Children starting Prep at a State school next year will be required to learn a language through to at least Year 10 under the Victorian Government’s Vision for Languages Education initiative, which is aimed at enhancing students’ personal development, as well as the social and economic benefi ts of language skills. Australian Federal Police (AFP) cyber-security specialists have teamed with the Disney company to create a new online-safety program for primary schools called Online Safety, It Starts With You, hosted at the Disney kids’ site Club Penguin. Year 5 students at the Sophia Mundi Steiner School in Abbotsford have embarked on a fundraising campaign for abused and neglected Asian elephants. In keeping with the Steiner philosophy of fostering creativity through education, they’ve been producing handmade goods and works of art to raise funds for the Elephant Nature Park in Northern Thailand. elephantnaturepark.org

More than 75,000 cases of child abuse have been reported in Victoria this year, according to children’s welfare organisation Berry Street. This fi gure accounts for more than one quarter of reported cases across Australia. Cases include emotional, physical and sexual abuse and neglect. Berry Street recently highlighted the issue with one of its partners, the Melbourne Football Club, which has been a long-time supporter of the organisation’s work.
