    NEWS&NOTES

    Volume 13, Issue 3 January/February 2013

    From the Superintendents Desk

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! It is hard not to get into the holiday spirit

with all of the activities going on at school now. We have holiday concerts,

craft nights, trips to museums, holiday store, a spaghetti dinner, and basketball

season has kicked off. Even with all of this joy and energy in school, we do

know that this time of year isnt as joyous to everyone. A weak economy and

high unemployment still contribute to hardships in our area. Most of us know

community members who, for reasons beyond their control, may need

assistance to heat their homes or to feed their families. Our students are

aware of the situation and have organized to do something about it. Our

Student Government organizes a collection for the local food bank every year.

The students and staff enjoy a friendly competition for the largest donation.

Anyone interested in helping us share the joy of the season may drop food

items off in the guidance office.

CPCS would also like to officially introduce two new employees. Heather

Rousell is our new Guidance Counselor and Chris Murray is our new BusMechanic. Please help us welcome them to the team.

On the topic of staffing, we will begin advertising for both a Director of Pupil

Services and a Principal in January. If you know any qualified people that

would provide strong leadership and would make a positive contribution to our

district and community, please encourage them to apply.

Winter weather is upon us. Any closings or delays will be broadcast on the

local radio and television stations. They will also be posted on the school

    calendar and website. Drive safely.

    Our Mission Statement

The Colton-Pierrepont Central School Community proudly educates students to

become responsible, respectful and resourceful citizens, thereby continuing a

    tradition of innovation and excellence.

COUNSELING CORNERSubmitted by Mary Kay Hafer, School Psychologist

Kaplan Test Prep Survey Finds That College Admissions Officers Discovery of Online Material Damaging to

Applicants Nearly Triples in a Year Over a Quarter of College Admissions Officers Today Include Google or

Facebook in Applicant Evaluations; 35% Report Discovering Information that Negatively Impacted Prospective

Students Admissions Chances Up from 12% Last Year. Results from Kaplan Test Preps 2012 survey of

college admissions officers* show that schools are increasingly discovering information on Facebook and

Google that negatively impact applicants acceptance chances. While the percentage of admissions officers

who took to Google (27%) and checked Facebook (26%) as part of the applicant review process increased

slightly (20% for Google and 26% for Facebook in 2011) from last year, the percentage that said they

discovered something that negatively impacted an applicants chances of getting into the school nearly tripled

from 12% last year to 35% this year. Offenses cited included essay plagiarism, vulgarities in blogs, alcohol

consumption in photos, things that made them wonder, and illegal activities. In 2008, when Kaplan began

tracking this trend, only one in 10 admissions officers reported checking applicants social networking pages.

Social media used to basically mean Facebook. But the underlying trend we see is the increase in use of

Google, which taps into a social media landscape thats proliferated to include Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest,

Instagram, blogging and other platforms and teens today are using all of these channels, said Jeff Olson,Vice President of Data Science, Kaplan Test Prep. Additionally, were seeing a growing cultural ubiquity in

social media use, plus a generation thats grown up with a very fluid sense of privacy norms. In the face of all

these trends, the rise in discovery of digital dirty laundry is inevitable.

Olson noted, With regard to college admissions, the traditional application the essays, the letters of

recommendation represent the polished version of an applicant, while often whats found online is a rawer

version of that applicant. Schools are philosophically divided on whether an applicants digital trail is fair game

and the majority of admissions officers do not look beyond the submitted application, but our advice to studen

is to think first, Tweet later.

Kaplans survey also found that only 15% of colleges currently have rules regarding the checking of applicants

Facebook or social networking pages a percentage that has remained fairly consistent over the past fewyears. Of schools that do have a policy, 69% said the policy prohibited admissions officers from visiting

applicants pages still leaving the vast majority of admissions officers with the flexibility to act at their own

    discretion.

Students can learn more about how to better safeguard their digital footprints at

    www.kaptest.com/socialmediatips.

Far more common than the use of social media to evaluate applicants is its use in recruiting potential students

Kaplan Test Preps survey found that 87% of colleges use Facebook for this purpose (up from 82% two years

ago); 76% use Twitter (up from 56%); and 73% use YouTube (up from 56%). College admissions officers hav

not, however, embraced Google Plus only 9% are using it to recruit prospective students. For more information about Kaplan Test Preps 2012 survey of college admissions officers, please contact

Russell Schaffer at [email protected] or 212.453.7538.

Kaplan will be releasing more results from its survey in the coming weeks.

    * For the 2012 survey, 350 admissions officers from the nations top 500 colleges and universities as compiled

from U.S. News & World Report and Barrons were polled by telephone between July and September 2012.

    NEWS FROM PRINCIPAL RANDY JOHNSON

    Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s):

Colton-Pierrepont Central School District recognizes the importance of daily attendance and its correlationto success in the classroom. School attendance is mandatory in New York State and it is the legal obligation parents to ensure that their children attend school on a regular basis.

In order to receive course credit, students must earn a passing grade and meet the requirements of

attending a minimum of 90 percent of all scheduled classes. This means a student can be tardy and/orabsent no more than five (5) times per class for each quarter or twenty (20) times per year. Classesthat are only half year or run for longer than a year work under a similar fashion with a prorated amount ofabsences.

Any student who is tardy or absent from school must bring a written, dated excuse signed by theparent/guardian that explains the reason for the tardiness or absence. If a student fails to bring in a note thatday, the absence is classified automatically as unexcused.

Excused absences are those absences due to: personal illness, illness in the family that warrant studentabsence, death in the family, religious observance, quarantine, required court appearance, military obligation, health clinic visit, approved school programs/college visits/work programs, impassable roads due to inclemenweather, late arrival by school bus and In-school or At-Home Behavioral Awareness days. For those timeswhen a family is taking an educational trip or an appointment that cannot be scheduled outside the school day

prior approval must be sought in writing to an administrator.Unexcused absences are those absences not meeting the criteria for excused absences as detailed aboveExamples of unexcused absences include, but are not limited to the following: truancy, employment, vacationappointments other than medical, legal or administratively approved, hunting, fishing, or other recreationalinterests, shopping, babysitting, helping at home, running errands, missing the bus, sleeping or any otherabsences not related to illness or an emergency situation.
