Australian Long Board Champion!

One of our ex-students, who many of our students stay in touch with, won the Australian Long Board Surfing title recently at Port Macquarie. Congratulations to Kai Ellice-Flint on this fantastic achievement.

‘Rock and Water’

Last week I witnessed Mr Bradshaw lead a group of Year 9 boys through the graduation process for the Rock and Water program they have been attending for the past 12 weeks. The group have worked on goal setting for themselves and how to stay grounded in difficult situations. Mr Bradshaw has been very positive about the progress the boys have made and we will continue to work with them to try to achieve some of their goals. Yesterday’s task was to focus and break a piece of timber with their hand, this symbolising the inner strength that we all have to overcome difficult situations. All boys completed the task. Some did it the first time but all persevered and managed to break the timber by the end of the period. Congratulations to all those involved in the Program.

Congratulations Dawn and Debating Team!

Congratulations to Dawn Sexton and her team of Year 10 Debaters who successfully achieved the Zone winners title in 2013. Unfortunately they have since been beaten in a hard fought debate against the Gosford High team but should all be very proud of making it to the level they did. Team members are Olivia Bayliss, Olivia Cobbold, Elizabeth Jones, Alexandra Shaw, Nutana Soper and Tahlia Mathieson.

Year 11 Exams

Year 11 exams commence this week. I wish all students the best with these end of Preliminary course assessments. Solid preparation and revision is the best way to be prepared for examinations and I am assured by staff that many students are approaching these exams very seriously. The HSC course will commence in Term 4 for all of these students. Exams are a good way of assessing knowledge and understanding of course outcomes to this point in the course.

Wearing KHS uniform with pride!

Congratulations to all those students who are wearing the correct school uniform. I thank them and their parents for supporting the school in our aim to get all students to proudly wear the KHS uniform. I remind parents that maroon is not red and these NON RED jumpers are not school uniform and we would ask you not to purchase them. We are currently looking to expand some of the uniform options re winter wear but It will always be the current colours of RED and BLUE ONLY. If any family needs financial support to purchase a uniform please contact me to arrange this.

Future Royal Easter Show Champions Are Born

The first chickens have hatched out of the incubators and are being well cared for by many students who help on the farm during Breaks 1 and 2. Year 9 and 10 Agriculture classes collect the eggs and make sure they are carefully marked so we know the mother and father of each chicken.

While we hatch out cute little fluffy silver pencil Wyandotte chickens, we are trying to improve certain genetic traits which will enable Kincumber High School to continue winning at the major poultry shows next year.

Students are paying special attention to ensure the hens diet contains all the nutrients they require, along with plenty of grain and grass for scratching. The increased number of eggs being produced is a credit to the care taken by students this year to meet the needs of the hens.

Three incubators are being set continuously, with the aim of one hundred healthy chickens before the end of the breeding season in December.

We are hoping for a good hatch rate with lots of cute fluffy chickens to look after.

Year 11 “Super Learning Day” a super success!

Monday August 26 saw our Year 11 students take part in a “Super Learning Day”. The aim of the day was to not only provide students with useful study and exam techniques, but also to educate them about the importance of goal-setting, relaxation and finding that healthy balance between academic expectations and life outside of school. Feedback from the day was very positive, with many students finding the effective study techniques, relaxation workshop and session about how the brain and hormones affects learning the most enjoyable and beneficial. The sausage sandwich and drinks were also very popular at lunch!!

A huge thank you must go to all of the teachers involved in the day- Mr Ainsworth, Mr Fortey, Mrs Maljevac, Mr Waters and Mrs Sampford. Thank you also to our school counsellor, Sharon Read, and Debbie Thompson from Youth Connections, who came and spoke to the students about employment readiness, and to parent volunteers Victoria and Craig Gilbert-Smith for conducting the relaxation sessions. The day would not have been the success it was without your fantastic contribution.

We wish our students all the best for their upcoming final Preliminary HSC exams.

Mrs Lara Pratt and Mr Rod McRobie

bstreetsmart!

Our initial impression of the bstreetsmart excursion was one of hesitation, thinking that it would just be another excursion where we turn up and wish it was all over before the day had started.

Once we got to the Allphones Arena at Homebush, however, we all realised that this was a really big event with students attending from all different schools from around the State. At first we witnessed a live re-enactment of an accident scene which young adults such as ourselves could find ourselves in. Everyone was shocked especially me, and the entire arena was dead-silent for the whole hour-long crash scene. After the scene we all got to walk around the arena and do interactive things all to do with road safety. Some of these things included a simulated truck rollover, wheelchair basketball and discussions with emergency services personnel. Then some brain injury and road crash victims spoke about their experiences. It was a very eye-opening experience, and made all of us think before they act on the road.

It was one of the best educational excursions I’ve been on so far.

Learning from the master (chef)!

