In the spring of 2009, I received a phone call from a mother who informed me her daughter began a book drive all on her own for the children of Uganda. She wanted to know how I could get the books to Uganda. I thought about it and said, “Books are heavy to transport...however, I am sure we can find a way”. It became the passion of the Billings youth and students to provide books for impoverished children and orphans of Uganda who have never owned a book of their own. Their only desire is for an educa-tion and hope for a life out of poverty. In 2009, an 8th grade class at Will James, spearheaded by Rachel Jones and her teacher, Mrs. Hatler, wrote and illustrated books for kids in Uganda. This began the vision for the shipping container of books and medical supplies. Other kids and families collected many more books. Imagine, Kids 4 Kids—half a world away! With the help of many generous donors and a missions

team from Grace Bible Church in Laurel, we made this “more than a book drive” and delivered a “Love Pack” of school sup-plies, uniforms (sewn by the widows who were given a sewing machine to start their own busi-ness), mosquito nets, blankets and more to 98 kids on Canaan Farm - Family Empowerment Uganda in Feb 2010. Fueled by the pure joy of the kids receiv-ing the books and Love Packs, as well as, the gratitude of the parent or guardian, we endeav-ored to reach out to the entire village school, Katamarwa Primary, by raising 1,000 Love Packs! In the fall of 2010, prayers were answered. In part-nership with Far Reaching Minis-tries and Calvary Chapel Billings, 957 Love Packs were distributed through a 3 day VBS. God’s love for the impoverished children was shared in a mighty way. We are grateful to all who donated and participated to make

Rachel’s dream a reality.

One Thousand Cups

In January 2011, our mission team, (Leigh Taggart, Dr. James Hinshaw, Ashley Hinshaw and Nadine), traveled back to Family Empowerment Uganda—Canaan Farm. We did a follow up outreach with Katamarwa Pri-mary School.. The village healthcare workers we trained previously, taught the kids on hygiene, sanitation and hand washing. We had 1000 soaps and toothbrushes for the Love Packs outreach last fall. Since Nadine was unable to go be-cause Kenny was critically ill with a sickle cell crisis, the di-rector decided to wait to distrib-ute them until we came. The Ugandan bio-sand water filter technicians, Dennis and Geof-frey, introduced bio-sand water filters and importance of learn-ing better while well hydrated

with clean water. Most children do not eat breakfast or drink wa-ter before coming to school. Many do not even get lunch or drink wa-ter throughout the day. No wonder they have headaches and have trou-ble concentrating! It was suggested the kids could share cups for drink-ing the water. However, that is not healthy…so we made a detour and stopped at the “House of Plastics” and after much begging, we loaded 1000 brightly colored green, blue and red cups on the van and headed for the farm. It was wonderful to see the Ugandans we trained flour-ish while teaching in public. The sustainability dream is getting closer every day! Thank you! Hope 2 One Life is empowering widows, orphans and families in Uganda with

the goal toward community restoration from war and poverty, self independ-

ence and sustainability, while valuing each life with dignity and all persons as

children of God.

HOPE 2 ONE LIFE

Tom Osborne, our hydrologist, was successful in receiving grants from Atkinson Foundation ($10,000) and National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation ($6,000). This along with fundrais-ing efforts through World Water Day awareness events, the $27,000 deep solar water well has been funded. Hallelujah! Tom went over to Uganda in September to oversee the work. Due to some delays with the tank stand it was not finished. However, we just received word it is completed and running well. We still need funding for the water piping project to the clinic, commu-nity kitchen, church and bath/toilet areas. We are also fundraising for the solar power and rain water collection for the clinic. Leigh and Tom will be presenting the clinic and solar water updates at the Dinner Auction Fundraiser, Nov 10th. You won’t want to miss this

exciting news and photos!

The Farm looks fantastic, with all kinds of new buildings going up, including the Clinic, the Vo-cational School, a teachers quar-ters, and many new tukels for all the help that is part of the farm community. We christened the clinic building with a small medical treatment day. Only about a hundred people showed up. It was supposed to be pri-marily pregnant women (seeing Dr. Hinshaw) and small children, but you know how that goes, so we worked until it was too dark to see the medications. It has inspired us to strive for solar panels so we can see in the evenings!! All in all, it was great to be working in the space of the new clinic!! So many more work days to come in the future. The seven women from the Village Healthcare Training are doing fantastic. Alice, Christine, Pauline, Evelyn, Katie, Paula, and Jennifer arrived once again with work bags in hand, ready

for more learning!!
