DROP OFF AND PICK UP ARRANGEMENTS

– the car park closest to the school is STRICTLY NOT for pick up and drop off – parents are only expected to use this carpark if they are coming into the school. The drop off and pick up area is directly off Koorlong Ave past the school oval and we ask that you use this at all times.

Assistant Principal’s Report

Welcome to Term 1, 2018! We’ve hit the

ground running, with lots of enthusiasm,

new uniforms, bring your own devices

being set up for students, a Xuno

notification app for parents, and

professional practice for staff. On

Australia Day, we also witnessed

Georgia Leutner, ex-school captain of

ISC receive the Young Citizen of the

Year Award at the Irymple

Ceremony. We ask all of our students to

make the most of their opportunities on

offer at ISC, from participation in clubs,

to extension activities, to Drama Club, to

Homework Club, to camps and

excursions – seize your opportunities!

Sports Equipment

We’ve been very

fortunate that our

school signed up to

Rebel Sport last

year and before

school started, I was able to select a

range of basketballs, footballs, soccer

balls, down balls and the like for our

students. Thank you to Rebel Sport and

for families noting ISC as the school to

send their donation to.

Breakfast Club

Breakfast club will be held every

Thursday in the food room from 8am.

Lockers

It’s been great to see a lot of students

having padlocks on their locker. Just a

reminder, to please ensure you have a

padlock, either combination lock or key

(spare key to your form teacher).

Classroom Equipment and Timetable

Students should make sure they all have

a timetable and equipment for their

respective classes. If any families are

experiencing hardship, they should

contact either a member of the

Wellbeing team, Year Level Coordinator

or Assistant Principal.

Getting On Country During week 6 and 7 of term one this year our Indigenous students have the opportunity to participate in a program called “Getting on Country”. The program is designed to build our student’s wellbeing, develop leadership skills, promote cultural identity and connect with elders from our local community. Uncle Mick Kelly, Ben Parker, David Byrnes and Dennis Mitchell will lead the program. Gregor Allan will accompany the group as the staff member from our school. Getting On Country takes place at the Rick Farly Reserve which is near Mungo National Park. For some of our year seven boys, this camp will be an extension of the learning they undertook last year in grade 6. These boys will have the opportunity to share their learning with grade 5 and 6 students and continue their own journeys into Indigenous culture. This year the program is being offered to female students and will be supported by Kellie Peterson and Kath Potter, as well as two other young indigenous girls. Expressions of interest have been collected during student meetings held this week. There will be notes and more information sent home soon. We hope your child can make it. Any questions can be directed to Gregor Allan by ringing the school on 50245407.

Secondary School vaccinations in 2018 The Secondary School Vaccine Program offers free vaccines to Year 7 and 10 students. These vaccines provide protection against:

Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) – one dose for year 7 students

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – two doses for year 7 students

Meningococcal A,C,W,Y – one dose for year 10 students

Parents/guardians of year 7 and 10 students should look out for the vaccine consent card booklet coming home from school with your child. You need to read the information, complete and return the card regardless of whether your child is being vaccinated at school.

The Mildura Rural City Council immunisation service may contact you about the Secondary School Vaccine Program. Schools are authorised to provide basic parent/guardian contact details to local councils for this purpose. Contact the school by 28 February 2018 if you do not want your contact details given to the MRCC immunisation service.

To learn more about the Secondary School Vaccine Program, the vaccines, the diseases they protect against, or how you can prepare your child for vaccination, go to betterhealth.vic.gov.au

Additionally, the Commonwealth government is funding vaccinations for all children under 20 years who missed scheduled vaccines. If students have missed vaccines, either in childhood or adolescence, and require catch-up vaccines, they should speak with their immunisation provider. (ie. local council or GP).

