THIS past week saw Mars in Librasquare Pluto in Capricorn and op-pose Uranus in Aries It looked so

ominous that I put big black arrows nextto the listings in my weekly Almanac

I am so distressed that astrologers canforesee death and disaster that I dedicatedmy Ephemeris to those who would be killedby the planetary positions given in its pages

Early Friday morning a man namedJames Holmes fired into a theater in Den-ver It was showing the new Batman filmDark Knight Rises The first reports oftrouble came at 1239 am MDT which willdo for a time Many recent movies have beenloud violent and obnoxious but the soundof actual gunfire in a theater is an order ofmagnitude louder mdash and sharper mdash thanwhat comes out of hi-fi speakers A one ortwo minute delay between the start of firingand the first phone call to the police is trivialThe chart is on page 4 You will note theMars-Uranus-Pluto T-square to be in cadenthouses Cardinal planets cadent houses Iwant to see something mdash like the T-squaremdash tightly conjunct the angles but this didnot happen

When there is nothing angular there isan old New York trick Add the 8 Tran-sneptunians See where they land But ofthe eight none were angular and only Kro-nos turned up in a significant position 7Cancer opposite Pluto and making the T-square into a cardinal Grand Cross In theRules book Pluto-Kronos is defined as De-velopment of ability or skill Testing AsKronos-Pluto are square to Mars-UranusMars and Uranus will function as midpointsPlutoKronos=Mars Autocratic Activi-ties are watched by secret police PlutoKronos=Uranus Sudden but ineffective de-crees and enactments I could go further butthis is not promising Unless you want tomake Mr Holmes into another pointless con-spiracy plot the Transneptunians in thiscase are of no use

OUR first point of delineation is totake the chart as representing thetheater as a whole with the T-

square being Holmes the shooter Violentcardinal planets in cadent houses showdeadly force (cardinal) unleased upon a help-less (cadent) crowd Cardinal planets ca-

dent houses Also note that Uranus in Ariesand Mars in Libra are both in interceptedsigns which means they were not groundedand as a result were acting out

You will spot Pluto in the 9th tightly trineto the Taurus ascendant This is highly sig-nificant but does not indicate violent deathStablemates Uranus is semi-sextile the ascen-dant while Mars is inconjunct Jupiter issemi-sextile the ascendant sextile Uranustrine Mars and inconjunct Pluto which is tosay Jupiter made everything larger than it wouldhave been Its true role comes up in a bit

Cinema mdash I checked Bills mdash is 5th houseas it is a form of entertainment (I wanted tomake it 9th and tie it in with Pluto but as theshowing was not broadcast nationally whichis ninth and as the film was domestic theDark Knight Rises must remain 5th house)

The 5th house has Leo on the cusp Youwill note Sun and Moon are in mutual recep-tion as the rulers of the 4th and 5th houseMutual receptions smoosh the houses (notsigns) together In this case 4th and 5thhouses This was presumably a local theaterwith a local following People felt ldquoat homerdquo(4th) being entertained there (5th) On theother hand as the 4th also rules the End ofthe Matter for at least a dozen people DarkKnight Rising would be the last movie theywould ever see The fourth house is thetwelfth from the fifth

The Moon and Mercury are not in the 5thbut in front of it in front of the 5th housecusp which I would normally interpret notas being entertained but as wanting to be en-tertained Ominously Mercury is both in frontof the cusp as well as debilitated (in Leo) andretrograde which is to say that he doesnrsquot wantto go there (retrograde) but canrsquot quite figureout why (debilitated)

Note that Mercury is sextile to and rulesover Jupiter in Gemini and we get the im-pression that Mercury wants to tell Jupitersomething but canrsquot quite put his finger onexactly what The Moon is tightly conjunctMercury The Moon is instinct gut feelingwhich she is trying to convey to Mercury butMercury is too addled to figure out what it isHow many times have you set off to do some-thing that ended badly blithely ignoring thelittle voice in the back of your head

SOMETIMES we are all at sea to ac-count in a chart for certain inclina-tions exhibited by the one whose na-

tivity it is say our own for instance Tohave an inclination or leaning toward a spe-cial interest is to have a ldquobentrdquo in that di-rection which we recognize in ourselves andwant to follow in our work

The dictionary gives many definitions forsuch an inclination that we know we havesuch as tendency preference disposition-to-ward or personal ldquoslantrdquo The astrologer canmake good use of them in delineating anynativersquos characteristics more completely

FROM the standpoint of general vi-tality the fire signs are reckoned thestrongest although Sagittarius is li-

