Last week the PSNI’sHistorical Enquiries Team(HET) released its report intothe investigation into theslaughter o 10 Protestant workmen on the KingsmillsRoad, near Bessbrook, in1976.
The HET report brushedaside all excuses that the IRA had not been responsible andsaid the murders had been“pure sectarianism” and“appalling savagery” whichhad been planned or some
considerable time beorebeing carried out.

FRESH trouble erupted ineast Belast last night, asrival gangs o loyalists andrepublicans converged atthe scene o Monday night’sserious violence.
Masked youths attacked
police landrovers with bricks,bottles and petrol bombs asthe PSNI attempted to quellthe rising tensions in thelower Newtownards Roadarea.
While early reportsindicated that the violence was not on the scale o theprevious night – when 11gunshots were fred, leavingtwo men injured – thereare ears that the sectarianclashes will continue overthe coming days and nights.Police advised the public toavoid the area.
Speaking to the News Letterlast night, local community worker Jim Wilson said aheavy police presence inthe area “appeared to havebrought some control”.

‘Gardai in pay of top republican’MURDERED senior RUC ofcerHarry Breen believed a Dundalkpoliceman was in cahoots withthe IRA, an inquiry in Dublinheard yesterday.
The dramatic evidence wasgiven by Alan Mains, a ormerRUC ofcer who was Mr Breen’ssta ofcer, at a probe into claimso garda/IRA collusion.
Mr Mains, who retired rom thePSNI as a superintendent in 2007,also said that there were a number
o garda ofcers in Dundalk onthe payroll o republican andalleged smuggler Thomas ‘Slab’Murphy.
The ex-ofcer said he was nev-er interviewed by garda investi-gating the 1989 IRA murders o chie supt Breen and supt Bob
Buchanan.Mr Mains said that on the day
o the IRA murders – March 20– Mr Breen had told him that he
was concerned about gardai onMr Murphy’s payroll, including adetective sergeant he named.
