That’s the theme of the 12th annual Father-hood Summit, to be held Oct. 6-7, at GreaterNew Birth Church, 8237 W. Silver Spring Drive.

The purpose of this annual, two-day event isto bring men, father’s and future father’s to-gether to identify solutions and resources forsupport in promoting positive activity in the fa-ther role. We also gather data to help addressthe many obstacles that prevent men frombeing involved, responsible and committed fa-thers.

The theme of this year’s Fatherhood Summitis based on realizing the wide spread impact oftrauma and understand potential paths for re-covery.

When changing the narrative, it provides adifferent perspective. Not what’s wrong butrather, what happened?

The guiding principal of our theme is to iden-tify resources to assist in the development of in-ternal strengths, discipline and knowledge toovercome negative influences and barriers im-pacting the life of fathers.

Then the appropriate referrals can be madeto begin the healing process. MFI believes thatthe goal of improving the well-being of childrenis to provide them with involved, responsible,and committed fathers that have access to theservices needed for wholeness.

of a friend, he recently attendedservices at St. Matthew’s Chris-tian Methodist Episcopal churchclose to UWM’s campus. Seatedamong the largely African Amer-ican congregation and of Asiandescent himself, the man raised

in Hawaii felt slightly out of hiscomfort zone.But Shoho learned much

about the faith, values and livesof his fellow worshipers. It alsoreminded him about the impor-tance of community and of feel-ing welcomed and embraceddespite coming from a differentbackground. Shoho says he hopes to in-

spire others to take trips outsidetheir comfort zone and help Mil-waukee reach its potential as adiverse, collaborative city. It’s a crucial step toward one of

his main goals: addressing theshortage of teachers of colorwho are ready to step into area

classrooms.Toward that end, he’ll lead a

discussion involving school su-perintendents, principals, pas-tors and community volunteersframed around this theme: “Fos-tering Racial Relationships toStreng-then Communities andSchools: What Actionable StepsCan We Take Now?”It happens Tuesday, Oct. 17,

as part of the On The Tableevent sponsored by the GreaterMilwaukee Foundation. Shoho’sconversation will be one of manysimilar talks happening through-out the region on that day.Each discussion aims to build

bridges between people eager to

take concrete steps toward abetter Milwaukee. More than2,500 people are registered toparticipate in On The Table, in-cluding 11 who will join Shoho atUWM for lunch. UWM officials will host several

other conversations, too, as anOn The Table super host.Shoho’s area of concern is

close to his heart. “I would likeeveryone leaving On The Tableto commit to doing something,”he says, “even if it’s small, tostrengthen our communities andschools.”He thinks one of the best paths

toward that reality is a biggerand sturdier pipeline of African-American, Latino and Asianteachers who graduate fromUWM and serve in schools withhigh minority enrollments.After becoming the School of

Education’s dean in 2015,Shoho made a point of meetingwith superintendents throughoutthe greater Milwaukee region.One request kept coming:Please, send us more teachersof color.Those requests meet a hard

reality when Shoho addresseseach new class of UWM studentteachers. Of about 150 students,he sees perhaps 10 who aren’twhite, a startlingly low rate giventhe region’s demographicmakeup.It’s led to a full-throttle effort to

recruit and retain students ofcolor so they can get their edu-

cation at UWM and get intoclassrooms to make a differ-ence.A teacher diversification effort

has become a major part of M3

(pronounced M-cubed), thewide-ranging collaboration in-volving UWM, Milwaukee PublicSchools and Milwaukee AreaTechnical College. Publiclylaunched in January 2017, M3

has already garnered inspirationand ideas from Call Me Mister, alongstanding, state-funded pro-gram in South Carolina that en-courages African-American mento teach in elementary schools.Shoho and other M3 stake-

holders hosted Call Me Misterrepresentatives in April. Lessons learned from that

meeting and other endeavorswill go toward recruiting AfricanAmericans, Latinos and Asiansinto the teaching ranks at all lev-els. “I’m not aware of anyone who

doesn’t recognize the need formore teachers of color,” Shohosays. Getting them there, and keep-

ing them in the classroom long-term, is a more difficultchallenge. But he knows fromexperience that success buildson success, and he intends toget it rolling.“If kids see teachers who look

like them,” Shoho says, “theysee role models and think of be-coming teachers themselves.”