But not to worry Moon-Mercury are intrine to Uranus The eveningrsquos entertainmentwill be exciting Moon-Mercury are in sex-tile to Mars There will be plenty of actionBut in our enthusiasm we donrsquot see Pluto in-conjunct Pluto is in our blind spot sneak-ing up from the side Pluto is the focal pointof a Moon-MercuryJupiter-VenusPluto yodthe most unique and powerful yod I have everseen

The yod is our second overall ldquopicturerdquoThe first was the Mars-Uranus-Pluto T-square Yod and T-square both have Pluto astheir apex point The yod has the chart rulerVenus as one of its components

There is a third picture Neptune in Pi-sces is exactly square the nodes in Sagittariusand Gemini Neptune is at the north bend-ing of the north node Kathy Allan says aplanet at the north bending is at its maximumoutput Neptune at that point in the 11thhouse shows maximum confusion in thecrowd

The rulers of the nodes are Jupiter andMercury which I find in sextile Allan saysthe nodal rulers are often emphasized in thechart and often for no apparent reasonWhich is the case here or so it seems Jupi-ter debilitated in Gemini in the second houseconjunct the south node money spent on anaspect of communication (Gemini) waswasted Jupiter was wanting to be in Sagit-tarius and the 8th house where we find thenorth node which it rules that many deathswould result

Overall I was not happy with this chartIt lacks a clear ldquotrigger aspectrdquo (which inthis case is a very bad term) some single mdashangular mdash factor that says Yes this was thetime and place nothing else could have hap-pened Numerous glancing aspects to theascendant are unsatisfactory Saturnrsquos squareto the MCIC axis is not sufficient by itselfto trigger events

While I have no doubt that one of youwill know some exotic formula that will pre-cisely time this event charts like this are oth-erwise a reason why astrologers will neverquite be able to predict with success I couldforecast a bad week but could not see Fri-day As astrologers we will always be vic-tims of events we will always have betterhindsight than foresight

I COME now to the shooterrsquos chartJames Egan Holmes was born on De-cember 13 1987 in San Diego Time

of birth is not known and very likely willnever be known Back when she was aliveand ran Data News Lois Rodden routinely

and proudly produced birth-certificate timescreating a ldquoRodden Ratingrdquo system for birth-time accuracy

Alas this system was built around hernetwork of statehouse contacts and wasunique to her I sometimes think we shouldabandon her system as without her contactsit is in fact difficult to get birth times and Ihave seen sorry to say several instances ofcheating

A news report had this description of theshooter

[He] was a smart quiet first-yearstudent in a highly competitive gradu-ate program former classmates said

ldquoHe was a lonerrdquo said a classmateof Holmesrsquo in the neuroscience pro-gram at the University of ColoradoDenver Anschutz Medical Campus inAurora who requested anonymityldquoHe was quietrdquo

Holmes 24 graduated with honorsfrom University of California-River-side with a degree in neuroscience inspring 2010 He enrolled in the Uni-versity of Colorado in June 2011 andwas ldquoin the process of withdrawingrdquoat the time of the shooting accordingto a university spokeswoman Holmesgraduated in 2006 from Westview HighSchool in San Diego

Brian Martinez Holmesrsquo chemistrylab partner at Westview recalled thathe was a talented student ldquoHersquos a

smart kidrdquo Martinez said ldquoHe wasgreat at chemistryrdquo

Martinez said Holmes seemed to bea normal teenager ldquoI never figuredhersquod do anything like thisrdquo

Students in the University of Colo-rado graduate neuroscience programare ldquohighly motivated and typicallyhave very strong credentials for admis-sionrdquo according to a school websiteThe program is ldquovery competitiverdquoHolmesrsquo university classmate saidThis is very banal and very typical The

quiet highly intelligent loner from suburbiawho without warning one day acts out andkills himself andor a lot of others take yourpick This type has been known and studiedsince at least the early 1960rsquos There was afamous poem about such a man

I INITIALLY set the chart for noon asnoon is the ldquoaveragerdquo for the day I wasdistressed to see the stellium in Sagit-

tarius The Sun in Sag with so many hopesmoving to a conjunction with Saturn whichwould kill them all Saturn moving into con-junction with Uranus which is an explosivepile of nerves On the other side of the Suna debilitated Mercury in Sag that wants tobelieve everything and question nothing

I then went on to the Moon which I foundto be in square to the Sun both in mutablesigns (Virgo-Sag) Sun-Moon in square isan aspect of fundamental stress Your emo-tions are never satisfied in Virgo the details

are never right You look to the Sun for guid-ance but all he can give you is useless happytalk as that is all Sagittarius knows

