EcoAqua June 2016 A few words on EcoAqua The EcoAqua Project is one of the actions of ERA - Chair (European Research Area) programme, aiming to support universities and research organizations to attract and maintain high quality human resources. The objective of EcoAqua, which started in 2014, is to foster excellence research in Sustainable Aquaculture under an Ecosystem Approach, integrating outstanding researchers in the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Canary Islands, Spain. Different aspects of the challenges facing the rich marine realm in EU Overseas were discussed during the scientific sessions and the three Technical Workshops, which took place during the International Conference “Challenges in Environmental Management of Marine and Coastal Areas” at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (25-29 January 2016). 2015: First Summer School

The first EcoAqua Summer School entitled “Ecosystem based approach for the sustainable development of aquaculture” was held at the Marine Scientific & Technological Park (PCTM) of the ULPGC (26-29 Oct 2015) with the following objectives:

Provide participants with an in-depth perception on the state-of-the art and future challenges facing aquaculture s u s t a i n a b l e d e v e l o p m e n t i n d i v e r s e m a r i n e environments.

Offer technical material to facilitate the acquisition of essential knowledge required for the development of sustainable aquaculture under an ecosystem approach.

Provide scientific and technical skills for exchange of know-how and good practices between experts and participants.

2015 Workshop

Between July 13-16, 2015, the EcoAqua Workshop on the “Application of an Ecosystem Approach for development of Sustainable Aquaculture in Europe’s Outermost Regions (OR) and Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT)” was organized at the PCTM of the ULPGC.

The main objectives of this workshop were i) to analyse the status and issues of Aquaculture in ORs and OCTs and ii) to draw guidelines to foster the Development of Sustainable Aquaculture applying an Ecosystem Approach.

The workshop was attended by more than 30 participants; representing different ORs (Spain, Portugal, France) and OCTs (OCT Association and New Caledonia); as well as regional and national authorities, together with representatives of international bodies such as FAO and IUCN.
