This world class regeneration of a famous landmark synonymous with Queensland’s social heritage and culture represents a historic planning milestone for Brisbane. The project will transform the RNA’s 22 hectares, located 1.6 kilometres from the CBD, into a vibrant year round destination. For the RNA and Lend Lease, this once in a lifetime collaboration signals an opportunity to build a legacy for future generations to enjoy by ensuring the Ekka remains at its rightful birthplace while giving the RNA Showgrounds the facelift it richly deserves. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - CONSTRUCTIONStage one of the $2.9 billion RNA Showgrounds regeneration is set to commence in March/April 2011 with enabling infrastructure works and construction of the RNA’s new $59 million convention and exhibition centre. Due to these works, there will be minimal impact on local traffic as a result of partial road closures and diversions for local residents and business owners.

THE TRANSFORMATION BEGINS ON THE NEW $59 MILLION RNA SHOWGROUNDS CONVENTION AND EXHIBITION CENTRE SIGNIFICANCEThe Industrial Pavilion was built in 1937 and is the largest building within the RNA site. It plays an important role in housing year round functions including, but not limited to, the iconic showbag pavilion during the annual Ekka. During construction of the convention and exhibition centre showbags will be housed in a temporary building during the Ekka, before being scheduled to return to the new centre in 2012.
BACKGROUNDThe Industrial Pavilion’s current design limits its use and ability to be a multi-use facility and needs to be rebuilt into a new multi-level, multi-use convention and exhibition building. The new facility will house a variety of exhibitions and events on a year round basis, including banquets, conferences, exhibitions and seminars.
The new RNA convention and exhibition centre will increase the total fl oor space from approximately 12,000m2 to 22,000m2. The new centre will be used to house extra events and shows throughout the year, as well as showbags during the Ekka.
The new convention and exhibition centre will include two separate levels, which will accommodate the following:
Ground Level
A new car park which will ultimately accommodate approximately 280 cars
Entry lobby/ foyer providing access from Ekka Plaza
Repair and workshop areas to support the operations of the facility
Level 1
Main exhibition hall
Meeting rooms
Board rooms
The RNA’s new offi ce
Inhouse catering facilities.
TIME FRAME Construction on the RNA’s $59 million convention and exhibition centre is scheduled to start in March/April 2011 and is scheduled to open in 2013.
INITIAL INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS INCLUDE The removal of: Frank Nicklin Building,
Building No. 4, Frank Robertson Building, Building No. 6 and Building No. 27A, to make way for new culverts and future development works.
The start of sewer systems upgrades across the site.
A stormwater system upgrade consisting of three new precast culverts (2.7m x 2.7m) installed side by side, from the junction of Costin/Constance Streets and Water Street through the site to Alexandria Street.
The relocation of a high voltage substation from within the site to under the Exhibition Building to facilitate the stormwater and sewer upgrades.
The new infrastructure will improve the capacity of the stormwater and sewer systems which are currently at their limit and allow for further expansion of the area.
TIMEFRAME Construction is scheduled to start in March/April 2011 and be completed in mid 2012.
INITIAL INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS DUE TO COMMENCEThe RNA Showgrounds existing infrastructure can no longer service the needs of a growing city. The stormwater system was installed nearly 130 years ago and cannot cope with the demand placed upon it. The works aim to improve the fl ow and retention capacity of both the stormwater and sewer systems running through the site, specifi cally located between the junction of Costin/Constance Streets and Water Street to Alexandria Street, Bowen Hills.
After seven years of planning, construction on the world class $2.9 billion 15 year regeneration project is scheduled to start in March/April 2011.
Stage one of this exciting project includes a major upgrade of the Industrial Pavilion transforming it into a world class $59 million convention and exhibition centre.
Most importantly, the regeneration has secured the Royal Queensland Show’s (Ekka) location at the RNA Showgrounds, making Brisbane the only Royal Show in Australia to maintain its country and city links by holding the show right here at its original inner city location.
It also means the Ekka’s history, traditions and unique atmosphere will be preserved by upgrading and replacing venues to provide state of the art facilities.
Preparations for Queensland’s largest event – the 2011 Ekka – began in earnest last September with the RNA ensuring the planned construction works offer as little disruption as possible to Queensland’s beloved show.
The RNA is thrilled to run the Ekka on behalf of the community and we encourage all our competitors, exhibitors and patrons to come on this journey with the RNA as these vital regeneration works symbolise the start of a legacy we can all be proud of.
THE SHOW WILL GO ON, AND ON, AND ON...
THE ANNUAL ROYAL QUEENSLAND SHOW WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE THROUGHOUT ALL REGENERATION CONSTRUCTION WORKS.
