Te Rito Gardens March 2011 What a start to the year, amongst the run of natural disasters and financial rollercoaster rides we are still here. Thanks to the parents and supporters who managed to make the classroom usable on the last day before class. Glen Joslin needs special mention here as he spent two Saturday afternoons working on the rotten floors to bring them up to standard (thanks heaps Glen). Te Rito Gardens is once again running its own training programme with a more focused goal. We realize that the international situation will impact on us sooner rather than later and that our work is more important now than ever before. It seems with every hit that the planet takes the least privileged and less able are affected the most. The course this year has been given a huge boost with new tutors Dave Treadwell, Stella Bridge and Ian McLean. We have a fantastic part-time administrator Seema Singh (ably assisted by her husband Asneel). We would also like to welcome Victor our new volunteer to the project. Thanks also to our many volunteer helpers who make things happen at Te Rito Gardens. The most exciting news is the prospect of our new venture “Te Rito Organics”. This com- pany will become the source of income for us as well as the main support mechanism for our training programme. Land is almost leased and progress in the planning stage is under- way. At this time I would like to thank our primary sponsors for their support. They are: Nigel Homan, Mana Community Grants Foundation, The Margret and Winton Bear Charitable trust, Commonsense organics and the Bishop of Wellington fund (providing much needed safety equipment). I have left the most important group until last, the students, who are a wonderful bunch of people. Firstly, they put up with the grumpy old man and most of all have worked really hard to get Te Rito Gardens looking fantastic again. Well done to everyone involved. What a start to the year, amongst the run of natural disasters and financial rollercoaster rides we are still here. Thanks to the parents and supporters who managed to make the classroom usable on the last day before class. Glen Joslin needs special mention here as he spent two Saturday afternoons working on the rotten floors to bring them up to standard (thanks heaps Glen). This year we are really happy to announce the introduction of Te Rito Gar-dens newsletter. We think that this initiative will be a visual medium for in-forming our sponsors, well-wishers, volunteers, students, their families and the community on the monthly events and tasks that are undertaken at the Te Rito Gardens.

If in one word I had to summarize what we intend to do at Te Rito Gardens, it would be promote SUSTAINABILITY. In this anthropogenic induced climate change and pollution of the natural environment scenario we need to educate our societies about sustainable and healthy lifestyles. This course—Horticulture, Level 2 intends to do just that.

Our students are taken very good care of and have shown great initiative in learning about organic gardening . We hope to see this growth continue in fu-ture and we will keep you all informed about the events at Te Rito Gardens through our Te Rito Gardens newsletter. Check this space !!!

Seema Singh (part-time administrator)

Come along We would love to show you around and we would welcome any contribution. We have a few volunteers helping part-time at the garden site. We could use more assistance. If you think that you can spare a few hours of your time at Te Rito Gardens please email us on [email protected], or call us on 238 2960. Send us why you are interested in the project and your phone contact. We will contact you and make an appointment for your visit. Let’s make the Te Rito Gardens goals achievable, in the interest of empowering our community.

To our well-wishers and supporters – thank you for your continuous support. It is much appreciated. We need some more volunteers to do administration work. Give us a ring or email us.

Welcoming new PEOPLE with new IDEAS all the time. Your little time will go a long way….
