Troop 52 Celebrates 100 Years at All Saints! Centennial Scout Sunday ~ February 3, 2013

We are a family of God. A parish family.

People who love Jesus and one another.

The Holy Spirit has done great things among us for many decades.

The Holy Spirit has prospered and united us most specially and mightily in 2012.

Now, we stand at the crossroads of decision:

Rest in this good place? Or, go forward in faith?

Should we rest in our current prosperity? Or will we use it to do greater things for our Lord? The answer will be found in our hearts and in the purity of our love and sacrifices for Jesus. The answer will be found in what we are will-ing to give Him of ourselves.

The Apostle Paul was a man of biblically his-toric and heroic efforts for God. His “accomplishments” in faith are beyond any-thing any of us has done. Yet, after all that, he still was compelled to write:

I have not yet reached my goal, and I am not perfect.

But Christ has taken hold of me. So I keep on run-

ning and struggling to take hold of the prize. My

friends, I don’t feel that I have already arrived. But I

forget what is behind, and I struggle for what is

ahead. I run toward the goal, so that I can win the

prize of being called to heaven. This is the prize that

God offers because of what Christ Jesus has done. Phil. 3:12-14

A NOTICE OF ACTION, FAITH AND DISCERNMENT

On Sunday, May 19, All Saints Church will hold its Annual Parish Meeting in the Great Hall at 12:30pm. It will be a relatively historic meeting because the Vestry will present a Strategic Plan for our near future. The plan is intended to be an articulation of God’s direc-tion and will for this wonderful church.

The plan will be built upon the Spirit inspired visions, thinking and prayers placed in the hearts and minds of our parishioners – the disciples of Jesus in this place.

WE ARE AT A CROSSROADS – and crucial decisions in the Lord need to be made. The next few months will see our parish immersed in the discernment and planning process.

A PARTIAL INVENTORY OF OUR 2012-13 MINISTRY AND WORK

A great city cannot be built without infrastruc-ture. First, its planners, engineers and con-struction crews must provide water, sewer, drainage, electricity, gas, communications, roads and much more. Likewise, when a great church is to be built, its infrastructure must be first installed.

By Peggy Eastman All Saints Poet-in-Residence

Burdened by our mortality, we Your unworthy creatures kneel before You, Lord, offering up our unruly hearts. Far from constant are they in love of You, much as we would wish them to be. But we have nothing else to offer.

Ashes to ashes.

Mark us, Lord, and let this ashen cross be a sign of all You would burn out of us, all that mars, sullies and stains. What is ash but fire’s grave? How our transgressions have grieved You we know too well; consign them to the grave, Lord, we pray.

Ashes to ashes.

Like frail reeds that sway with every wayward wind, we have not stood firmly before You; we beg Your gracious clemency. We have not been good and faithful servants; we have neglected Your vineyard and its vines are sickly and deformed. Help us hold to Your will and ever do what will be pleasing in Your sight.

Ashes to ashes.

Let all who see these ashes bear witness to our deep desire for pardon long after the ashen mark has left our faces. Let us remember how we knelt in penitence before You, longing to begin the inward labor of prayer and denial of self that would draw us closer to You. Let us remember how we shouldered the burden of our mortality anew, seeking courage to live as people wholly secure in Your succor.

Ashes to ashes, grave to new life.

At the Crossroads (Cont’d from front page)

2012 saw the implementation of large amounts of infrastructure to enable us to grow our church. Now that the infrastruc-ture is being installed, we are at the cross-roads of decision. Will we use it and

grow? Or, will we stay where we are and

bask in it all?

The Gospels teach that Jesus went up on the mountain of Transfiguration with Peter, James and John. There Jesus’ clothing became dazzling white as He met and spoke with Moses and Elijah. Peter awoke from his sleep and saw this magnificent

heavenly scene and probably thought:

Let’s just stay here! This is as good as

anything could ever be.

But he was wrongheaded to be so content in his setting when so many others needed Jesus off the mountain. Luke reports it this

way:

Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for

us to be here! Let us make three shelters,

one for you, one for Moses, and one for

Elijah.

In other words, Peter was saying, let’s just stay where we are, this is great! But Luke stings Peter for such thinking and writes: Peter did not know what he was talking

about. Luke 9:33

A very brief overview of relatively “new” parish developments (which doesn’t in-clude many long-standing ministries that are doing powerful and devoted work for the Lord) includes the establishment of the following ministries which, in part, collec-tively demonstrate the “crossroads” at

which we now find ourselves.

