Dear Parents and Carers

Last night we held our first Key Stage 5 consultation event for students and parents. Many thanks to all of you who attended. The discussions were incredibly useful in helping us with our planning for the sixth form and we will

feed back to you shortly via the newsletter.

On Sunday around 20 INA students were rewarded for all their hard work and commitment to the Big Band project by the amazing opportunity to attend a workshop with a professional saxophonist and the Artistic Director at the world-famous Jazz Club, Ronnie Scotts! Not only did they benefit from her teaching and guidance in the practice session, but they then got to perform as the show opener in the evening on the main stage of the club in front of a packed house of jazz lovers. The band played three tunes that comprised of Splankly, Ain't Nobody and C Jam Blues, a piece in which they learned on the day! This was an awesome experience. I think the staff and parents who attended were as excited as the students, and I know that we will remember the occasion for many years to come. Well done to all the performers: you made us very proud. And huge thanks to Ms Morten, MR Coughlin and Mr Robinson.

I look forward to seeing some of you tonight at the school’s first Creative Writing Awards. Mr Abrantes has introduced the initiative, encouraging staff and students from the primary and secondary schools to put pen to paper under the inspiration of the theme “Light and Dark”. The result is an amazing anthology of poems and creative writing, illustrated with some drawings and photos.

Congratulations to the students who are having their writing published and many thanks to Mr Abrantes.

Year 9 students attended a taster session for computer science on Tuesday 5th January 2016; the event was, quoting one attendee, “fun and challenging”. Students had the opportunity

to program in command line, model software behaviour and learn about the computer architecture. The taster successfully exposed students to the types of course material that will

be studied at GCSE, enabling them to make an informed decision for their GCSE options. Below are some more quotes from the students who attended:

• “I think the computer science lesson taught me what computer science basically is.”

• “I think it was good and I am going to take the subject.”• “I think the taster lesson was useful and productive.”• “I think the taster lesson was useful as it helped me to understand

computer science.”• “I found this fun and a nice challenge.”• “I think the taster session was very useful and

• “I think the lesson was interesting and intellectual, and it gave us an insight into the

January GCSE Computing Taster

DebtorsAt Isaac Newton we aim to enrich the lives and experiences of our students, and to inspire them, by providing a wide range of learning opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom. Such enrichment activities might include extra-curricular clubs, sports events and fixtures, cultural visits, music and theatre performances, adventure activities, educational conferences, and subject-related educational visits and competitions. A number of these are free of charge, some are fully chargeable and some require voluntary contributions from families. Some activities may not go ahead if insufficient contributions are received.

We also believe that we have a role to play in educating students in healthy eating to support learning and ensuring a balanced diet. We therefore operate a family dining service whereby school meals are compulsory and parents are charged for meals automatically unless their child is not in school or we have been notified that they are fasting.

As you are aware, all schools are facing significant budget cuts. In order to successfully continue the fantastic enrichment opportunities and family dining service, it is really important that families pay for their child’s school meals, chargeable activities and contributions to enrichment activities on time in order to avoid debts building up and unnecessary staff time taken in chasing those debts.

We have, unfortunately, experienced a small number of parents/carers who continuously fail to make payments despite being chased on a number of occasions. We are, therefore, about to take our first family to the small claims court in order to recover the monies owed. This is not something that the Academy wants to do but we are unable to continue to allow such debts to accumulate. It is also unfair to families who pay in a timely manner for school meals and activities who are effectively subsidising those who don’t.

We would ask, therefore, that parents/carers ensure that their child’s wisepay account is regularly topped up to pay for their school meal charged at £2.10 daily (unless entitled to free school meals) and any breakfast or breaktime snacks. We would also ask that parents/carers pay for other activities in a timely manner in order to avoid the activity not going ahead at all and unnecessary staff time chasing payments which could otherwise be used on teaching and learning activities.

PE AT ISAAC NEWTON ACADEMYNews & ResultsYear 7/8 Girls Handball team

The Year 7/8 Handball team had their qualifying game against All Saints Catholic School after becoming Redbridge champions last month. All Saints represented nationally for Handball last year so INA knew they were in for a tough match. All Saints started the game the brighter of the teams, taking a 4-1 lead early on in the half. INA slowly worked their way into the game, collaborating really well with each other and finishing the half 5-4 down. Spirits were high thanks to the comeback and INA started the 2nd half how they finished the first. With 5 minutes to go the score was now 6-5 to All Saints. The character and determination shown by all the students to come back from the deficit was incredible and unfortunately the team was hit with an injury to one of the players which mentally affected the rest of the team. The final score was 10-6. The girls represented INA superbly and all gave 100%. Well done girls!.

