From the Pastor’s Desk NEWSLETTER Volume 2011, Issue 20 October 26, 2011 ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH What do Reformation Weekend, All Saints Day, Commitment Weekend, and Christ the King Sunday all have in common? You guessed it! They are all taking place at St. John’s in the next few weeks. I once had a church member ask me why we have all these “special weekends.” I told him for the same reason that couples celebrate anniversaries and families celebrate birthdays. They remind us of our story. Take for example Reformation Weekend which takes place on Oct. 29th and 30th. This is a time when we are reminded not just of Martin Luther’s bravery in posting the 95 Theses on the doors of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, but of how he defended the Word of God, that declares, “We are saved by Grace through Faith,” not by our works. Also on Oct. 30th, six of our youth will stand before the congregation and make the same claim as Luther’s, as well as the promise to continue to follow and serve Christ. On November 5th and 6th we celebrate All Saints Day on which we take time to remember the saints and our loved ones who have gone before us with the tolling of the bells. We will also remember them by putting a flower in a vase near the baptismal font to remind us of the promise that we have been given in our baptism that we will see them again one day. On Commitment Weekend, November 12th and 13th, we celebrate all that God has given us through our Time, Talents, Treasures, and Touch. We will pledge to give back to God what He has first given us and continues to give us. On Sunday, November 13th, at the combined 10:30 service, we will have a Polka worship service with a German meal to follow. And finally, we not only get to be reminded of who the King of Kings is, but we get to share that Good News with others on November 19th and 20th as we celebrate Christ the King Sunday. Don’t miss all the celebration weekends this fall at church. Join us for worship and celebration through all these upcoming “special weekends” to be reminded of our story at St. John’s. We hope and pray that during all of these celebrations you are reminded of the Love that God has for you and how through that love He continues to pour out His blessings upon you.

ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH

What do Reformation Weekend, All Saints Day, Commitment Weekend, and Christ the King Sunday all have in common?

We will also remember them by putting a flower in a vase near the baptismal

font to remind us of the promise that we have been given in our baptism that we will see them again one day.

“Through the Church the Song Goes On” – Hymn FestivalFor 25 years, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians has engaged in the work of empowering people to join the song of the Church. It is appropriate that at this moment in our history, we sing about it and give thanks. The hymn festival is structured around a snapshot of what the Church does when it sings: prayer,

praise, proclamation, lament, and tasting the feast to come. This is not an exclusive list of what we do in worship, nor is it necessarily ordered in a systematic theological flow, but it gives us an opportunity to sing the story of who we are as the Church and remember the work we do for building up the Body of Christ. The goal is to ignite the Church with at least 25 experiences of the same hymn festival, to provide opportunity to share stories of ALCM’s accomplishments, and to encourage financial support and partnership to expand scholarship and mentoring programs for our youngest musicians. St. John’s will be hosting one of these hymn festivals on Saturday, October 29 as part of the 5 pm worship service. Dr. Larry Peterson, Director of Music, Instructor of Organ at Augustana Lutheran College will be the featured guest musician at this service. Music by the Chancel Choir, Bells of Glory, and other instrumentalists/vocalists will be a part of this service. A reception will follow the service.

Soup & Song Lunches in AdventMark your calendar for Wednesdays at noon during Advent to have a light lunch and enjoy some music on the following dates, November 30, December 7, 14 & 21. Come and enjoy a soup and dessert luncheon while being entertained by some of our local talent. November 30 – Ed Clark, pianist; December 7 – Riverton High School Madrigal Singers; December 14 – William Zimmer & Sally Fritz & Jean Welch (violin / piano); Jane Hartman Trio. A suggested donation of $5 will help defray the cost. Doors open at noon and the entertainment begins at 12:15 p.m. This is part of St. John’s Concert Series. Invite a friend, invite a neighbor to these luncheons. If you have any questions, please contact Jean Welch at [email protected]. or call 793.3933.

Chancel Choir Christmas Cantata RehearsalsHello, this is Jill Gum, Chancel Choir Director. The Chancel Choir and I have been having a wonderful time getting to know each other and beginning to make some wonderful music together. We still would welcome any new additions (or people who used to sing in the choir in years past!) at our 6:30 p.m. Thursday rehearsals. Starting this coming Sunday, October 2nd, we will begin rehearsing for the annual Christmas Cantata. “Shout the Good News” is a wonderful and exciting cantata that hasn’t been done at St John’s before, and we welcome all to join us from 9:15-10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings between services to rehearse the cantata. We will rehearse October 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 30th- dates for November TBA. The cantata will be presented on Saturday, December 10, 5 p.m. and Sunday, December 11, 8 and 1030 a.m. Please email me at jgum@stjohns-springfield with any questions, and make plans to join us if you are interested!

Fair Trade Advent Fair Coming in DecemberDon’t do your Christmas shopping yet! On December 4th and 5th St. John’s will be hosting a Fair Trade Fair with dozens of beautiful items created by artisans from all over the world.

Half of the people on the planet live on less than $2 a day. On so little income, buying clothes, school supplies or medicine is out of the question. Parents live with a constant pit in their stomachs, worrying whether they can feed their children. And children must work to help support their family rather than going to school.

It’s frustrating how many people struggling this way

actually have the skills to create beautiful items that people would love to buy. They just don’t have the resources to market these items to people who can pay a good price for them.

But SERRV, Lutheran World Relief’s Fair Trade partner, contracts with disadvantaged artisans, pays them a fair price and sells their beautiful creations to you.

And this is where you come in. Through our Fair Trade Fair you can support these artisans when you purchase beautiful hand-made items for those on your Christmas list – or yourself.

And this year we’re going to have a special room for the kids to buy presents for their friends and family. All the items will be reasonably priced and we’ll have special helpers to assist the little ones.

In addition to the large selection of Fair Trade items, we are offering free coffee tasting and will, of course, be selling our usual selection of coffee, tea, chocolate and maybe a few new items. Come and see what you can do to change the world – one life at a time.

For more information, please contact Pat Caley at 670-2700 or [email protected].

Advent Celebration Event!Mark your calendars for an exciting upcoming church-wide event on Sunday, December 4th. Directly following 10:30 worship, join us to enjoy delicious soups, dips, and cookies, which you will also have the opportunity to purchase through our Fair Trade program. We will also have Advent-themed activities and events for everyone to participate in, so we hope you will stay and join in the fun! If any individual, group, or committee is interested

Our St. John’s Growing Deep Daily Devotions help us be good stewards of our time as we daily read a passage from Scripture, share reflections on what that passage means for us today, and join in prayer together.
