APAS (The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan) has been recommending the devel- opment of an insurance program for livestock pro- ducers and now the con- cept has become a reality. The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corpo- ration (SCIC) has an- nounced it will be deliver- ing the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program (WLPIP) for Saskatch- ewan producers. Beginning this spring, WLPIP will be available to Saskatchewan produc- ers through their local Crop Insurance ofce. Producers will be able to purchase price insurance options for their calves, fed cattle, feeder cattle and hogs. WLPIP is a risk man- agement tool that allows producers to purchase market price protection on cattle and hogs. The program insures produc- ers against an unexpected drop in price over a de- ned period of time,” de- tails Agriculture Minister, Lyle Stewart. Producers pay a premium to receive forward price coverage and if the market price falls below the coverage price, the producer will receive a payment. WLPIP is based on the existing Alberta livestock price insurance program. Saskatchewan producers will now be on a level play- ing eld with producers in Alberta and western Can- ada with the introduction of this program. “We’re looking forward to seeing the program details so we can better assess its impact,” says Norm Hall, APAS Presi- dent. “This may be es- pecially important with recent reductions in Agri- Stability and AgriInvest.” SCIC staff say they are available to sit down, one- on-one with producers, to provide more information on how livestock price insurance works, how to sign up for the program and how to purchase in- surance policies. Producers can also get more information by vis- iting their local Crop In- surance ofce or online at www.saskcropinsurance. com/wlpip. – WLPIP coming this spring Gaming grants awarded More than 800 groups and organiza- tions across the province are benet- ting from approximately $1.4 million in charitable gaming grants distributed by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGa) – $104,000 of goes to Yorkton. “These grants will provide a nancial boost to a number of important projects and programs in communities across the province,” Minister responsible for SLGA Donna Harpauer says. Groups that raise funds through li- censed charitable gaming (bingo, rafes, breakopen ticket sales, Texas Hold ‘em poker and Monte Carlo events) receive a quarterly grant equal to 25 per cent of net proceeds raised through these activi- ties. Groups that conduct licensed chari- table gaming activities and events do not have to apply for the charitable gaming grant. “Let it snow... Let it snow... Let it snow!” That’s some of the words in a popular song. That’s also what the snowmobil-ers have been saying. Well, lately, we have received enough snow to satisfy everybody’s wish-es! Now, we have to han-dle the snowfall! And who knows how much more snow we’ll get in the days to come?

A HAZARD TO YOUR HEALTH

But wait a minute before you grab that shov-el! Medical reports indi-cate that snow shoveling can be potentially haz-ardous to your health! Be informed before you even lift a finger to clear your walk and driveway from now on. Dr. Barry Franklin’s study was published in the American College of Sports Medicine, Health and Fitness Journal back in 1997. Today, it is still worth mentioning his findings- that shoveling snow causes a dispropor-tionate and excessive demand on the heart, due to several factors.

A STRAIN ON THE HEART

This exercise uses mainly the upper body muscles. The shoveler works in an upright pos-ture, while his legs are frequently motionless. Isometric exertion occurs. This means that muscles contract with minimal movement of joints. Also, the person frequently holds his breath, which further strains his body. All this occurs while the individual is exposed to the cold weather, mean-while inhaling cold air! Exposure to cold air can also trigger a reflex spasm in a coronary artery. This could lead to angina (chest pain), myocardial infarction (heart attack) or sudden cardiac death!

ARE YOU IN SHAPE?

It is the combination of vigorous physical activity,

exposure to cold air and having a susceptible heart that jeopardizes the car-diovascular system. This is especially true in indi-viduals who do not par-ticipate in regular physi-cal exercise and are out of condition.

WHO IS AT RISK?

If you have a history of cardiac disease, you are at risk for a cardiac acci-dent during snow shovel-ing. If you have symptoms that suggest a possible heart disorder, such as chest pain or pressure, dizziness or an abnormal heart rhythm, you are also at risk. If you have one or more major cardiac risk factors, such as tobacco use, high blood pressure, high cholester-ol, diabetes or a seden-tary lifestyle, then you are also at risk.

