The end of the year is drawing close and it has been a wonderful year on the Umina Campus. Year 9 have just graduated in a very moving ceremony run by Kieran Lawler and Susie Murray. We wish them every suc-cess in their future endeavours and know that they have enjoyed their time on the middle school campus. The new year sees some staffing changes with the departure of some long serving staff members, including Dianne Gill (Librarian), David Charles (TAS), Lisa Connolly (Support Unit), and Pamela Thomson (Learning and Support). These teachers have been long serving members of staff who have worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for the students of the peninsula and the surrounding areas. The new year will also see the introduction of new staff including Lucy Burns from Peak Hill Central School (Head Teacher Teaching and Learning), Paul Richardson from Henry Kendall High School (TAS), Linda Jacobson from the Woy Woy Cam-pus (Support Unit) and Morrie Goolagaong (Aboriginal Education Ofiicer) from George Anderson Walpole school. They are very excited about their arrival and are looking forward to 2015. This week has also seen the permanent appointment of Kylie Hocking as a PDHPE/ Dance teacher at the Umina Campus. Kylie has demonstrated herself as a hard working staff member who has seen national suc-cess with our students in Aerobics and Cheerleading. She has also been heavily involved in CAPA activities and has been organising sporting events for the PDHPE Faculty. Congratulations Kylie on your appointment. 2014 has been a wonderful year, with students attaining a range of sporting, cultural, academic and extracur-ricular success. We are incredibly proud of all our students in the College and are looking forward to an excit-ing year next year. I would like to also take this opportunity to thank the amazing staff of the Umina Campus. Their dedication and hard work is demonstrated every day and I admire their energy and passion for the students of our school. It’s been another great year in public education and I would like to thank parents and caregivers for their support of the school throughout the year. The school is undergoing a new planning cycle and I welcome advice in 2015 on how to make our great school even better. It is a privilege to care for and educate other people’s children and I know our staff put so much effort into inspiring and engaging students to learn. I hope everyone has a lovely break at Christmas, spending time with family and friends. Merry Christmas and happy holidays and I look forward to seeing you in 2015. Brent walker Principal

Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza 2014

In October 18 students and 6 steers from Brisbane Water Secondary College attended the 2014 Upper

Hunter Beef Bonanza held in Scone NSW. Our students Maintained a high level of showmanship and

obtained excellent results despite working in temperatures above 35oC.

Schools and breeders represented many areas across NSW with over 300 head of cattle and more than

800 students participated in the event. In a very strong Field BWSC in partnership with Flemington Limous-

ins won Reserve Champion and another 5th place in the Heavyweight class.

Students also participated in the junior paraders, junior judging and Inter-schools meat judging competi-tions. Special congratulations to Jack Gowrie on coming 2nd in the 14’s and 15’s age paraders competition and to Allana Norris, Katharine Charles, Jake Barrett, and Nick Clunes on their first place award in the teams retail cuts meat judging event.

Junior Parading competition

This concludes a highly successful show season for

BWSC. We entered nine shows achieving champions

and numerous placing’s with cattle, junior judging and

parading throughout the year.

Young cattle have now arrived to commence

preparations for 2015. Students are excited about

commencing training for the coming year.

BWSC would like to acknowledge the generous support from breeders, Umina and Woy Woy Rotary clubs,

Parents and Citizens Association and private sponsors who have enabled the school to provide students

with a balanced and comprehensive agricultural education. They have also been instrumental in providing

opportunities for our students to learn, not only excellent skills in cattle training and preparation, but team

work, accountability, responsibility and work ethic. This continues to provide a solid platform for many

graduates to enter successful agricultural tertiary training and employment over the years. These students

would otherwise never encounter the diversity of the agricultural opportunities available in Australia.

The Agriculture Department would like to thank Hicks Hay and Grain for their sponsorship of feed as prize

money won at the Maitland Agriculture Show this year.

The school farm has enjoyed an interactive and dynamic year. Record numbers of Kindergarten students

from regional schools have engaged in the School Farm excursions. Visits from Year 5 and 6 students

have also been very successful.

Cattle, pigs, sheep, poultry and horticulture have provided interesting and diverse learning opportunities for

the whole college throughout 2014.

The year concludes with an incursion for all participating

Cattle Club members. Mr and Mrs Cole, nationally ac-

claimed judge and breeders from Forbes are conducting a

training day on Cattle and Pig judging combined with ca-

reer opportunities in Agriculture. The Agriculture Depart-

ment would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mr and

Mrs Cole for their long standing commitment to mentoring

students toward successful futures in Agriculture.

