If not placed in the context of either market his-tory or investment horizon, a significant market drop will cause some investors to doubt the wisdom of their investment plans and become nervous. Then they jeopardize their long-term portfolios by making short-term decisions during the turbulence. They forget that a portfolio stocked with quality invest-ments, and coupled with the right mix and timeline, will ride out the storm. Investor nervousness during market upheaval is not entirely unpredictable, given the effect of so many media delivering the information. The facts may be identical but the cumulative effect of numer-ous outlets providing the same data with different emphases means that some hysteria is inevitable. Investors who conclude the worst, react accord-ingly. They sell at the worst possible time and their panic selling in the midst of the turmoil further drives down share prices. They hope to ‘cut their losses’ but only succeed in turning paper losses into real ones. Some try to time the market by selling with the hope of buying again when things are about to improve. This is a futile activity. The noted profes-sor of finance and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, William Sharpe, proved statistically that a timer has to be right 74 per cent of the time to benefit from market timing. Volatility can be unsettling but it can also be a

friend. For long-term investors, it opens the door to opportunity. By concentrating on valuations, they benefit from the downward impact of emotional sell-ing and add to quality positions at better prices. Dollar-cost averaging techniques work well in volatile markets. Instead of purchasing in a lump sum, investors ease into an acquisition by buying over a long period, eliminating any inclination to time the markets and reducing the cost base. Simply speaking, when the market is up you pay more for fewer shares but as the market drops you receive more shares for the same amount. The lower average price per share means that when the mar-kets rally, as they always do, the returns are big-ger. Business Insider did an interesting dollar-cost averaging calculation with a hypothetical investor

entering the markets at a high point (Oct. 2007) and contributing the same amount monthly into an S&P index fund until December 2013. Despite enduring the crisis of 2008, the return was 48 per cent or roughly a 7.6 per cent annual rate of return. With markets likely to remain erratic over the near-term, investors could also consider incorporat-ing defensiveness with dividend-paying stocks. Consistent cash returns ease dependency on market price appreciation and help reduce portfolio volatil-ity. Sustaining and increasing regular dividends are also important indicators of a company’s quali-ty. It’s a given that stock markets fluctuate but it is also true that well managed and solidly performing companies recover. Therefore investors with care-fully crafted investment plans that include high quality businesses should trust their plans to get them through any periodic turbulence. It takes dis-cipline to remain calm in rough seas, but investors can learn from experienced sailors: “To avoid sea-sickness, keep your eyes on the horizon.” Kim Inglis, CIM, PFP, FCSI, AIFP is an Investment Advisor & Portfolio Manager with Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management, a division of Canaccord Genuity Corp., Member – Canadian Investor Protection Fund. www.reynoldsinglis.ca. “Dr. Myers has guided Parkland College to its position as a well-estab-lished educational insti-tution leading in innova-tion and excellence,” says Lydia Cyr, chairperson of the Parkland College Board of Governors. “We are fortunate to have benefi ted from Dr. Myers’ dedication, hard work, and achievements...” The Board will immedi-ately begin its search for a successor to Dr. Myers.

NEW RECRUITS – A new group of firefighting recruits has started training at Parkland College in Melville. Sixteen students are enrolled in the College’s Professional Firefighting program, which began Aug. 5. This is the 11th platoon to train at Parkland College. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 program is the only full-time firefight-ing program currently available in Saskatchewan. Parkland College delivers the 13-week program in partnership with Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre of Vermilion, AB. Students graduate with a comprehensive blend of theory and practical skills required for entry-level careers at industrial operations and fire departments across Canada. Page 8A - THE NEWS REVIEW EXTRA - Saturday, August 16, 2014

As the rising cost of living eats away at our income, important things like having a good quality health, dental and insurance plan seem out of reach for many individuals. It is, in many cases, the access to these benefits that an employer offers via their group plan, which makes this cover-age affordable. However, many of those who have group coverage do not fully understand what they are entitled to (usually until these ben-efits are required). Further, as govern-

ments cut back services and cost pressures shift to employers, companies will react by moving faster to flexible benefit plans. Such plans con-trol employer costs by covering employees ade-quately for catastrophes but limiting other ser-vices. If you are covered under a group plan it is

important that you have a good grasp of the ben-efits you are entitled to, the conditions which may be attached to these entitlements, and what (if any) costs you are responsible for paying. Who pays for the ben-efits under the group plan? This not only impacts on your pocket-book but also on the amount of tax that you pay. The rule is if the employer pays for the benefit, it is considered a taxable benefit to the employee (a notable exception is life insur-ance). If, on the other hand, the employee pays for the benefit there will be no taxes payable on the benefit. This is of particular significance with respect to receiv-ing disability benefits which may or may not be subject to income tax. When will you be receiving your (long

term) disability benefits ? The time until the employee receives their benefits, both in terms of the waiting period as well as any processing delays is an important consideration as the employee needs to find alternate income during that time. Other issues include if a weekly indemnity is paid dur-ing the waiting period, and possible restriction on receiving long term disability benefits. Are your benefits under the group plan portable? As most of us can expect to have more

than one employer dur-ing our lifetime, porta-bility is an important consideration. In some cases the group plan will give you the option to continue coverage even after you have left your employer. In many cases it is only the life insurance component which is convertible to an individual policy (usually only if applied for within a certain period of time after leav-ing your employer). While in many cases a medical is not required to convert the insurance to a personal plan, the

cost will typically be higher and there may be some limitations in the policies you may convert to. It may be a good idea to obtain per-sonal insurance cover-age independent of your employer’s group plan while you are young (and the policy costs less) and still in good health (especially if the insurance does not have a portability clause and if you develop health concerns in the future which may limit or pro-hibit you from obtaining coverage on an individ-ual basis). What pension will I receive under my com-pany plan? It is essen-tial to your financial future that you know your pension entitle-ment. Do you contribute to a defined-benefit pension plan or to a defined-contribution plan? While the defined-benefit plan guarantees

you a certain level of pension income upon retirement, the defined- contribution plan does not. What plan you have, your entitlements and such issues as vest-ing period, early retire-ment entitlement and the impact of death of the employee on the plan need to be known. An active approach to understanding your group benefits is impor-tant to ensure that you are fully utilizing what you are entitled to and that you are aware of the restrictions and planning around them. The assistance of a qualified financial plan-ner trained to analyse and monitor your group benefits and incorporate the information into your financial plan is recommended.
