The evening started in our school hall where prospective parents and students enjoyed hearing from our school leaders and students before touring the school. It was fantastic to see the work put in by everyone to make sure visitors saw the best we have to offer. Our visitors commented on the student friendly atmosphere and were impressed by both our facilities and the honest and informative interactions had with staff and students. We know that last Tuesday was a wet, cold day and it would have been nice to have had a greater turnout. We are still providing information tours for new enrolments, so if anyone knows of a family that missed out on attending our evening, please ask them to contact the school as we would love to arrange a tour any time over the coming weeks. MOUNTAIN TO MOUTH—ART WALKS This weekend 9th and 10th May the biennial walk from the You Yangs to the mouth of the Barwon River will take place. Mr Honeywell will be part of the stage from the Barwon River (Bob Morrell Reserve - Barwon Rowing Precinct) to Leopold (Christies Road) on Saturday morning if any community members wish to have an early morning walk with him.(6.30am to 9.30am). YEAR 7 SOCCER PROGRAM Our Wellbeing team is continually striving to support Year 7 students to have an ongoing smooth transition into their secondary school life. During Term 1, some volunteer Youth Workers from Gateways Community Church, Moolap ran a Lunchtime Soccer Competition for our new Year 7 students. This year the students chose to have a boys versus girls challenge but given that only 2 girls were interested in playing - the competition came down to separating all the boys! Students learnt new skills in soccer, as well as getting to know some new students from other classes. Additionally students began making a connection with the Gateways Leaders. We thank Gateways for continuing to support students at Newcomb Secondary College. Chiara Ercoli Student Wellbeing

THE “HAPPINESS CYCLE” —THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE Following on from the “Happiness Cycle” event held at the Barwon Valley Activity Centre in early February, “Bicycling Network” offered us in excess of 30 bikes to hold our own mini event at school when they learned of the significant focus we have on bikes and bike riding. The “Happiness Cycle” is a major fitness initiative by the “Bicycling Network” and Coca Cola to promote teenagers to be more active through riding a bike. To participate, students needed to register their interest, make a pledge regarding their intention to ride regularly, download an App to track their own activity against friends and other participants, then attend a workshop day where they would assemble a bike, collect a helmet, lock and lights, and ride off into the sunset – All for Free!! So, on Thursday, 27th of March, we held our Mini event. With Denis from the Bicycling Network making a presentation and leading the way, our gymnasium was converted into a bike mechanics workshop and bike testing ground! It was really pleasing to see our students get their hands dirty and work through the bike assembly process with the help of a number of our very experienced On 2 Wheels students. The end result, a hugely successful morning with just on 30 very happy Newcomb students now the proud owners of a “Happiness Cycle”! Mr Unmack

Computer Provision at Newcomb Secondary College

At Newcomb Secondary College we believe it is essential to provide our students with opportunities to achieve their

best educational outcomes. Studies have shown that having access to up to date computer equipment that can be

used both at school and at home can greatly improve student outcomes. We have negotiated a special deal with Dell

to supply computers through a parent purchase plan supported by an optional three year accidental damage and

repair service. This ongoing support has proven very valuable in our current netbook program and is something not

usually available to the public at the price we have negotiated.

Check out the full details at ‐ http://estore.coretechnologypartners.com.au/nsc

Computer Device 1

Dell Venue 11 Pro Tablet – Touch screen Windows 8.1, 2Gb RAM, 64Gb Hard Drive

$1,076.90 Inc GST outright purchase and will be owned by the student (no more to pay after purchase)

These devices come with over 40 educational software titles including Microsoft Office Professional and virus

protection.

We strongly advise families to also take

up the 3 Year Accidental Damage cover

option to cover accidental damage,

repairs and technical support. This costs

$214.50 Inc GST for the 3 year period.

Computer Device 2

Dell Inspiron 11 Notebook – Touch screen Windows 8.1, Intel Celeron Dual Core Processor N2810 (1M Cache, 2.00

GHz), 4GB Single Channel DDR3L 1600MHz, 500GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive

$691.90 Inc GST outright purchase and will be owned by the student (no more to pay after purchase).

These devices come with over 40 educational software titles including Microsoft Office Professional and virus

protection.

We strongly advise families to also take up

the 3 Year Accidental Damage cover option

to cover accidental damage, repairs and

technical support. This costs $165.00 Inc GST

for the 3 year period.

Students who already own a computer device may also bring this along to check it meets networking requirements

and may use this at school if preferred. Limited support will be provided for these devices.

We are unable to provide apps for iPads or android devices under education department licensing and any apps

required will need to be provided by families.

See over for minimum specifications for a device you already own.

Page 6: Newsletter 13 5 may 2014v2

Option 2 – Bring Your Own Device from home (BYOD)

Parents who already own a device may check below to see if it meets minimum requirements for

connection to the school network. This will allow students to use a device that they already own and feel

confident with using. Students will be able to connect to the college network for file, Internet and printing

access. Parents will continue to be responsible for the insurance, repair and service of their own device.

Students must read and sign the “Acceptable Use Agreement” and also complete the “Application to

Network a BYOD Personal Device” available from Mr Bath.

Note – We do NOT expect all students to have their own device on day 1 of the school term. You will have

time to check the best option for you and consult with our IT support staff before committing to any of

these options. However it is hoped that students will have access to a device of their own within a

reasonable time soon after the beginning of school.