RECOMMENDATIONS Here are some recom-mendations for snow shovelers. First of all, participate in regular physical activity for 30 minutes, three times or more per week, through-out the year. This will help condition you to do this and other strenuous jobs without overtaxing your body. Secondly, avoid large meals, alcohol and tobacco use before and after shoveling. Your body needs its entire resources to accomplish demanding chores. Dress in several light layers rather than one heavy layer, so that you can remove layers of clothing as necessary. Wear a hat. A great deal of body heat is lost through the head, when it is exposed to the cold. Also wear a scarf or mask, to avoid inhaling cold air. Consider using a snow blower. This investment significantly reduces the amount of effort needed from your heart. It’s bet-ter to strain your wallet than your heart, don’t you think? When using a shovel, lightly coat it with paraf-

fin or candle wax. This will help prevent snow from sticking to it and will hopefully make your job easier. Start gradually to avoid sudden strenuous exer-tion. It is also wise to stretch before and after snow shoveling, to avoid back and muscle strains. Use your leg muscles as well as your arm muscles to spread the effort throughout your body. Lift modest amounts of snow at a time. Pace your-self while shoveling. Take frequent breaks. Take as much time as you need to get the job done safely. Please remember that we should all be cautious when performing vigor-ous activities, but those with added risks need to use extra caution. Have a safe winter!

Ed, my neighbor next door, went to his farm yesterday without pay-ing any attention to the wind warning on weath-er reports. Ruby wasn’t to be home until nine in the evening, so Ed put-tered around at rebuild-ing a truck motor in his Quonset, from afternoon to early evening. What a shock Ed had when he started for home about seven p.m. The wind had gone crazy swirling snow around in explosions of momentary white outs. Ed said that the wind was ripping around with enough force to wake hibernat-ing animals. After a slow drive home, Ed heard that the winds were gusting at 104 km per hour. Ed, now claims, that the wind was so strong that it almost ripped the shirt off his

back even with his coat on. Ed was annoyed with me, when I said that he exaggerated too much. I do agree that it certainly was a fierce wind storm that had everyone’s attention. It seems to prove the point that almost anything can happen when it comes to the weather. I personal-ly like the wind turbines that use the wind to gen-erate power. Usually we have more than enough wind blowing about us, so why not put it to good use. After a wind storm, there is often property and tree damage, so it may as well, leave behind the power for everyone’s use through wind turbines. It is impossible for us to control the wind and weather. Thankfully, God can make the impos-

sible become possible by his unlimited genius and power. The Bible speaks repeatedly of God doing what is impossible for us to do. Once, Jesus and his disciples were in a boat on the lake, when a furi-ous storm came so that the waves swept over the boat. The disciples became frightened and certain that they were going to drown. Jesus, however, rebuked the winds and waves and both the waves and

winds became complete-ly calm. This left the disciples amazed that the winds and waves obeyed Jesus. The Bible makes it clear that God specializ-es in doing what seems impossible from our per-spective. God often uses what we have to change the impossible into the possible. The youth, David, used his sling-shot, as his weapon against wild animals as a shepherd. He was not afraid to fight Goliath

the Philistine warrior with his slingshot because he was certain God would help him gain the victory. The giant came to fight David with his sword and spear and javelin, but David came against the giant in the name of the Lord Almighty and his sling shot. With God on our side, it doesn’t matter the strength or size of the enemy or the force of the storm we are facing, because what seems impossible will become

possible. If your, family, or per-sonal circumstances become so tangled, that, it is impossible to straighten them out, turn to God. When it seems there is no hope for you turn to God. He is able to use what you have to turn what is impossible to possible. Once, Jesus used five barley loaves and two fish to feed five thou-sand folks. With God, the impossible becomes possible.

