Prayer Requests: Heather and Maria: seeking non-believers
who attended our Spring Break trip
Summer Opportunities: Many students
will be using their break to go on summer
projects to learn about life and evangel-
ism outside their Christian bubble.
Next Year: our team is constantly chang-
ing, we will be losing a few of our staffmembers but hopefully gaining student
leaders and possibly more staff for next
year. Pray for a healthy and smooth tran-
sition
Spring Break in NYCSpring Break in NYCSpring Break in NYCSpring Break in NYCFirst impressions can go a long way.
Not just of individuals but also ofsituations and places. Our first impres-
sions of our service trip to New YorkCity were less than satisfactory. Forty
five students carrying a weeks worthof luggage wandering through the
streets aimlessly, trying to make it onto subways and busses left us annoyed
as Im sure it left the many New-Yorkers we encountered. Praise the
Lord it wasnt raining. Due to manythings that were outside of our control
make a difference for
Gods glory right wherewe are in Charlottes-
ville. We had challeng-ing discussions about
why its easy to serve
soup to a homeless manfrom behind a table butwhen faced with a beg-
gar on the subway weare speechless.
How can we simply givea dollar when we hold
the greatest treasure ofChrists love and for-
giveness? Their physicalneed is obvious but their
spiritual needs are not.We continue to grapple
with these realities and Ihope that you would
take a second to thinkabout this reality in your
own lives as well.Thank you for your part-
nership and prayers thatmake these trips possi-
ble. Pictures on next page.
we ended up arriving at our
destination two hours laterthan planned. Whatever
bonding and learning activ-ity we had planned for that
night was quickly tossed
for relaxing social time. Many of us leaders wereworried the morale of the
group on day one wouldnegatively effect the stu-
dents attitudes throughoutthe week but we were
pleasantly surprised. Wesplit into four groups of
eleven and managed toserve eight different or-
ganizations giving 645hours community service.
In the process of servingwe also challenged students
on the worldview and per-spectives of those less
privileged than they are.Our goal was not to log in
do-gooder hours but togrow in maturity as believ-
ers and learn how we can

ing room at social services, building shelves

weekend of canoeing, camping
and climbing for our students we
find out that only three will be at-
tending. The purpose of the trip
was to build community, depth ofrelationships and grow as a group.
Considering less than half of the
group would be there we had to
make a decision about what to do.
In Lifelines we often do All-or-
Nothing programs, saying that
the group has to decide and either
everyone agrees or no one goes.
We decided that this trip was one
of those times. The purpose andgroup dynamic would change,
and not for the better, if only
three went and we wanted the en-
tire group to feel how their deci-
sions effect the other members.
Instead of throwing it all out we
as a staff team went on our first
team bonding trip. It gave us the
chance to practice what wepreach and deepen our relation-
ships and build community. It was
An incredible weekend. At one
point it started to rain
and all six of us
crammed into a three-
man tent for three hours.
We talked about our in-
terpersonal needs, con-
flicts with our team andhow to serve and love
one another better in the
future. It is seldom that
our focus is taken off our
student ministry and
placed on our own lives
and yet its so important
to be emotionally healthy
ourselves in order to
have and run a healthyministry.
When working with
students one must al-
ways stay flexible. Al-
ways. After many
weeks of planning a