Year 7 Netball v Oaks Park

The Year 7 netball team played Oaks Park in their first netball fixture since having a long break over the Winter holiday. The Year 7 team had the benefit of watching the Year 9 match prior to their fixture. They observed a very high level of netball, played by both Year 9 sides. This was very valuable in helping to develop the 7’s knowledge, understanding and performance of netball in a competition game situation. The Year 7 team were apprehensive before playing after watching such an impressive performance from a Year 9 Oaks Park side, a lot of them playing at what was clearly a County level. After the first quarter, the INA Year 7 team were 2-1 down but managed to battle hard to take a share of the points and draw the match 4-4. Well done to all of the netball team, including Sidran Jabeen who put on a great performance in her first game for the squad.

Year 7 Basketball vs Loxford

The Year 7 Basketball team made it 3 wins in 4 games with an impressive 22 – 16 win against Loxford in a local derby game. The game started off very scrappy with both teams giving the ball away cheaply. However, INA had a great 2nd quarter which took them into a

16-0 lead. Great Basketball from Jack Lavin, Shomail Abbas and Jaheim Chambers saw the boys go in with a substantial lead at half term. However Loxford came back well, putting 12 points on the board in the 3rd quarter, setting up a tense finish in the 4th quarter. It was a fast paced final quarter which saw an end to end game. However, INA held out for their 3rd league win of the season.

Year 9 Netball Vs Mayfield

The Year 9 Netball team played a strong game away at Mayfield on Monday 19th Jan. Aniqa stole the first goal of the match for INA which was shortly followed by a strong come back from Mayfield in the second quarter. INA’s attack remained strong, with fantastic vision from Inaya and shots form Aniqa and Zainab, but we could not withhold the Mayfield GS. Yewande contributed massively to the strength of both defence and attack by playing in different positions throughout the game. Player of the match: Ishani - Final score: Mayfield 9, INA 5.

Year 7 Joga Bonito (Play Beautiful) 4v4 Football Tournament

As part of the school and PE department’s Girls Can initiative, the Year 7 student council team will be organising and running a year 7 4v4 football tournament to take place throughout this term on Mondays after school on the Primary Muga. Each form will be expected to enter at least 1 team and the team must include at least 3 girls. The team must have 5 players in the squad in total. The Girls Can initiative is aimed at trying to encourage more girls to take part in sport and physical activity and our Joga Bonito football tournament will be a great way of showing off the footballing talents of the Year 7 girls. Results for the overall winners of the tournament will be announced later in the term, with each member of the squad being awarded a sporting prize. Good luck to all players and Joga Bonito, Play Beautiful.

Girls Can!

This is a brand new initiative for Isaac Newton Academy, looking to raise participation levels of females in sport.

This will run every Tuesday at the start of lunch and we will have special guest teachers from around the school each week to help raise awareness, acting as positive role models. With a different sport each week, this is aimed at having fun and increasing numbers of girls in sport. Come and try something different with your friends.

Cycling RevolutionAttached to this newsletter is a letter outlining the cycle confident training sessions we are running, through Cycle Confident Ltd, at Isaac Newton Academy over the February half term break, together with a bikeability and bike maintenance course running on 2 Saturdays in March.

These are fantastic opportunities for your son or daughter to gain confidence in their cycling skills. We will be giving the students more information about these sessions during their assembly next week. If your son/daughter would like to attend any of these sessions, can you please complete attachment (or your son/daughter can collect a letter from me) and return it to the Key Stage 3 reception by Friday 29th January.

Year 9 Progress meetings Y9 Progress meeting are calendared for Wednesday 27th January 2016 from 2:30-6:30 All students will complete lessons p1 – 4a (Y10 students will complete lesson 4a as per KS3 timings) P4a will finish for all students at 1:05 Students will return to tutor groups from 1:05-1:15 Students who are eligible for Free School Meals who request lunch in advance (via form tutors) can collect a lunch bag from the KS3 desk area as they leave Tutors will escort students to the KS3 gate at 1:15 where students are expected to go directly home and return between 2:30-6:30 with parents Students are expected to attend with an adult family member in full school uniform The progress meeting will take place in the KS3 Hall The last appointment is 6:25 for a 6:30 finish If you have any questions please contact Mr Crowther-Green 02089116666 Years 7, 8 and 10 Students will receive independent learning from their timetabled lessons for p5 and 6

How we build learning power and develop character at Isaac Newton Academy

“We build too many walls and not enough bridges.” Isaac Newton

The secondary BRIDGES programme commences on Monday 14th September. BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a student's character and learning power and enable them to grow into well rounded individuals and resilient learners.

On a two weekly cycle throughout the year, Year 7 and 8 students are introduced to one or two new habits of mind or learning characteristics that will permeate throughout the curriculum. This will take place through a range of interactive activities. In addition, the students will experience BRIDGES learning objectives in each and every lesson throughout Isaac Newton Academy. Year 9 BRIDGES lessons will focus on strengthening certain BRIDGES learning characteristics through exploration of PHSE topics and themes.

Each fortnight you will find top tips in the newsletter of ways of supporting your child to develop the BRIDGES habits of mind and learning characteristics within the home.

At Isaac Newton Academy every student is set the target of 100% attendance. We know that attendance has a direct link to progress, and would urge you to really consider if a day off school is necessary.
