Sh. Radha Mohan Singh, Hon'ble Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, was the Chief Guest. His Excellency Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, Governor and Chancellor of the university presided over the function. Sh. Om Parkash Dhankar, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Govt. of Haryana and Dr Kamal Gupta, Chief Parliamentary Secretary were present as Guests of Honour. The august gathering cheered all 316 students who were awarded degrees and 21 students who were bestowed with gold medals for excellence in various fields. I heartily congratulate the students for getting degrees and also compliment their family members for achievement of their wards. I applaud the 21 students who excelled in academic and research activities during years 2011-15. I also congratulate Dr. Prem Singh, Director, Teaching Veterinary Clinical Services Complex; Dr. Sushila Mann, Department of Animal Biotechnology and Dr. Rajender Singh, Senior Extension Specialist, Rohtak to whom best teacher medals were conferred upon for the excellent work in the area of teaching, research and extension education, respectively. On this occasion, Chief Guest Sh. Radha Mohan Singh exhorted the students to pick one goal at a time and accomplish the same with acquisition of knowledge regularly, sheer determination and hard work. He applauded the LUVAS for its academic achievements, high standards of research and for providing excellent services to the livestock owners of the state. He went on to express his satisfaction for achievements of the University which finds special mention in the convocation address such as new cattle breed- Hardhenu, signing of agreements with various national and International Institutes, and patents awarded to various scientific techniques. He expressed happiness that with the sustained efforts of the University and the State Government, Haryana has become the first Foot and Mouth disease free State in India. I specially thank Hon'ble Governor of Haryana, His Excellency Prof. Solanki for showing special interest in Animal Husbandry related activities. During this quarter, a three member's team of Veterinary Council of India (VCI) visited LUVAS. Dear Readers,

I take immense pleasure in presenting the first issue of LUVAS Newsletter of the year 2016. The year began on a strong note of rejuvenated efforts of LUVAS fraternity to spear head the University further to attain new horizons of growth and development. First major event of the year was marked by first ever convocation of the university on January 28, 2016 coinciding with the 151th birth anniversary of the legendary freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai. Sh. Radha Mohan Singh, Hon'ble Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, was the Chief Guest. His Excellency Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, Governor and Chancellor of the university presided over the function. Sh. Om Parkash Dhankar, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Govt. of Haryana and Dr Kamal Gupta, Chief Parliamentary Secretary were present as Guests of Honour. The august gathering cheered all 316 students who were awarded degrees and 21 students who were bestowed with gold medals for excellence in various fields. On January 28, 2016 the 151th birth anniversary of Lala Lajpat

Rai, the legendary freedom fighter, Lala Lajpat Rai University of

Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Hisar organized its first ever

convocation in Indira Gandhi Auditorium of Chaudhary Charan

Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. The Union Agriculture

and Farmer Welfare Minister, Sh. Radha Mohan Singh was the

Chief Guest, whereas the Governor and Chancellor Prof. Kaptan

Singh Solanki presided over the program, Sh. Om Parkash

Dhankar, the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister of Haryana

and Dr Kamal Gupta, Chief Parliamentary Secretary were present

as Guests of Honour. A total of 316 students were awarded

degrees and 21 students were bestowed with gold medals for

excellence in their respective areas.

Delivering his convocation address, the Chief Guest

congratulated the students and their family members and

emphasized that the graduation held an important place in the life of

every one and was sure that all the students getting the degrees

must be feeling very happy on the occasion. Education at

graduation level is such a milestone which opens the gateway to the

higher education and brighter future.

The Vice-Chancellor while welcoming Prof. Kaptan Singh

Solanki, Chancellor and Governor of Haryana, Sh. Radha Mohan

Singh, Chief Guest and other esteemed guests and also presented

the report of last five years. He made a mention about the special

interest shown by Prof. Solanki in Animal Husbandry related

activities upliftment of the lives of farmers of the state. He welcomed

Sh. Radha Mohan Singh, with a special mention of cow protection

and cow promotion as his priorities. He also appreciated the efforts

made by the Union Agriculture Minister for his contribution towards

the up-liftment of poor and Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme

initiated by the Central Government. While giving detail about the

achievements made by LUVAS during past five years, he informed

that the University achieved various milestones in education,

research and extension education, which included increase in the

number of seats for encouraging veterinary education, starting of

new courses, medals and scholarships award of the students for

excellent performance, apart from establishment of Dairy Science

and Technology College and a private veterinary college.

Making a mention of the various achievements made by the

University in the field of research, the Vice-Chancellor informed that

the new breeds of cattle, sheep and poultry such as Hardhenu,

Harnali and Harlay respectively have been developed. He spoke

about different tests developed by the University for various

diseases such as foot and mouth disease, hemorrhagic septicemia

and surra. He informed that the Directorate of Extension Education

of the University was working towards making farmers of the state

aware about various new techniques developed by the University. A

special campaign has been started by the University for Women

Empowerment by imparting them knowledge of latest activities in

Animal Husbandry.

