Newsletter April 2016

On Saturday April 9 we’ll be presenting ‘singin’ in the rain!’. This concert will be quite different from our usual presentation, but full of as much fun and wonderful sing-ing as ever.

The first half of the concert will feature the Junior Choir performing Monster Stomp, Come Closer and some wonderful Canadian folksongs - is there anyone not completely charmed by Wade Hemsworth’s Log Driv-er’s Waltz? The teen and adult choirs will

perform a beautiful arrangement of Gordon Lightfoot’s haunting Song for a Winter’s Night, Seasons of Love from Rent, Sarah Maclachlan’s Angel and an unforgettable medley of selections from Les Misérables, a perennial favourite with singers and audiences alike.

The second half of the night will feature the children’s choir performing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat! This wonderful through-sung cantata has been performed in King-ston numerous times over the past 20 or so years, but there have been very few opportunities to enjoy it in its original format. Jo-seph was first presented as a 30-minute pop cantata in London in 1968 and was recorded as a concept album in 1969. After the suc-cess of the next Lloyd Webber and Rice piece, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph received stage productions beginning in 1970 and ex-panded recordings in 1971 and 1972. The musical was produced in the West End in 1973, recorded in 1974 and opened on Broad-way in 1982. Several major revivals and a 1999 straight-to-video film, starring Donny Osmond, followed.

Our concert version has been directed by Brett Christopher, Artistic Producer for Theatre King-ston, who has been a professional theatre artist working across the country since 2001. Celebrated as both a professional actor and director, Brett has worked with a variety of theatre companies includ-ing: Canadian Stage, Stratford Festival, Arts Club (Vancouver), Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Segal Theatre (Montreal), Thousand Islands Playhouse, Magnus Theatre, Sunshine Festival, Port Hope Festi-val, Actors Repertory Company, and Convergence Theatre. He and the children have been having a blast working on telling this musical story, and our

audiences are in for a treat! We are hoping to set up the stage for the concert on Sunday April 3 at 2:30. Volunteers make the job quick and easy and will be most welcome! Tickets are selling fast - if you don’t have yours, get them soon! Many thanks to our concert sponsors at Secker Ross and Perry.