Alan Shoho isUWM’s School ofEducation dean,but that doesn’tmean he’sstopped learninghimself.One example: At the invitation

of a friend, he recently attendedservices at St. Matthew’s Chris-tian Methodist Episcopal churchclose to UWM’s campus. Seatedamong the largely African Amer-ican congregation and of Asiandescent himself, the man raised

in Hawaii felt slightly out of hiscomfort zone.But Shoho learned much

about the faith, values and livesof his fellow worshipers. It alsoreminded him about the impor-tance of community and of feel-ing welcomed and embraceddespite coming from a differentbackground. Shoho says he hopes to in-

spire others to take trips outsidetheir comfort zone and help Mil-waukee reach its potential as adiverse, collaborative city. It’s a crucial step toward one of

his main goals: addressing theshortage of teachers of colorwho are ready to step into area

classrooms.Toward that end, he’ll lead a

discussion involving school su-perintendents, principals, pas-tors and community volunteersframed around this theme: “Fos-tering Racial Relationships toStreng-then Communities andSchools: What Actionable StepsCan We Take Now?”It happens Tuesday, Oct. 17,

as part of the On The Tableevent sponsored by the GreaterMilwaukee Foundation. Shoho’sconversation will be one of manysimilar talks happening through-out the region on that day.Each discussion aims to build

bridges between people eager to

take concrete steps toward abetter Milwaukee. More than2,500 people are registered toparticipate in On The Table, in-cluding 11 who will join Shoho atUWM for lunch. UWM officials will host several

other conversations, too, as anOn The Table super host.Shoho’s area of concern is

close to his heart. “I would likeeveryone leaving On The Tableto commit to doing something,”he says, “even if it’s small, tostrengthen our communities andschools.”He thinks one of the best paths

toward that reality is a biggerand sturdier pipeline of African-American, Latino and Asianteachers who graduate fromUWM and serve in schools withhigh minority enrollments.After becoming the School of

Education’s dean in 2015,Shoho made a point of meetingwith superintendents throughoutthe greater Milwaukee region.One request kept coming:Please, send us more teachersof color.Those requests meet a hard

reality when Shoho addresseseach new class of UWM studentteachers. Of about 150 students,he sees perhaps 10 who aren’twhite, a startlingly low rate giventhe region’s demographicmakeup.It’s led to a full-throttle effort to

recruit and retain students ofcolor so they can get their edu-

cation at UWM and get intoclassrooms to make a differ-ence.A teacher diversification effort

has become a major part of M3

(pronounced M-cubed), thewide-ranging collaboration in-volving UWM, Milwaukee PublicSchools and Milwaukee AreaTechnical College. Publiclylaunched in January 2017, M3

has already garnered inspirationand ideas from Call Me Mister, alongstanding, state-funded pro-gram in South Carolina that en-courages African-American mento teach in elementary schools.Shoho and other M3 stake-

holders hosted Call Me Misterrepresentatives in April. Lessons learned from that

meeting and other endeavorswill go toward recruiting AfricanAmericans, Latinos and Asiansinto the teaching ranks at all lev-els. “I’m not aware of anyone who

doesn’t recognize the need formore teachers of color,” Shohosays. Getting them there, and keep-

ing them in the classroom long-term, is a more difficultchallenge. But he knows fromexperience that success buildson success, and he intends toget it rolling.“If kids see teachers who look

like them,” Shoho says, “theysee role models and think of be-coming teachers themselves.”