Dr. Kamal Gupta CPS, Guest of Honour of the function,

congratulated LUVAS for effecting change in conventional dress

code. He expressed his concern about problem of global warming

and said that he was happy to inform about inauguration of

International Solar Alliance Headquarter in Haryana by our Hon'ble

Prime Minister Sh. Narender Modi Ji few days back. Sh O.P.

Dhankar, Minister of Agriculture, Govt. of Haryana in his address

remembered the services of Lala Lajpat Rai for the nation and said

that he will always remain a source of inspiration for the generations

to come. Listing the challenges for new graduates he said that our

goal was to make our state number one in milk production. He also

spoke about problem of stray cattle and repelled that unfortunately

large numbers of such animals in our country were on road due to

various reasons. He appealed the graduates to work hard to

improve the condition of cattle and their productivity. Further, he

emphasized on organic farming and was hopeful of making Haryana

as advanced organic farming state.

In his blessings to the new graduates Prof. Kaptan Singh

Solanki, Governor of Haryana and Chancellor of LUVAS

congratulated all the students and their parents. He appreciated the

standard and conduct of the convocation. He stressed upon the

need of veterinarians for upliftment of the society. He advised the

graduates to be better human being and to remember five things

starting with G in life, these include: Gaye, Gita, Ganga, Gaytri

Mantra and Ganesha.

Richard Everitt, Director of Education, the British Council India to celebrate

the University of Edinburgh-India partnership on February16, 2016 at

Delhi. Vice-Chancellor LUVAS discussed the progress of MOU between

two Universities with Prof. Sir Timothy O'Shea.

Increase in Number of Seats for Admission in B.V.Sc. & A.H.

Board of Studies, COVS in its 247th meeting held on January

18, 2016 approved increase in number of seats for admission in

B.V.Sc. & A.H. at COVS, LUVAS from academic session 2016-17.

With this approval intake capacity of the college will increase to 78

(Haryana resident-67, VCI-11) with additional seats for Kashmiri

migrants-2, NRI-5, Bhutan nationals-2.

Board of Studies, COVS in its 247th meeting held on January

Administrative ActivitiesLUVAS from academic session 2016-17. Further, it has been

decided that admission to this course will be on basis of entrance

test in Physics, Chemistry & Biology of 10+2 level and also

admission has been made open for girls from academic session

2016-17.

Recruitment of Clerks

A total of thirty eight clerks were recruited for different offices in

LUVAS following written test, typing test and interview. However

thirty seven joined and an induction training for them was organized

from February 29 to March 21, 2016 by the Directorate of Human

Resource Management, LUVAS.

A total of sixty faculty members were allowed to attend National/International seminars/conferences/workshops during the financial year

2015-16 with the total financial assistance of Rs. 1.5 lakhs released by the council under ICAR development assistance. Further second ICAR

development assistance grant of Rs. 195.10 lakhs was received and distributed to Deans/Directors under the respective Heads for utilization.

Directorate also finalized guidelines for exchange of students & faculty between The Pirbright Institute, U.K. and LUVAS for consideration of

the academic council.

Election of Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Teachers Association (LUVASTA)

Dr. Jagvir Rawat, Deptt. of Vety. Microbiology and Dr. Ashok Malik. Deptt. Livestock Products Technology, College of Veterinary Sciences

were elected as the President and Secretary respectively of LUVASTA.

Candidates elected for other positions include Dr. Sajjan Sihag as Vice-

President, Dr. Sandeep Gupta as Joint Secretary and Dr. Amit Punia as

Treasurer. Unopposed elected members were Dr. Minakshi, Dr. Jyotsana

Madan, Dr. Sandeep Saharan, Dr. Aman Kumar, Dr. Rajesh and Dr. Vijender

Singh. The Vice- Chancellor congratulated the newly elected executive

committee of the association and hoped that all will work together to bring

laurel to the university.

Extension ActivitiesWomen Empowerment Programme

Taking a major step towards women empowerment, the

Directorate of Extension Education organized 39 Vocational Dairy

Farming Training Programmes for women across the state of

Haryana. Each programme was of five days duration. As many as

1950 women of all ages and of varied sociocultural backgrounds

benefitted from this programme conducted under the RKVY project

entitled “Upgradation of knowledge and skill of farm women”. The

feedback from the participants was quite encouraging and they

assured to boost the milk production in Haryana.