SRC – Term 4 Dance Party

The SRC of 2014 have been busy again this term hosting an array of events for our school and the local community, one of which was our last Dance Party for the year.

This was the last chance for the Year 9 students of 2014 to put on their dancing

shoes and dance the night away and that is exactly what they did.

The Dance Party theme was Hawaiian and although we had strict dress code regulations for the night, we still had a turn out of approximately 130 students. The theme saw a number of great costumes with some of our best dressed including: The very popular Lilo & Stitch and the pineapple girls. We also saw an abundance of bright, flowery Hawaiian shirts in combination with

Hawaiian lei’s and sarongs.

This term the year 9 students created their own mix of songs that were played on the night and this kept the dance floor full for the majority of the night. The students thoroughly enjoyed the night and were calling for encores from our new DJ. The SRC would like thank everyone for coming and can’t wait

for the first Dance Party for 2015

Interact Club – ‘Breakfast Club’

This year the BWSC Interact Club has been busy working on their first school-based project-‘The Breakfast Club’. Every Wednesday morning students of the club have been collaboratively working with members of the Rotary Club to provide food for students who do not get the chance to eat in the morning before school for vari-

ous reasons.

At the end of the term instead of just providing students with toast, juice and cereal early Wednesday morning, the students of the BWSC Interact Club put on a BBQ breakfast for all students willing to pay a small fee. All hands were on deck this

morning with the ignition of two barbeques and ovens used in the kitchen rooms. The smell of Bacon & Eggs rolls along with hash browns lingered down Veron Road all morning and it attracted huge crowds

from 7:45 onwards.

The Students of the Interact Club would like to thank all who came along to the BBQ on the Wednesday morning and we hope that you were well fed before a busy day of school. They would also like to thank the members of the Rotary Club and the teachers who as-

sisted in the preparation of the food.

The Interact Club looks forward to continuing to provide students with a healthy breakfast early Wednesday mornings next year. They would also like you to keep your eyes peeled for our International

based project in the year 2015.

SRC – 2015

On Tuesday the 18th of November the elections for School Captains and the School Representative Com-mittee (SRC) for 2015 were held. This year we had a huge number of students who nominated for these

leadership roles and it was great to see so many students keen to be involved in the school community.

The speeches for the Captains positions this year were not only impressive, but inspiring. We had 19 stu-dents speak in front of the whole of Year 8 and explain why they would be the perfect candidates for the

position. Each student spoke clearly and incisively to persuade the audience to vote for them.

After collating the votes our School Captains for 2015 are:

A massive congratulations to these four students and we look forward to working with all of them in the new year, as they will do great things for both the school and the commu-nity. I would also like to congratulate those students who nominated themselves for a captain position but were not successful. There are a number of other leader-

ship roles within our school that require your skills which you would be perfect candidates for.

Not only were the Captains speeches impressive, but so were the large number of students who nomi-nated themselves for SRC. We had 14 students nominated for Year 10 SRC, 39 students nominated for Year 9 SRC and 45 students nominated for Year 8 SRC. With the number of students growing exponen-

tially each year we would like to take all of these keen students, but unfortunately our numbers are limited.

Our amazing musicians made us proud in a stunning perform-

ance at Lizottes, Central Coast. This marks the end of an era as

the venue is due to close it's doors in the near future. Lizottes

has been an avid supporter of BWSC performers with students

showcasing their talents year after year at the iconic restaurant.

What an eventful last few weeks we have had. Students worked hard in class to perfect their resumes and cover letters for the Mock Interviews. The Mock Interviews were held in week 8 and were a huge success. It was wonderful to see the students taking

this very useful event seriously and with pride. Many boys arrived in suits and ties whilst the ladies looked stunning. The panelists this year found it very difficult to nominate only 2 top students on each day and we ended up exceeding the number of nominations for excellence in presentation and effort. A big congratulations to those students. Five students were then nominated from this list and are the lucky recipeints of a $20 gift voucher. Congratulations goes to; Miguel Acevedo-Moreno, Jayda Bryant, Wil Hudson, Grace Robertson and Logan Wardrop. Central Coast Group Training also sponsor us for this event and Steven Sarayeldin received this award along with a $50 Westfield Gift Voucher, well done Steven. We had representatives from local businesses including KFC Woy Woy who have selected several of our students for interview and possible employment I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many students who helped out on the days. Many students made coffees, prepared the lunches and waited on our guest panel members; Naomi Hayes, Kayla Ding-wall Logan Wardrop, Jayda Bryant, Justine Murchie, Taylor Kennedy. Madalyn Wing, Emily Northcott, Teah Berghofer, Lashe’ King, and Monique Kenyon just to name a few. I also had several other students offering to help on the days. It was great to have the support and interest from these students. A huge thank you must go to Mrs. Cindy Phillips from our kitchens who worked alongside the students during food preparation, Cheryl Goodsell and her students, Janelle Beckinsale who managed the interviews on the day, Di Arnold and Faye Gordon..... and our wonderful ex staff, community members, Planit Youth mentors, local businesses, Rotarians etc who came along and volunteered their time. Tax File Application Changes As of December 31, 2014, students will not be able to apply for a tax file number through the school. The new process will involve on line submission and a visit to the local post office. Notes have been sent out to all of our students who are 13yrs and over and if you have been able to com-plete the forms and return them by Friday December 12th, they will be posted off for processing before these changes occur. Please be aware that: i) these forms take 4 weeks to process and your child's tax file number will be posted to you Ii) if the forms are not filled in correctly they risk being returned and will not be able to be re-submitted by the cut off date. If you have not sent the necessary forms in, you will have to apply using the new method in the new year.