Welcome to 2018, especially to parents and students of Year 7 (and new students in other Year levels). Those who were at our awards night would remember that Middleton won the overall House Champion trophy. Congratulations again to Middleton House. Let’s see if they can defend their title in 2018 or will it be one of the other Houses that takes the title this year. Congratulations also to our individual Age Group Sporting Champions who were duly recognized at the awards night as well.

All students at Irymple Secondary College have the opportunity to be rewarded for excellence in the sporting field through our end of year awards system. Each age group, ie. 13 Yrs, 14 Yrs, 15 Yrs and 16 Yrs, has a boy and girl age group champion as well as an overall boys and girls champion for the school. These sports champions are decided on a points system that rewards students for participation as well as success at each level of competition (both in individual and team sports). The points system used is outlined below. So for those athletic minded students why not give it a go and try out for your age group champion this year!

INTER-HOUSE SPORTS CARNIVALS

SWIMMING SPORTS

Our Inter-House Swimming Sports will be held at the Irymple Pool on Tuesday 20th February from 9:45am – 3:00pm. This is a fun filled day with plenty of atmosphere and colour. All immediate families of current students are most welcome and encouraged to attend and enjoy the day. Spectators will be treated to some fantastic swimming as well as the informative, witty and sometimes lurid tongue of Mr Bill Sauer on the microphone. (This is always a highlight of the day). Don’t miss it!

PAGE 5 Educating For Success

Note that this is a normal school day which all students are expected to attend. Following completion of the sports, students will remain at the pool to enjoy some free time. Attached is a detailed information sheet explaining the expectations for the day. All students will have the opportunity to put their names down for swimming events at the first House Meeting which will be held next week. All year levels have been completing trials to identify potential representatives for their Houses. House Captains will use these results to help determine their house representatives for the sports. Students will find out who will represent their House at the second House meeting prior to the swimming sports. The Interschool (SSVS) Swimming sports will be a day meeting to be held at Mildura Waves on Friday 2nd March. The team for this competition will be chosen from winners and place getters in the inter-house sports. Winners of events will continue progressing through to compete at the LMR level on Thursday 22nd March and if successful, at State level (SSV) on Wednesday 18th April.

CROSS-COUNTRY and ATHLETICS Our Inter-House Cross-Country Carnival will be held towards the end of May, while no date has been set for the Inter-House Athletics Carnival. We will inform parents of the confirmed dates when we can.

INTERSCHOOL SPORTING COMPETITIONS/SIGN-UP DAYS: There are a number of Interschool sporting competitions on offer throughout the year. Any student has the opportunity to try-out for these teams, with competitions being in Junior (Yr 7/8) and Intermediate (Yr 9/10) boys and girls sections. Those who sign-up will be invited to trials and training where team representatives will be decided by the appointed coach. These competitions will occur on scheduled school days. If students wish to try out for any of the sports this semester, they are required to attend one of the sign up days which will be held during two lunchtimes in the next two weeks. This information, including the sign-up sessions will be advertised on the bulletin. If students do not attend one of these sign up days they will not be allowed to try out. If however, students do not get their name down and they wish to try-out for one or more of these sports and they had a legitimate reason for not attending the sign-up days eg. absence on both of these days, they can see Mr Morrish to plead their case! The inter-school sporting competitions this term occur in the last week of term. These sports are; Boys and Girls Tennis together with Boys and Girls Volley Ball on Monday 26th March and Boys Baseball together with Girls Softball on Wednesday 28th March. The inter-school sporting competitions for term 2 are; Boys Soccer (and Boys and Girls Golf) on Monday 30th April, Girls Soccer on Friday 4th May, Girls Football on Mon 21st May, Cross-Country on Wednesday 23rd May, and Girls Netball on Monday 4th June. The Boys and Girls Hockey is scheduled for Thursday 14th June but may be changed due