Moon moving into a conjunction with thesouth node the Moon has learned that if itacts out on its own that things will not goright that the effort will be wasted As itgets no guidance from the Sun it is frustrated

You will note the disastrously tight Mars-Pluto conjunction in Scorpio Mars sneakycrafty cruel will dominate and will strikewithout warning It will use Pluto for its in-tensity and evil ingenuity

To sum up our noon-based chart has sofar given us an explosive Saturn-Uranusconjunction a weak and insecure Moon anda murderous Mars-Pluto conjunction JamesHolmes was a bomb waiting to go off

I COULD just stop here it would beenough but this quiet mousy sort whokeeps to himself annoys me Thatrsquos a

12th house MoonThe sort who goes along and studies hard

and is eternally in the background thatrsquos acadent house type The world is not under hiscontrol all he can do is go along with it

Since Holmesrsquo chart presents us with apowerful square we might as well amuseourselves and set his Sun in one cadent houseand Moon in another Since wersquove alreadyspeculated on a 12th house Moon we willstart there

Moon in 12 puts Sun in 3 Sun in 3 is amore or less 1 am birth Et voilagrave a chart

Mercury-Sun-Saturn-Uranus all in Sag inthe 3rd this will be a very bright man Sagin the third Enthusiasm for learning Espe-cially abstract things like neuroscience andchemistry (Never anything practical) Onewho would be very competitive and eager todo well and get into top schools especiallycollege as Sag has a natural affinity withhigher learning

Mercuryrsquos rulership of the Moon meansthe Moon will drive Mercury on to get thedetails right even though James will be theonly one who will ever see them the Moonbeing remotely located in the 12th The re-ports I have read which are still preliminary(as I write this not even 48 hours have elapsedsince the shooting) say that he had little ifany presence on the internet and seems tohave left no manifesto behind Which witha 12th house Moon is what I would expect

Could we have seen this man comingCould he have been found and stopped Pre-suming I am correct in placing his Moon inthe 12th no No one ever sees a 12th houseMoon mdash nor a 12th house Mars for thatmatter The only exceptions are those who

have their Moon exact to the degree of hisand such people are very rare

There does not seem to be a motivewhich indicates the Moon was wrappedtightly into itself while its ruler Mercury inexpansive Sagittarius but in its ldquoownrdquo housedid not see the need to write anything downor perhaps was actually empty-headed Re-ports are that he had dyed his hair red (Sunin a fire sign the ruler Jupiter in anotherfire sign of course) and was ldquoplay actingrdquoas the Joker one of the villains in the Bat-man pantheon Which shows a seriouslyaddled mind

Mars-Pluto conjunct in Scorpio in the 2ndhouse are powerful possessions that ldquostingrdquolike a Scorpion Guns and explosives Asfar as explosives go at least some of themwill be home-made as Holmes studied chem-istry As Mars rules Scorpio as Pluto en-hances it as there are no other planets in thesign and no serious aspects to them Holmesrsquodesire to possess weapons (2nd house) wouldnot be opposedThe DynamicsRemember that I produced a timed chart

merely by speculating a 12th house MoonDeath You will note the 8th house of

the event has Sagittarius on the cusp Theshooter has a stellium in Sagittarius Sagit-tarius he came from far away (California)but in the third house was living nearby atthe time

Death You will note my proposed time

for Holmes puts Taurus on his 8th house cuspTaurus was the rising sign for the event

Timing You will note my proposed rec-tification results in an ascendantMC that arenearly precisely square You will note thecurrent Mars-Uranus-Pluto T-square to beexactly on Holmesrsquo ascendant 4th and 7thhouses

Holmes fires the gun Mars on his as-cendant

He fires at many others Uranus theplanet of the collective on his 7th oppositeReports are that he shot people trying to fleeAries the sign of impulsive panicked indi-viduals trying to save their lives

Death ensues Pluto on the cusp of the4th the final outcome

I regret that I cannot make a big dealabout the Mars-Uranus-Pluto T-square hit-ting Holmesrsquo angles because I produced thoseangles out of thin air but otherwise the out-standing astrological event of the year missedhis chart his person entirely and we lack allmotive whatever If I have his angles more-or-less right then the outside world as awhole (the T-square on the angles) suddenlyganged up on Holmes setting off his explo-sive nature

Note what I have done I am proposingthat the planets are internal and personalwhile the angles are exterior and beyond ourcontrol Including the ascendant

At the time of the shooting Venus wasexactly opposite Holmesrsquo Mercury Hand
