Feast CommitteeA Feast Committee has been created to organize community events on New World Grid. It consists entirely of residents, volunteering and motivated. The group is in charge of conceiving and carrying out inworld events. The aim is to forge a social bond between residents while having fun and sharing.

The group members meet occasionally in order to propose ideas for various events such as: games, musical animations, exhibitions ... There is nobody in charge. Decisions are taken unanimously if the project is considered as feasible. The group have, among others, taken part in the organization of the New World Grid anniversary celebration which took place on last February 13.

The Committee is also open for you, and you are welcome to attend if you have any ideas and enthusiasm to share.

New inworld featuresNew quality avatars will be available for new user accounts this month, thanks to a resident who has chosen to remain anonymous.

A mail server has been installed, offering offline residents to receive mails when an instant message is sent to them, and group notifications as well (if the option is checked in the group profile).

We have developed new functionalities to facilitate the management of the land and the simulators that we host.

It is now possible to do back-ups, restorations, rebooting in the absence of the administrators.

Also a translator has been integrated in the public chat based on your language preference at the time of your registration and that can be modified at any time on Welcome. This system has the advantage to be transparent to the user who only receives a translation in its own language in the chat.

A new account creation system will soon be available that can be embedded in third party sites. Communities, associations, and companies will be able to add a choice of personalized avatars for the people joining the world through their site.

Mount Grace Priory Project MOUNT GRACE PRIORYNorth YorkshireEngland

On 4 adjacent regions in New World, we are building Mount Grace and its immediate environment. This is thanks to the generosity of the French Non Profit Organization 'Virtus', which promotes arts and educational projects.

The priory was established in 1398 as part of a wide and thriving European network of Carthusian monasteries famed for their austere style of spritual life, their commitment to the preservation of literature at a time when few people could read, and their hospitality to travellers: an interesting mixture!

It was disestablished in 1539 by agents of King Henry VIII of England, as part of his greed, his jealousy, and his quarrel with Rome.

Project evolution Over the coming months you'll learn how the community lived; how it contributed to life within the region; how it provided hotel and nursing services to travellers; and how life was lived then.

Please go to the Visitor Centre at Mount Grace NE region, walk around and explore: there will be much to see, some of it interactive !

Work on this major project, which is preparing a walk-through, interactive educational experience in a 14th century Carthusian priory, continues. Last month saw two major developments in construction.

First, construction of the first set of buildings (5 monks' residence cells) was finalised by means of a set of detailed site plans and elevations obtained from the National Monuments Record (an archive of all ancient monuments maintained by English Heritage, the government statutory adviser on the historic environment of the UK). While some simplification is necessary if the project is to be completed within a reasonable time-frame, nevetheless, the plans have made accurate simulation to within centimetres possible.

Page 16: Newsletter March 2010

Second, a major issue for accurate representation of real-world objects in all OpenSim environments was identified. Basically, the mesh interval used to represent individual avatars is such, that the default height for avatars when calibrated against the terrain maps used for the environment makes each avatar just under 7 feet, or 2.13 metres, tall!

Moreover, the default camera position is such that there are problems in navigating realistically sized rooms smaller than 10m x 10m in size. (These are problems encountered in Second Life and all the OpenSim grids generally, not simply in New World grid.)

Page 17: Newsletter March 2010

A design decision has been taken to continue to construct all buildings accurately, but to accommodate avatars in two ways.

Offer visitors an Appearance specification that reduces them to an accurate size

Construct one of the buildings, Monk's Cell 8, to a larger scale, placing it on a sky-platform, for the convenience of people who don't wish to reduce avatar size to something smaller than the size they are used to!

Cell 8 is the Real-Life building that has been reconstructed to its original appearance, complete with furnishings, by English Heritage, and so it is very suitable for this purpose.
