Howzit Midlands, I hope that life is treating you all just swimmingly! With Easter just around the corner, don’t pig-out on too much chocolate but do enjoy the egg hunt. Our last rally was held at River Valley Resort in Pennington over the weekend of 23rd – 25th February where we had a smallish turnout of 13 families in attendance including 2 visitors, the Spiekers from Sunshine Coast and Colin Chaplin from Natal Region. Our newest members, Terry and Wendy Watruss, assisted by Maxiene, marshalled for the

weekend and what a sterling job they did. Great fun was had by all especially with the game that was organised for Saturday afternoon – Shelli I didn’t know you were so very, very, very, very competitive!! Congratulations to Grant and Shelli on the acquisition of their van. The voucher winners: Wattrus and Evans families. See elsewhere for the full rally report.

Our next rally is Rally SA at Richards Bay Caravan Park over the Easter weekend of 30th March – 1st April. A lot of organisation from KZN as a province has gone into this rally and I for one am really looking forward to it. It is the first time it has been held in KZN since 1993. There will be in

excess of 200 vans in attendance representing 20 regions of the CCSA, the biggest region being a tour of 40 vans from Easterns. We have 27 members attending and 2 visitors joining us, the one being our ex-chairman Zac Wessels and family who are coming all the way from Good Hope Region. There are a few of our members going on the annual DCAA

The February Regional Rally was held from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th Feb in

Pennington at the most stunning venue, the River Valley Resort. In all there 13 vans

occupied prime position around the centre concrete area on which 3 gazebos were

erected to assist with protection from the elements.

Terry & I were the first to witness the Grant & Shelli Williams styling in their new van

as they drove past on the freeway while smiling & waving like the queen. Upon

arrival, many congratulations & greetings were exchanged around their lovely

acquisition. They were smiling from ear to ear and savoring the comfort after a

disastrously windy Christmas function which saw them breaking camp and scuttling

for cover in the warm chalets.

Friday evening was spent downing a few chilled wines & cold ales while we made

short work of all the delicious bring & share platters. It was a great social evening

and everyone enjoyed the banter while catching up.

Saturday morning was spent at leisure with various people chilling. Maxiene was

taken to the local Crocodile Farm where she was brave enough to come into close

contact to snakes & crocodiles which she thoroughly enjoyed. Others of us headed

out to Rocky Bay for an off-road bike ride through the sugarcane & local forests. The

sunny weather was kind to us making the trip most interesting. Three of us fell

during the ride, no names mentioned but all in all, it was great fun and well worth the

exercise.

The latter part of Saturday afternoon playing a rather raucous fund-raising dice

game called Quarter Pass which got quite exciting and intense. Juliet corrupted us

and ensured much hilarity by mixing up a bright red hooligan juice for any penalties

and as the game wore on the juice was downed faster. The rules were a tad shaky

with me mixing up my left from my right but Shelli eventually emerged as the overall

winner. A great thank you to Maxiene who assisted with marshalling for the weekend

and collected all the money during the game. She did a sterling job of keeping track

of all the penalty money and as requested, Shelli kindly donated her prize of

R230.00 towards the National Rally to be held in Richards Bay in March. Well done

and thank you Shelli. Thankfully Terry Wattrus was knocked out the game early and

attended to the braai fires so that we could all enjoy a fabulous braai before the rain

arrived.

We were grateful that Terry Schefermann accepted the request to be Fines Master.

He managed to conjure up some excellent material on Sunday at Friendlies and

many of us left Pennington much poorer than when we had arrived. Juliet and her

team displayed many of the gifts so generously donated and willingly made by so

many members for the National Rally. A great time was had by all and for my sins, I

was awarded the Ian Robertson Stirrer Spoon by Terry which was a bit like the pot

calling the kettle black but never the less, it was an honour.

Terry and I would like to thank you all for assisting us with our first job as Marshalls.

We appreciate your encouragement and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Warm regards

Terry and Wendy Wattrus

Hello Midlands. Kevin Leonard saw the doctors a week ago and they are pleased with his progress. His next appointment is in April 2018. Kevin is booked for the beginning of June at the Vascular Clinic at Albert Luthuli Hospital for further assessments. Well done Sharon it must be all your TLC treatments.

Jean Siepman had a very nasty fall on 18th February 2018. She broke her upper arm in three places & had to undergo an operation. A week after her horrible fall, Lindley and Jean made a day trip, visiting us at River Valley, on the Saturday. Such a tough lady. Sorry you did not feel well on your birthday the 7th March 2018, however we hope Lindley spoiled you and made the day very special. Jean’s arm is in a sling and the doctors say it is a 6 week healing process. Jean we trust you feel much better and that the pain is much lighter. Johnny Engelbrecht is still battling and was admitted back into hospital with internal bleeding and very weak. He had various tests and scans done and everything appeared normal. The doctors think Johnny was on too many blood thinning tablets. The doctors have now sorted out his medication and hopefully they will find the correct medication for him so that we can have the old Johnny back. Glenda is still battling to get all her strength back after her multiple surgeries. Wally we hope you are also looking after Glenda, with lots of TLC. Please keep Glenda, Jean, Johnny & Kevin in your prayers. We wish all four a speedy recovery and hope you will feel much better and be able to enjoy Rally SA. Sharon Leonard let me know that their daughter Rachelle Smith was admitted to hospital to undergo various tests with her lungs. They found a severe lung infection and her kidney function is below par but not too serious at this stage. Rachelle is home again and under strict bed rest. We hope Rachelle is much better and will keep her in our prayers. Congratulations to Quintus and Giselle van Wyk with baby VW number 2 who is expected in August 2018. Jamie will love a little sister or brother. Mr. Nefdt and Ouma Anita are super excited and over the moon. We wish you all of the best with your pregnancy Giz. Camping with Mr. Nefdt & Ouma all on her own for the whole weekend.

Jamie assisting her Oupa setting up. Beautiful gardens at River Valley

Update on Kevin Leonard. Kevin is doing very well since leaving Albert Luthuli Hospital at the beginning of January 2018. After 2½ months at home the wound is almost closed. As Anita mentioned Kevin returns to Grey’s Hospital in April and in early June back to Albert Luthuli Hospital for hopefully a final operation to prepare the stump for prosthesis. I once again want to thank our Midlands family, my family and friends for all their thoughts and prayers that have carried us through this time. I also need to say a big thank you to Tracey from Rosewood Estate who has been a tremendous help and encouragement to us both. Our eldest grandson Brent Smith, in spite of breaking his arm 36 hours before a school cricket match, attended the game in full cricket gear to support his team and being unable to compete in the school gala because of the broken arm was awarded house captain for the swimming team. Brent was awarded this honour for his dedication not only to the school and his team mates but also because of his leadership qualities that he shows. Congratulations Brent. Granny and Grampa are very proud of you. To Warren and Rachelle Smith for always supporting and encouraging the boys in whatever they do. You guys rock. In 11 days’ time and counting, is Rally SA at Richards Bay and I have never been more excited about a rally than this one. We will be tenting and it is going to be an experience with Kevin in a wheelchair but we are certainly going to make the most of it.

My blast from the past. Rally SA 1993 Midmar. My daughter Rachelle was 1st runner up in the Junior Miss Rally SA.

Cheers for now Sharon

My parting shot:
