‘Finger on the page’

‘Still and all, why bother? Here's my

answer. Many people need

desperately to receive this message: I

feel and think much as you do, care

about many of the things you care

about, although most people do not

care about them. You are not alone.’

“Not another bookstore!”

Compliments of the season to you and yours .

In many ways the last year has been a truly historic one

where globally ordinary people made their discontent

with various institutions both economic and political,

heard. And why not? In so many ways the old

traditions and certainties seemed to have failed,

exposed as grossly inadequate to tackle present day

challenges.

We have also witnessed a deepening recession

worldwide that doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime

soon.

Why then would anyone start up yet another

bookstore in this chilly monetary climate not being a

sure bet as a business in the best of times

In the same way as people have expressed

dissatisfaction with the old ways of doing things, and

come onto the streets to protest, Mind’s I also wishes

to change the way things have been done in the past.

We are annoyed that reading is an alien pastime to

many in this country and that those that do wish to

read are often cash-strapped and unable to obtain

books at affordable prices.

We are annoyed that public libraries are not

adequately subsidized by the government.

We are annoyed that Tertiary Institutes have a

monopoly on setting textbooks that are overpriced and

constantly being reprinted as new editions which have

to be bought anew each year – a great financial burden

to many students

We are annoyed at all the factors that historically have

made books expensive in this country, and those that

monopolise the market.

Despite dire predictions - including the end of the

world itself - Minds_I has been launched as an act of

faith by out-of-work (yet optimistic) individuals, who

don’t subscribe to myths – Mayan or other – and who

Page 6: Newsletter 1

Minds I Books Newsletter January 2012

try to stay in step with current times despite

advancing age.

We do so by finding new ways to do business, ways

that benefit ordinary people and the environment. For

one thing, we want to spread a culture of reading far

and wide by contributing books to those that don’t

have access to them: youngsters who study at cash

strapped schools and in environments that do not have

libraries. We also want to help local public libraries

that have had funding reduced or withdrawn but who

service large populations. We want to do that by

donating a portion of every book sold to a fund that

will then be used to buy books.

By selling used books we also recycle books rather than

having people buy new ones and thus also reducing the

need to reprint popular books. In

addition and to further this aim, we also intend at a

later stage to exchange books of equal popularity and

condition.

There are many more reasons why Minds_I is a

refreshing and affordable alternative which time and

forthcoming newsletters will reveal, but at this

juncture we wish you all a prosperous and fortuitous

New Year and hope that you will finds Minds_I a

refreshing and affordable way to satisfy your noble

cravings for the written word and that in so doing we

in turn will grow from strength to strength benefitting

all the while not only yourselves but others.

Yours, Maxwell the Cat

More about Mind’s I Welcome to a lush new world of wonderful, quality

books. Welcome to Minds_i Books.

Minds_i is more than a repository of good books and

titles , it is an expression of the desire to make books

available to all, to stimulate literacy and a culture of

reading while conserving the printed word and

reducing the need to reprint books.

Page 7: Newsletter 1

Minds I Books Newsletter January 2012

We do this by selling well preserved used books at very

reasonable prices. Prices that consistently beat the

lowest prices in the market - and then get them to you

as quickly and as painlessly as possible Just because we

are in a recession doesn’t mean you have to deprive

yourself of a good read.

As our stock builds up we will let you know when we

start paying you up to 40% on returns on selected titles

and on books that you return in ‘good nick’. This keeps

books in circulation for longer and reduces the need

for endless reprinting

For every book you buy we

pay 1.5% into a fund to buy

books for cash-strapped

public and school libraries.

We also intend partnering

with charities to sell books

on their behalf so that they

get a better prices than they

would if they sold their books

from thrift shops or at

markets.

We are always available to search for that elusive book

that you simply must have. And if you choose to be on

our mailing list, we will keep you informed about new

acquisitions, while keeping a lookout for books in the

areas you tell us you are interested in.

At various times we may also suggest books that are

particularly interesting or popular with reviews by

those who have already read the books

“We try to help you as

expeditiously as is

possible, finding those

elusive titles and striving to provide

you with a reliable and efficient

service and a wide variety of

literature for all ages and tastes”

Soon we will have our own website and
