ITK Sports for the Disabled participants saw the Final Four of the Wheelchair Basketball Cup (DRS-Pokal) in Wetzlar and the IPC Grand Prix Para Athletics “Berlin Open”. They showcased their skills in wheelchair handball at the “Tag für alle” (“Day for Everyone”) of the SC DHfK and won the third place in the Volleyball tournament of the Leipzig Self-Help Day (“Selbsthilfetag”). Smiles all around vouched for the great atmosphere during the joint sitting volleyball tournament of ITK Sports for the Disabled course, ITK Volleyball course and the sitting volleyball team of the Leipzig

Participants of the ITK Football course had the opportunity to see matches of every level, from teams with young players to international elite events: three Bundesliga matches of FC Carl Zeiss Jena, matches of BSG Chemie, the first victory of first-league club RB Leipzig against FC Bayern Munich and a friendly match between the German and Brazilian national teams. Mr Ulrich Wolter, Director Operations of RB Leipzig, gave them an overview of the history and a tour of the club. The participants were referees at the RB Soccer Cup and the Kid’s Football Festival of the Saxon Football Federation. They also oversaw the technical circuit of the Federal

School Football Cup “Jugend trainiert für Olympia” and organised the first ITK Elementary School Football Tournament in ITK history.

Top-level matches were also on the to-do-and-enjoy-list of ITK Volleyball participants: Apart from enjoying matches of the first FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League and the Bundesliga L.E. Volleys, participants were introduced to the internal structure of the Saxon Volleyball Federation (Sächsischen Sportverbandes Volleyball e.V.). They also acted as referees at the Men’s U20 Saxon Cup, the Cup Final of Saxon Vocational Schools, the U13 Saxon Final of the “Jugend trainiert für Olympia” tournament, matches of all age groups from U12 to U20 at the Sparkassen-Lipsiade

and at the sports festival of the Verbundnetz Gas AG. In addition, the ITK Volleyball team played a training match against the men’s team of SV Reudnitz, the U19 Saxon Selection and ranked 4th at the Saxon Varsity Volleyball Cup (Sächsische Hochschulmeisterschaften). (photos: Petra Riedinger)

Excursions and Projects

The cultural highlight of every semester is a trip of all ITK courses to Germans capital Berlin. The Olympic Stadium, Charlottenburg Palace and the Reichstag building were the top sightseeing destinations. In addition, all ITK courses go on excursions that are relevant for their discipline or have the opportunity to see athletes across all competition classes while actively take part in sporting events. Participants of the ITK Track & Field course had the opportunity to see top athletes in their disciplines: the Hallsche Werfertage and the international Athletics Meeting in Dessau are on top of that list. In addition, they observed athletes at numerous tournaments in Leipzig, among them the Lipsiade and the City Championships (single discipline and combined events).

A trip to the Sportspark Rabenberg, the Olympic Training Center in Oberwiesental and the adjoining ski jumping hills on the Fichtelberg gave ITK Sports Management participants an impression of ideal training conditions for young and elite athletes in winter sports. The visit of a first league Basketball match and a guided tour of the Allianz Arena allowed a sneak-peak in the organisation of high-level sporting events. As part of their studies, participants organised, planned and executed the international sports festival of ITK. (photo: Luana dos Santos)

ITK Cooperations & Partner Organisations

The cooperation of ITK and Saxon sports confederations, Leipzig sports clubs and institutions does not only allow ITK participants to get insights into club structures and competition systems but also gives them the opportunity to put into practice methods acquired in classes, e.g. through shadowing sessions and friendly matches.

We would like give special thanks to all institutions who supported ITK this semester: Behindertensportverein Leipzig, Rehasport Leipzig, Sächsischer Sportverband Volleyball, L.E. Volleys, SV Reudnitz, Deutscher Leichtathletik-Verband, Abteilung Leichtathletik im SC DHfK, SG Motor Gohlis-Nord Leipzig, Landessportbund Sachsen, University of Europe, RB Leipzig, SG Olympia 1896, SG Rotation Leipzig 1950, BSG Chemie, FC Carl Zeiss Jena, Sächsischer Fußball-Verband, Landesamt für Schule und Bildung.

ITK successful at the Deutschen Hochschulmeisterschaft Leichtathletik 2018

On 10 May 2018, the Deutsche Hochschulmeisterschaft Leichtathletik was held in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The DHM is a flagship of German varsity sports. It was for the first time that ITK and German students of Leipzig University participated as a team in the DHM championships. ITK representatives were able to shine: Luziana Tomé da Silva from Brasil became varsity javelin champion, Angie Carolina Hernández Otálvaro from Colombia was placed first in pole vault, Daniel Enrique da Costa Mello (Brasil) ranked 4th in 4x100m relay of men and David Ramirez Santana (Mexico) finished in the 8th place in the 5k race.

“These excellent results were also possible due to the brilliant cooperation of Leipzig University and the Athletics Centre (Leichtathletikzentrum) of the SC DHfK”, emphasises ITK Senior Lecturer Jens Kühnast. Luziana Tomé da Silva was coached in the group of Hans-Peter Köhler, Angie Carolina Hernández Otálvaro was coached by Thomas Bellmann.(photo: José Luis Flores Medina)

BLACKROll Workshop

A semester full of firsts: BLACKROLL held a workshop with and about their foam rollers. For many participants it was the first time they used the device. Steffi Kuhn led the session and introduced them to ways of releasing muscle tension before and after exercise. Every participant had the opportunity to take one of these helpful devices home.