Parish Finance Committee: Vestry Mem-ber/Treasurer, Ann Batlle (along with Nancy Wilkinson, Beau Garverick and our Accountant Nancy Harris) have imple-mented incredible management improve-

ments and controls.

Building & Grounds Committee: Led by Junior Warden, Robbie Boone, in partner-ship with our Facilities Mgr. Bill Garner, this committee will oversee the future well-

ness of our nearly 100 year old building!

Stewardship Committee: Under the lead-ership of Eleanor Nading and Stuart McFarland, we’re launching a new para-digm for congregational giving to the Lord with a year-round discipleship and ministry program with the goal of permanently transforming our culture of giving at All

Saints to a biblical standard and identity.

Insurance Committee: Parishioner Dick West is overseeing a complete inventory of our insurance coverages, an assessment of the fairness of the premiums we pay, the identification of gaps and overlaps in our coverages, and a system for ongoing

evaluation and insurance management.

Audit Committee: Parishioner Dan Dever has helped the Rector lay the groundwork for outstanding methods and procedures in

our auditing and management operations.

Parish Personnel System: Parishioner Katharine Beckman, a human resources/personnel professional for many years, is advising and directing our effort to estab-lish proper and professional personnel man-

agement policies and systems.

Other newly established ministries and ini-tiatives include our Men’s Fellowship Ministry … Women’s Bible Study Groups on Thursday Morning and Monday Nights … Parish Wide Prayer Chain Network … Parish Librarian Ministry … Parish Web

Site … and Audio Visual Committee!

STRATEGIC PLANNING INITIATIVE

Do we know where our church is going into the future? Be very careful how you live

— not as unwise but as wise, making the

most of every opportunity. Eph. 5:15–16

Parishioner Stuart McFarland is leading our Strategic Planning Committee. The goal is to discern and envision, through prayer and scripture, where our Lord is leading our parish and then to do in obedience what He directs us to do. Wise and godly planning and strategy are necessary to reach such vision and goals. This committee will con-tinue to engage the parish to gain every-one’s input and thinking. We encourage

your prayers for our Strategic Planning!

God bless you all Fr. Ed Kelaher, Rector

What if God called you to give beyond your comfort level? You'd probably

feel somewhat afraid.

Would you dismiss the calling as irra-tional and irresponsible — or would you take advantage of the harvest op-portunity for which God had explicitly

prospered you in the first place?

If we believe that God owns every-thing, including the comings and go-ings of our finances then we have noth-

ing to fear and no reason not to give.

Giving money to God's work is not a loss. It's an investment with a very high return rate, and what is given can never

be taken away.

The money we give God will survive eco-nomic downturns. It is the most secure investment we will

ever make.

Financial giving aligns your life with God's agenda. Good

stewards are like a successful restau-

rant. They result in repeat business.

If we are generous with the resources God gives us — then He will continue

to use us for His glory.

The crowning achievement of over-coming the fear of giving is the moment you begin to experience the

joy of giving!

What will you do with your handful of seed? God has given each of us the opportunity to partner with him in the greatest work of all: kingdom work. As stewards of his resources, we have a choice. We can sow the seed or we can lock it away out of fear.

What is Stewardship? It’s NOT about Money!

As of February 11, we’ve received 156 pledges for 2013 totaling $710,251. That includes 18 new pledges and 59 increased pledges from 2012! Thank you to those who have made their faith commitment and helping us build toward our $1,960,702 budget goal this year.

If you have not yet made your annual pledge, will you please take time today or this week to prayerfully consider your giving to All Saints this year — and then, either fill out and return the form below, or go online to make your pledge there (directions are below).

Stewardship is about getting our hearts centered on Jesus, putting our complete trust in Him, and in faith doing one of the most difficult things in life — offering our hard earned money back to God. Jesus gave His all for us, so why do we feel content giving any less? Biblical generosity is a journey, not a destination. It may be an uncomfortable and difficult message for many to keep hearing, but it will be an incredibly rewarding journey for those who choose to listen and follow! God bless you in your discernment!

As Christians, we’ve been entrusted with a stewardship: the things we call our own are not really ours, but God's.

We have no possessions. We don’t even own ourselves. Because we are His servants all that we have is His.

According to Scripture, we are accountable to God for every-thing. Whether we have much or little, our key responsibility

as His stewards remains the same — faithfulness.

Give generously to him and do so without

a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord

your God will bless you in all your work and in

everything you put your hand to. Deuteronomy 15:10