Julie Goodwin was welcomed at Kincumber High School by Year 12 Marine and Food Technology students. She is Australia’s first ‘Masterchef’ and she took time out of her busy schedule to cook two seafood recipes in our commercial kitchen, Crispy Whiting Fillets and Fennel Salad and Green Curry Prawns. Students and staff took delight in eating the delicious dishes prepared in style and enjoyed asking questions and having photos taken with Julie.

A snowchange!

On Sunday 4 August a large group of Year 11 PDHPE, CAFS and SLR students combined with a few Year 10 Sport Studies students and headed off for Smiggins Hole and Perisher Valley Snow Fields. After a brief stop at Canberra we arrived at the Southern Cross Motel in Berridale which was to be our base for the next few days.

With the snow still falling we headed out for our first day on the snow. Visibility and the wind chill factor tested many throughout the day!. Alex, however, was our only casualty who suffered a broken collar bone! Thank you Mrs Maljevac and Mr Bradshaw for your help in assisting Alex.

The conditions improved on the second day and after lessons and practice most students were easily navigating their way around the mountain! All students were well behaved throughout the trip making this a very enjoyable expedition!

National Art School Visit!

Such a fabulous day had by all!!! Too much fun to pack into one Saturday.

Clara Smith, Sienna Daniels, Matt Temperley and Raymond Matthews had a great day finding out about the treasures bestowed by the National Art School in Darlinghurst, East Sydney.

The pyromaniacs amongst us were seduced by the bronze casting demonstration, Leonardo Da Vinci’s absorbed the drawing lesson by one of the National Art School’s Top drawing tutors “Jenny”. We met Merran Esson, Head of Ceramics, who took us on tour of the Ceramics faculty and very generously allowed us to participate in a wheel throwing class. We also had a guided tour of the ‘world’s largest’ darkroom (a label of slight exaggeration by our group!!!!!***).

We spoke to many students and tutors who ‘sang the praises’ of this wonderful institution. In particular, the Year 11 Intensive studio practice course was a feature of the conversations, how to apply and what to include in the application portfolio.

We collected all the freebies, generously supplied by the NAS, including our very own NAS calico bag, which we created a heat transfer print on to.

It is always a pleasure taking our KHS students on excursion. They were interested, involved and such fabulous ambassadors for our school.

Central Coast Oz-tag Gala Day

On Tuesday 3 September, Kincumber High School had four teams represent the school at the Central Coast Oz-tag Gala Day. After a minor setback with the school mini-bus, all teams managed to arrive in time for their first match.

In the Year 9 & 10 competition, the Boys’ team drew their first match against Central Coast Grammar 1-1, although the game was replayed after a timing error caused the game to be finished five minutes early. In the replay, KHS dominated play and went on to win 6-1. This gave the boys momentum to win their next two pool games comfortably to quality for the finals. In a tough quarter final against Erina, the boys conceded two early tries and never recovered and were eliminated from the competition. Congratulations to Luke Goodley, Brendan Witt, Sean Townsend and Lewis Baker for creating and scoring some excellent tries, and Logan Staff for his outstanding defence.

The Year 9 & 10 Girls’ team also won their first three games, comfortably accounting for teams from Narara Valley High, Wyong High and BWSC. The girls easily qualified for the finals as the top team in their group, but were caught out by Lisarow who scored two tries near the start of the game to take an early lead. The Kincumber girls did not give up; scoring one try and throwing everything they had at the opposition try line but could not get on top. Standout performers throughout the day were Kirra Dibb and Lexi Clark.

The Open Boys’ team played three pool games and won them all. The boys then won a narrow semi-final that was a fantastic game and eventually went down in the final to Erina High School by a very small margin. All the boys were outstanding and displayed Kincumber High's great sporting spirit. Standout performers were Blake Wylie, Jake O'Brien, Mitchell Clark, Mitchell Jacob and Aaron Beehag.

The Open Girls took a while to get into the first game, however, they eventually got going and pulled off an easy win. The day continued with wins in every game up to the semi-finals. By this time, the girls were worn out and lost the semi-final in a tough game. Thanks to Tayla Monteith and Taylah Hartin for staying late and postponing their work commitments to play a great game, as well as Ashleigh Maljevac and Sian George who played extremely well in all games.

All students displayed excellent sportsmanship and determination and are to be congratulated on their outstanding performance. As teachers supervising on the day, we were all proud to be associated with these wonderful students. For the Year 12 students, it couldn’t have been a nicer end to their school sporting involvement.

The Year 7 and 8 Gala Day will be held next Tuesday 10 September.

Thank you to all staff who supported the teams throughout the day – Mrs O’Reilly, Mrs Toy, Mr Thorne.

Mr Batey, HT PDHPE

Love Bites!

Over the last two weeks Year 10 students have been involved in the Love Bites program. Love Bites educates young people about respectful relationships and seeks to reduce the incidence of relationship violence in the community. The program was held at the Kincumber Youth Centre and involved a number of different activities during the day culminating in art and music activities in the afternoon. The program helped the students to consolidate the work carried out in their PD/HPE classes.