Participation of LUVAS in Krishi and Bhains Mela

The Directorate of Extension Education, LUVAS put up a massive display of its activities, services and recommendations for the benefit of

farmers in CCSHAU Hisar 'Krishi Mela' and CIRB, Hisar Bhains Mela.

Thousands of farmers visited the LUVAS stalls, interacted with scientists and

benefitted from the scientific knowledge.

Training on Balance Feeding

A seven day training programme on “Balanced Nutrition and Importance

of Mineral Mixture in Animal Production” was organized by the Department of

Animal Nutrition for SC & ST candidates of Haryana State from January 30 to

February 5, 2016. The training focused on demonstrating techniques in

The university participated in Kisan Mela organized on March 8-9, 2016 at CCSHAU. An exhibition was organized on this occasion in which different departments displayed the recent research technologies useful for the farmers. A large number of farmers visited the various stalls of LUVAS and were advised about different aspects of animal health and production. Programme for Popularization of Balanced Feeding

The Directorate conducted another set of 16 training programmes of 2-days duration, 10 Kisan gosthies and 8 programmes of demonstration for the farmers in different villages all over Haryana for popularization of balanced feeding in dairy animals to enhance productivity under another RKVY project. More than 2200 farmers were benefitted from these programmes.

Fellowship Award

The Indian Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (IAAVP) felicitated Dr. Arun Kumar Sangwan as IAAVP National Fellow during National Congress of Veterinary Parasitology held at Chennai from February17-19, 2016, in recognition of his outstanding contributions and ach ievemen ts i n Ve te r i na ry Parasitology. Dr. Gaurav Gupta, Assistant Professor, Veterinary

Pharmacology was awarded “Best Young Scientist Oral

Presentation Award” for the research paper entitled “Sub-acute

toxicity of imidacloprid in 14 days trial in male rats and its

amelioration by resveratrol” in XV Annual Convention of Indian

Society of Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology (ISVPT) held at

National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal on January 14-16, 2016.

Dr. Rakha Honoured by Indian Society for Veterinary Medicine (ISVM)

Dr. N. K. Rakha, Dean PGS attended 34th Annual Convention of Indian Society for

Veterinary Medicine from 17 to 19 February, 2016 wherein he was invited to present a

Lead paper and was also facilitated. Research paper of Dr. Gaurav Charaya, Ph.D.

student of Dr. Rakha was adjudged as the best oral presentation. Dr. Rakha was honoured

by certificate of Appreciation as well.

l Dr. Kanisth Batra, PhD student of the Department of ABT won the first prize in poster presentation competition for the poster entitled 'RT-LAMP assay to detect western strains of bluetongue virus in India' at the National Conference on Biotechnology: Emerging Trends (NCB-2016) at CDLU, Sirsa, Haryana, from February 11-12, 2016.

l Dr. Vinay Kumar, PhD student of the Department of ABT won the second prize in poster presentation competition.for the poster entitled 'Differentiation of Brucella abortus and Brucella melitensis by real time PCR assay' at the National Conference on Biotechnology: Emerging Trends (NCB-2016) at CDLU, Sirsa, Haryana, from February 11-12, 2016.

First Prize in Anveshan: 2015

Dr. Kanisht Batra, Ph.D. scholar of Animal Biotechnology, LUVAS has been awarded first prize in Anveshan: Research projects by students held at Anand, Sardar Patel University, Gujarat from March 28-30, 2016 for his project “Novel Approach of Early Pregnancy Diagnosis in Bovines”.In this national event a total of 75 participants from as many universities with 18 projects from agriculture sciences were there for competition. He got cash prize of Rs 50000/-for first position.

Interclass Sports Tournament

An interclass sports tournament for badminton and table tennis sports for LUVAS students was organized in which a total of seven teams participated. The tournament was inaugurated on March 1, 2016 by Dr Gurdial Singh, Dean, COVS. Dr Pradeep Singh, Registrar, LUVAS gave away the prizes to the winners.

Gold Medals for Excellence in Academic and Research

On the occasion of first convocation of LUVAS, 21 students were awarded gold medals for excellence in academic and research activities during 2011-15. Winners included Vikas Rana, Sunaina, Snehil Gupta, Jitender Kumar and Sumit Sardana for Dr. D. P. Banerjee Gold Medal, Anu Kumari, Sunil Kumar and Snehil Gupta

for Dr. B. D. Bahl Gold Medal, Anu Kumari, Sunaina, Snehil Gupta, Komal and Sumit Sardana for Prof. P. K. Dwarkanath Gold Medal, Dr. Kaushlesh Ranjan, Dr. Jitender Yadav and Dr. Sushil Mukul Roy for Dr. R.N. Srivastava Gold Medal, Anu Kumari, Sunaina, Snehil Gupta, Komal and Vaibhav for University Gold Medal.

