welcome the new members who have joined our association. I am also very grateful to see the passionate donors, members, officers and volunteers who invested their time and donation on behalf of the association to help us provide wonderful experiences for the entire membership. Our association has many activities lined up for the year. We started the year with our Valentine Party where the new officers were officially inducted, followed by the Mardigras fundraising for Resurrection church, then the World Festival in April, the annual picnic last June , the parade participation during the Rochesterfest and our participation on" Thursday on first" which was received enthusiastically. Now, we are lining up for Salvation Ringers to help with their Christmas fundraising, Caroling to Nursing Homes to spread goodwill to the Senior community , of course our own caroling to Filipino Homes to raise funds for our association. With the current tragic devastation that befell our country, we are actively raising funds for our “kababayan" affected by the recent typhoon with massive flood and devastation
.We are appealing for help. We started a donation drive and will continue to have fundraising activities as needed. The year 2014 will start with our participation with the Fundraising of Eagles Cancer Telethon at Mayo civic center. The success of our organization is not possible without the active support of our officers, donors, and participation of our members. I would like to recognize all of you for your service. I invite you to share your thoughts, ideas, and feedback to improve our organization. Our website (philamrochestermn.com ) provides contact information. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events which is”Simbang Gabi” (night mass) Dec. 20 and Christmas celebration, Dec. 21. Details are included in our Newsletter. “Together we can make a difference, “God Bless!

WHAT IS SIMBANG GABI?
Simbang Gabi (Night Mass; Spanish: Misa de Gallo “Rooster’s Mass") is a series of 9 dawn masses from December 16 to Christmas Eve. Attending the Masses is meant to show devotion to God and heightened anticipation for Christ’s birth. Most people believe that God grants the special wish of a devotee that hears all nine Masses. Shortly after the mass, traditional delicacies offer by food vendors right outside the church, are enjoyed by churchgoers. Over the years, Filipinos communities have made some changes in the celebration of Simbang Gabi. Many urban parishes now celebrate Simbang Gabi around 8 or 9 in the evening, not just in the morning. The custom is also kept among Filipinos living elsewhere in the world. No matter how or when this celebration takes place, the annual Simbang Gabi provides a strong indication of the depth of Catholicism in the hearts of Filipinos.

Annual Summer Picnic 2013.
Last June 15, we held one of two big events of the year, the time in our busy lives where we reconnect with old friends,
and make new ones. Although the weatherman predicted some rain, we were pleasantly surprised with one of our
biggest turnout. It must be because of the yummy lechon that was provided year in, year out by our favorite Oriental
Store, Asia Pacific, or the promise of taste of the many delicious dishes proudly cooked and shared by our members, or
maybe because of halo-halo, a delicious icy dessert the members donated and sold to raise funds for Phil-Am. Anyway,
again it was a day enjoyed by young and old alike with games, pabitin, face-painting for the young, Zumba for the
health conscious adult, and tinikling try-outs for the daring and brave. Mayor Brede graced again the happy occasion
as he had in years past. Cutting this short since we do not have much space, we want to thank everyone again for
coming, for their financial support and commitment to keep our Association vibrant and alive, and to the officers and
many volunteers numerous to name here that make the event a success. We very much look forward to seeing you all
again next summer!
Maraming salamat po!
