SPRING IS HERE!

Well, at least it was last week. Of course as much as we look forward to leaving winter behind, there IS spring house cleaning! The nurses of MSAD #40 would like to encourage you to remember to clean out your medicine cabinet. This includes medications that are outdated or discontinued, whether they are prescription or over the counter products. Sunscreen has an expiration date and also needs to be replaced in order to be effective. Medications are not safe to be discarded in landfills, but rather disposed of by dropping them off at either the Waldoboro Police Department, Route 1 in Waldoboro or the Knox County Sherriff’s Department, located at 327 Park Street in Rockland. Just one more step in keeping our families safe!

Lorraine Lash, RN Linda Jacoby, RN Shelby Gammon, RN FITNESS KICKBOXING Come join us for a fun way to exercise, improve your overall health and fitness level. Fitness Kickboxing is held at the Thompson Community Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 6:45. All skill levels welcome. For more information please contact the Thompson Community Center at 975-0352 or [email protected]. CALLING ANY INTERESTED FAMILIES! I’m sure you’ve heard about the increasing concerns with childhood obesity. As the District School Nurse for RSU 40/MSAD 40, I’m all too aware of the concerns with children that attend our schools. Presently, as I weigh and measure our youngsters I find that between 35% and 40% of our children are either at risk for obesity, or are already obese. This puts our children at risk for many health problems-for now and in their futures. Talking to families about this issue is difficult since it can (but shouldn’t be!) such an emotional issue. And there are no easy answers except the fact that it takes a child’s whole community to support a healthy lifestyle and weight. I think I have some ideas!!!! I’d like to invite any concerned parent to contact me at the Union School @ 785-4330 or email me @ [email protected] to discuss the Union School adopting the 5-2-1-0 approach to this very important issue. I so hope to hear from you soon! Linda Jacoby, RN