PAGE 6 Educating For Success

to a clash with the Mildura Eisteddfod (again, we will keep parents informed via the newsletter). The inter-school sporting competitions for term 3 are: Boys Football and Boys/Girls Badminton on Tuesday 31th July and Athletics on Wednesday 12th September. The inter-school sporting competitions for term 4 are Boys and Girls Basketball and Table-Tennis on Tuesday 16th October and Boys and Girls Cricket on Tuesday 30th October. Sign up days for semester 2 sports will occur towards the end of term 2. Please note that sports/teams may not be entered if there is insufficient staff and/or student interest or if sufficient training has taken place. Also parents and students need to be aware that individuals and teams in some sports may not be entered at Loddon Mallee Region level even if they qualify and/or win through at interschool level depending on circumstances as decided by the college. These students and teams will be advised as circumstances arise. Finally, it would be great if parents/guardians are available to assist in any way with the sports program. All you need is a current Volunteers Working With Children Check. If you haven’t got one they are easily organized online or you can contact the college office for assistance. If you are willing and able to assist with any part of the schools sport program, or have any queries about the sport program, please get in touch with me at the college at any time. Let’s have a great year in sport. Steve Morrish Sport Co-ordinator

Term 1 PE Program Active Participation in Physical Education classes is a compulsory requirement of the Government and also necessary for your child’s wellbeing. Students need to participate in all practical tasks to the best of their ability. Students who are ill or injured will be expected to provide a signed note written by parents or guardian explaining the reason for non-participation. Parent contact details will need to be included on the note. Students with illness or injury can often participate in a modified way and should bring a change of clothes, with their note. Long term conditions should be supported with a medical certificate that details dates of non-participation and, if possible, what activities can or cannot be undertaken by the student. If non-participation becomes a problem parents will be contacted by the subject teacher. At the start of each PE lesson, all students are to hand in their valuables and electronic devices to their teacher. These will be locked away for safekeeping. No student, changed or unchanged, is to have electronic devices during the lesson. No responsibility will be taken by the teacher or the school for valuables that are not handed in to the teacher. During Term 1, all year levels will be participating in a swimming program at the Irymple Swimming Pool. If the pool is unavailable, your child’s class will be notified the day before to bring alternative clothing (PE uniform). Please don’t hesitate to contact myself or your child’s PE teacher if you have any questions or concerns. Regards, Michelle Beswisk (Health/PE Coordinator)

PERFORMANCE

A number of our students will be performing at the Mildura Arts Centre this weekend with ELT. This show highlights a variety of music, drama and dance items. The company employs performing arts students to produce, direct and perform. Come and support our young people this weekend 9th, 10th and 11th. Tickets are for sale at the Mildura Arts Centre door.

SRC ELECTIONS – Your school needs you!

Want to be part of making ISC a great school? Nominate for

SRC. In the next couple of weeks students will be asked to nominate and vote for their form’s SRC rep. The Student Representative Council (SRC) is an important committee in the school community and is the place where students can have their say and influence issues important to them. Last year our SRC worked on initiates that lead to: increased student participation in PE

reduced litter in our yard,

the introduction of a new student event - the ISC

Colour Run

Our SRC organises fundraising events to improve student resources and to help our community, both at a local level (OASIS Aged Care and the Salvation Army) and international level (the SRC sponsors a child in Timor-Leste). Being a rep is a great experience and position of responsibility within the school. The council meets weekly with the School Captains to plan and run its events and discuss issues of importance to the student community, often bringing feedback from their peers so that students have a real say in our school. Look out for further information about nominating and voting in the next couple of weeks and see Mrs McClure or Mr Matheson if you have any questions.

LATE ARRIVALS & EARLY DEPARTURES A reminder to parents/guardians that students arriving late or leaving early

from school require a written note or a phone call to the office approving

this sign in or sign out.

When students sign in/out you will receive an automated text message

from our portal system Xuno, however parental approval is still required in

order to mark this as an approved late arrival or early departure.

This is to ensure our duty of care is adhered to and also maintain student

attendance records and without a note or phone call these occurrences

are marked as an unapproved absence.