Year 12 SLR Lawn Bowls Excursion

On Friday 30 August, the Year 12 Sport, Lifestyle & Recreation class went to Avoca Bowling Club to learn how to play lawn bowls. All term, the class has been trying different sports that they would not normally get the opportunity to play. As part of this unit, the students have learnt about the rules, tactics and etiquette of lawn bowls, and have spent some time playing carpet bowls at school.

Friday was a perfect day for being on the greens, with the sun shining and clear blue skies. Some of the students had some difficulty adapting to the length of the greens early on, which were a lot longer than the carpet bowls games that they were used to, but by the end of the morning they showing some impressive skills. I am sure after the enjoyable trip, a number of students will be keen to try their hand at bowls again in the future.

Profile of a Year 12 CAPA Student - Lachlan Roberts

I’ve been taking photos for four or more years. I’ve always loved sports photography the most but also take high interest in landscape photography.

I started my photography life with a Nikon f65 35mm film camera taking photos at an aviation festival. This is really where I fell in love with the sports side of photography. The fast and rapid movements and decisions required, really brought out my creativity and I craved for more. I’ve always been a fascinated with the technology in cameras as well as being a Canon fanatic. I was the photographer for Terrigal Sharks Rugby League Club for 2012 but due to Year 12 commitments I was unable to continue with that. Footy is definitely my favourite sport to shoot followed by surfing.

Whenever I go to watch the West Tigers play I would always take my camera equipment with me. I would use any excuse to get the camera out and take photos anytime of the day. Afternoons after school I would head down to the skate park or the beach and just take photos of anything. With photography you should always expect the unexpected.

Landscape photography has always interested me and allows me to use the more artistic side with the camera. Nothing will surpass long exposure photography for me. I would head out to Copa Beach or Macmasters headland on a clear night and just shoot the stars. Not one night has disappointed me, the camera can see so much more than the human eye ever can and what comes out after about a five minute exposure can leave me gobsmacked. I love the beauty that the night holds and I always try to capture and expose that to the best of my best ability.

Photography is what I call an “extreme hobby” to myself but music is really what defines me the best. I’ve been a guitarist for eight years and along the way I’ve picked up a love for drumming, piano, bass which have all inspired my love for electronic music production and sound engineering. Most people would usually call these instruments “noisy” but from an early age I’ve loved synthesizers and the technology used to create this type of music. I’ve been DJ-ing for around four years and have been producing my own material for three. Music not only allows me to escape from reality (even if only for a short time) it also allows me to express myself. I’ve recently been accepted into JMC Music Academy to study for a ‘Bachelor in Music Production and Sound Engineering’ to pursue my love of music . My music teachers are often confused why I chose this. Quote Mr Downy “It’s like a Formula one race car driver riding a pushbike to work”. This always makes me laugh.

The CAPA faculty would like to acknowledge the wonderful photography Lachlan has done for Kincumber High School over his school years and wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.

Mrs McGilvery, HT CAPA

I would also like to take this opportunity to personally thank Lachlan for his time and photographic skills which he gave willingly and on a regular basis to KHS. Over the last six years I have called upon Lachlan to take photos at the school Athletics, Cross Country and Swimming Carnivals, the Evening of Excellence, and Formal Assemblies. Not only did Lachlan take many amazing photos he always answered my requests with a smile on his face. I, too, wish Lachlan all the best and look forward to seeing his photographic and musical talents in the future.

Congratulations! You made it through the Famine!

A huge THANK YOU for all of your efforts over the past weeks and especially on Famine weekend. By ‘giving up’ you have already ensured that many children in Malawi won’t have to - incredible!

The top three students so far are Elana Hagistefanis, Tayla Reynolds, and Libby Payne. Go Girls! Go Year 8! What an amazing effort! These girls raised over $200!

Our region has already raised an amazing $47,000 through online donations for World Vision's development work in Malawi. Our collective impact will be felt by families and children who will no longer have to suffer from daily lack of access to basic needs. THANK YOU for being part of the movement to make poverty history!

The CAPA faculty is looking for a new sink for our much loved and valued darkroom.

Our current darkroom sink is past its use by date and needs to be replaced. I am wondering if anyone in our school community may have double sink in their garage (or you may know of someone, maybe even grandparents, that may have an old sink that is still in good condition) that may be ideal for our replacement sink. We would really appreciate any assistance you may offer with regards to this. Please contact me (Carol McGilvery) at school on 02 4369 1555 if you think you can help.

Water soluble house paint needed………

Do you have any left over paint in your garage from past painting projects??? If so CAPA would love to hear from you. We are embarking on our yearly mural projects and would like to be as environmentally friendly and cost effective as possible. If you have any water soluble house paint of any colour please contact me, Carol McGilvery, on 02 4369 1555.