Winners with VC and Officers of LUVAS

Golden Performance by LUVAS Cadets

Four cadets namely Naveen, Ritu, Priyanka and Ankit of

Haryana R &V Sqd. NCC, LUVAS won four medals and two trophies

for their excellent performance on Republic Day Camp (RDC-2016)

at Delhi. Miss Ritu, student of LUVAS won three medals including

gold, silver and bronze each as well as Best Rider girl Trophy. All

these cadets were facilitated by His Excellency Sh. Kaptan Singh

Solanki, Governor of Haryana at Raj Bhawan Chandigarh.

Maj Gen (Dr.) Shri Kant VC, LUVAS also congratulated them for

bringing laurel to the University and facilitated them. On this

occasion Unit Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Shitiz Mittal and Officers

of the University were also present.

University BVSc & AH and VLDD Students Visited Parliament

A group of 106 B.VSc. & A.H. and 102 VLDD students visited the

parliament in the month of March, 2016 to see live proceedings of

the parliament (Lok Sabha) on courtesy of Hon'ble Member of

Parliament of Hisar Sh. Dushyant Chautala . Along with the students

LUVAS students participated in 16th All India Inter-Agricultural University Sports and Game Meet - 2015-16, organized by Tamil Nadu Agril. University, Coimbatore from February 22-26, 2016.

LUVAS team also participated in 16th All India State Inter-Agricultural Universities Youth Festival held at Orissa University of Agriculture & Technology, Bhubaneshwar from February1-4, 2016.

MiscellaneousVisit of VCI Team

A three member's team of Veterinary Council of India (VCI) visited LUVAS from February 9-11, 2016. Dr. Vaishwaraj Awati, Prof. & Head, Bidar Veterinary University, Karnataka, Dr. M.R. Sashendranath Veterinary University, Kerala and Dr. R.P. Pandey, DUVASU, Mathura were members of the team. During the visit, the team inspected the facilities available for teaching and research, availability of technical manpower including the teachers, space for conducting practical and instruments available. The team met Maj Gen (Dr.) Shri Kant, Vice Chancellor LUVAS and were briefed regarding different research schemes and teaching activities going on in the university. He also informed them regarding some of future plans including admission of students in College of Dairy Science and Technology in the coming session and appointment of new faculty members and other non- teaching staff.

New Year Day Celebration

LUVAS celebrated the New Year 2016 with Hawan Ceremony at the university campus. The Hawan ceremony was organized by non-teaching organization of LUVAS. The holy ritual was graced by the presence of Worthy Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Director of Research, Director of Extension Education, Dean COVS, Dean PGS, Director HRM, Director Student Welfare, Faculty and non-teaching staff. On this occasion, Vice-Chancellor, LUVAS wished all the members and their families a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year ahead.

Department of Veterinary Pathology, LUVAS conducted a training programme on “Postmortem Examination, Dispatch of

Specimen and Pathological Techniques with Special Reference to Immunological Diseases” from February 25-29, 2016. A total of twenty veterinarians of State Animal Husbandry Department, Haryana attended this training.

Advanced Faculty Training

Department of Veterinary Microbiology, LUVAS conducted 28th ICAR Centre of Advanced Faculty Training on “Development of Validated Diagnostic Assays and Accreditation of Diagnostic Laboratories” which was inaugurated on February 3, 2016 by Dr. Ravindra Sharma, Director of Research, LUVAS, Hisar. In the valedictory function on February 23, 2016, Maj Gen (Dr) Shri Kant, Vice-Chancellor, Chief Guest congratulated the 21 trainees (3 female and 18 male participants) from 8 different states of India. He gave away the certificates and emphasized the need of setting up of accredited veterinary laboratories in the country so that no trade barriers could be imposed on the international trade of livestock and their products. He said that accreditation of veterinary diagnostic laboratories is the need of the hour.

Prof. Peter Martens visited LUVAS

Prof. Peter Mertens , a world renowned virologists in the field of

Arobovirus research, and is currently research Leader of the

Arbovirus Molecular Research Group and Head of The Pirbight

Institute's Vector borne viral disease programme visited LUVAS on

February19, 2016. He delivered a talk on “Virus Variation,

Taxonomy, Nomenclature and Classification”. He discussed in

details about need of classification, systems of nomenclature for

new viruses including Baltimore classification.

On this occasion Maj Gen (Dr) Shri Kant Vice-Chancellor ,

LUVAS expressed the hope that MOU with The Pirbright Institute in

place, there will be exchange of scientists and students between the

institutes and also more collaborated research projects on animal

health will be started. Large number of students as well as faculty

members of LUVAS and of the Institutes including CIRB, NRCE

Hisar was also present in this deliberation.

interacted with a livestock owner who is promoting Haryana cows.