According to a recent Desjardins Insurance retirement survey, many Canadians remain in retire-ment planning limbo. The survey found that Canadians who lack confi-dence in financial institu-tions and advisors were more likely to feel that sav-ing for retirement planning was confusing and diffi-cult. They also tended to have lower incomes, fewer savings and were less like-ly to seek financial infor-mation in main-stream media. As a result, they were more likely to feel that their own financial security is poor.

If you were to compare your situation against these results, how would you rate your retirement plan-ning confidence on a scale of one to five, if one was the lowest? Are you like the majority of respondents who find it very confus-ing? What would it take to overcome your fear and finally start investing in your future? Similar to starting a diet or quitting smoking, it usually takes a shock to your system to make critical behavioural changes. For example, maybe your parents or grand-parents have to keep working past their ideal retirement age because they didn’t save enough or suffered investment losses. They’re likely scared and feeling desperate. "That’s

not going to be me," you tell yourself even though you’re afraid it just might be.Put your money where your emotion is

Instead of hitting your financial rock-bottom, why not decide to put your money where your emo-tion is? You can set up a plain and simple saving plan that is so automatic, you won’t even notice you’re saving. One easy option to consider is to contribute to your employ-er-sponsored retirement

savings or pension plan.• The pay-yourself-first

concept: Your contribu-tions are made automati-cally through payroll deductions, so it’s virtu-ally painless. If you don’t have it, you won’t spend it.

• Tax savings: Your contri-butions can be deducted before taxes. This means you’re lowering your tax-able income and your contributions can grow, tax-deferred.

• Matching employer con-tributions: Depending on

the features of your plan, your employer may also contribute to your plan. This means that you could double your sav-ings.

• Choice of investment options: You may have access to a variety of investment options that have been carefully selected by experts.

• Lower investment/No transaction fees: Take advantage of group buy-ing power, lower invest-ment management fees and possibly no front-

end, back-end or deferred sales charges.

• Home buyer/life-long-learning possibility: Depending on your plan, you may be able to use some of your savings to purchase a house or return to school.

• Portability: If you decide to leave your employer, you should have the option of transferring your plan to another investment vehicle or savings plan.

Meet your fears head-onThere’s so much infor-

mation about retirement saving that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and to avoid it all together. Instead, try this approach: meet your fears head-on. Make regu-lar retirement saving your goal and you’ll end up changing your financial future for the better. More information on employer-sponsored retirement sav-ings plans and pensions can be found online at www.desjardinslifeinsur-ance.com.

Finding your retirement planning tipping pointSaturday, February 1, 2014 - THE NEWS REVIEW EXTRA - Page 7A

A lifetime dedicated to your career has finally paid off in precious retirement years. You’ve worked hard, and you deserve to enjoy your future. While retirement is often referred to as the golden years, living on a fixed income can be challenging and requires some smart finan-cial planning. Here are a few ways that you can stretch your retirement dollars by saving money at tax time: • Public transit saves money that you might otherwise spend on rising

gas prices, parking, and car maintenance. Not only do seniors typi-cally pay less for public transit, but the cost of certain public transit passes can be claimed on your tax return.

• You may be able to split your eligible pension income with your spouse or common-law partner, allocating up to 50% of your pension to him or her, to lower your combined taxes.

• If you, your spouse, or common-law partner has a severe and pro-longed impairment in physical or mental functions, and meets certain conditions, you might be eligible for the disability tax credit.

• If you care for a spouse or other family member who has an impair-ment that makes them dependent on you for care, the family care-giver amount could save you money.

• Applying for the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax credit helps to offset all or part of the GST or HST that you pay.

• If you receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement or Allowance benefits under the Old Age Security program, you can usually renew

your benefit simply by filing your return by April 30. If you choose not to file a return, you will have to complete a renewal form. This form is available from Service Canada.

Other helpful tax-time information for seniors can be found at www.cra.gc.ca/seniors. To make filing easy this year, why not con-sider filing online? It’s fast, easy and secure. Information to get you started is available at www.cra.gc.ca/getready.