I would like to introduce myself, my name is Mrs Lucy Burns and I am the new Head Teacher Teaching

and Learning at BWSC Umina Campus. I am so very excited to be here and to work in such a wonderful

school with brilliant staff and of course the best students on the Central Coast! I would like to thank Ms

Dominique McMahon for her hard work and efforts in her role as the Team 8 leader prior to my appoint-

ment and also Mr Kieran Lawler our ATL for his hard work throughout the year and for making me feel so

welcome.

A bit about me… I have moved here from Dubbo in the Central West of NSW. I am a Food Technology/

Hospitality teacher and I absolutely love what I do. I am passionate about my subject area and can’t wait

to get cooking with the students this term and next year. I will be working closely with the staff in working

together to improve student learning and engagement across the school.

The end of term is fast approaching and Christmas is just around the corner! I would like to remind all Team 8 students that we will be working hard right up until the last day of school. I am very proud to be the Team 8 team leader and look forward to working with the staff and students next year to continue achieving excellence. I would like to wish all staff, students, parents and community members a merry Christmas and a safe holiday break!

Farewell 9.4.1! Our Year 9’s will be leaving us to go

over to the senior campus next year. They have recently had their mock

interviews and brushed up quite well. We wish you all well in your future

studies and hope you don’t forget our awesome Team 4!

in the last week of school. Well done to these students who have proven they are RESPECFTUL,

COMMITTED and have great RELATIONSHIPS with our staff and peers at BWSC. As part of PBL we are

CAPA CLASSES – A huge congratulations to our CAPA Kids who have been

involved in some amazing achievements recently:

Our incredible cast in the Wizard of Oz. Our lead characters, our dancers and the behind the

scenes crew all made up parts of this musical. It really was THE BEST musical BSWC has ever

seen. HUGE effort from all staff and students involved. It WOWED the pant off our audience!

All our fabulous performers who have are performing in the end of year concert. We are so proud of

you all to have the bravery to do this.

Central Coast Summer Chess Challenge 2015

Date: Monday, 19th January 2015 at Erina Fair Shopping Centre, The Hub Youth Entertainment Venue

Cost: $20 per player

Time: 9am Registration 9:30am Round 1 begins 12:30pm Lunch break 3pm Prize giving

There are short breaks between the rounds. Children need to bring their own lunch.

Format: This tournament is an individual and not a team event and restricted to players under 18

years of age. The tournament is a 7-round ‘Swiss’ competition. This means that all players play 7 games

and no-one is ‘knocked out’ of the tournament. The time limit is 15 minutes per player per game. This tour-

nament will be JCL rated.

Prizes: Trophies will be given for: 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, 4th Place, 5th Place, and Girls Prize

Age performance trophies awarded to the following age groups: 12 Years and under Prize, 10 Years and

under Prize, 8 Years and under Prize, 6 Years and under Prize All participants receive a certificate of partici-

pation.

Entries close: Thursday 15th January, 2015. The late entry fee is $30 if paid on the day.

TAFE COURSES There are Courses on offer next year for adults who have either been out of the workforce for some time and need some assistance in reentering the workforce or for people who are thinking about a career change. The courses run from 9:30-1pm 4 days a week, Mon-Thursday in 2015. These courses offer practical skills that are necessary for workplaces and also include career guidance and assistance. These courses do include the First Aid Certificate. These courses are delivered from Wyong TAFE. Enrolments for 2015 are on Wednesday 21st January at 10am in NG1 Please contact Bronwyn for the all ladies course on 4350 2375 or Kathryn 43502 335 for the Mature Aged Men and Ladies course or the Early School Leaver’s course.
