ACTIVITIES REPORT by Laura Wratten

I hope everyone’s holidays went well and you were all able to spend some time with your loved ones!

This year we are celebrating occupations. We will be featuring a different occupation monthly and inviting guests from the community in to speak. We are so excited for the involvement of our local community members, to learn all about what they do for a living and the role that they play in our town!

This month, we are celebrating small business owners, so make sure to stop by the main dining room on Friday the 13th at 2:00 p.m. as we welcome Roc Langone, owner of Roc‐Star Ice Cream. He will be sharing the ins and outs of his business and giving us the “inside scoop”!

We will also be celebrating another local business owner, Tom Morgan, owner of Morgan’s Hardware located on Main Street, on Friday the 20th

at 2:00 p.m. Come and find out the history of this local landmark and the generations who have kept it going!

Other activities of interest include entertainment by Kyle Ossont, Paul Ryder, Ed Vollmer, and Melissa Clark. Picker Art Gallery returns on the 10th with brand new pieces to discuss straight from the campus of Colgate.

Hi, Everyone! We just wanted to put a quick note in regarding our security systems here at the nursing home. Quality care and safety are our top priorities for all of our residents, visitors and staff members. We continue to maintain our camera security systems to include the main entryways, the parking lots and each resident hallway. We utilize the system for quality assurance purposes. If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding the security ofour facility, please feel free to contact me.

CHURCH SCHEDULE

Catholic Mass is held every Friday at 10:00 a.m. with either Father Kelly or Father Carey.

Catholic Communion will be offered on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. when available.

January 1 ‐ Birth Anniversary of Betsy Ross (1752‐1836) ‐ Ross was known as an excellent seamstress, and flags were one of her specialties. She is credited with stitching together the first “stars and stripes” from a design given to her by a committee including George Washington.

January 13 ‐ (1910) This is the anniversary of the first radio broadcast to the public in New York City. The first public radio broadcast consisted of performances of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci with the voices of Emmy Destinn, Riccardo Martin and Enrico Caruso, and other stars of the Metropolitan Opera.

January 17 ‐ Birth Anniversary of Benjamin Franklin (1706‐1790). Franklin was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, musician, inventor, satirist, civic activist, statesman, abolitionist, diplomat and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. In his “spare time”, he invented lightning rods, bifocals, and the Franklin stove.

January 24 ‐ Full Moon ‐ The Colonial American names are winter moon and Yule moon. The Haida Indian name is younger moon, and the Ponca Indian name is snow thaws moon.

January 27 ‐ Birth Anniversary of Charles Ludwidge Dodgson (1832‐1898) ‐Dodgson, better known by his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll, was an English mathematician, Anglican clergyman, photographer, logician and author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Hello everyone, it’s now January 2017!!

A brand new year is ahead of us with 365 days to experience. Based on previous life experience, I am sure some days will be exceptionally great. Some will be uneventful, some will be happy, some will be sad or discouraging, but isn’t that what life is made of? A multitude of events and experiences to create our life.

Who is a part of our lives makes a big difference too. I guess that is why I have worked here for so long. Everyone who is a part of my life here, the residents, their families, my co‐workers, help create a positive impact on my life every day. The personal satisfaction I feel when I can be of service to someone makes me have a good day. So, my goal for the year is to focus on the positive, deal with the negative when it comes along, and hope that my interactions can help create a good day for someone else.

NEW YEAR’S TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD

Italy A sprig of mistletoe is hung over the front door to ensure good luck. At midnight, pots, pans, and dishes are flung out of open windows as a symbolic gesture of getting rid of the old to make way for the new.

Denmark The New Year is greeted with fireworks after midnight and people leap off chairs to “jump” into the new year.

It’s officially flu season!!! I am pleased to announce that currently over 90% of our staff have been vaccinated for the flu. In order to keep our residents safe, we encourage visitors who have not received the vaccine or are exhibiting cold symptoms to wear a mask. VOLUNTEER REPORT by Betty Barth

“Happy New Year to Everyone!!”

It doesn’t seem possible that it has been a whole year since I started as Volunteer Coordinator. I have been learning a lot with much left to learn, but the most enjoyable part is my time spent with the residents. They bring joy to us all every day.

We had a very busy December with many Christmas parties as well as activities like making Christmas placemats, Christmas cookies and other Christmas crafts. We spent a lot of time singing carols and enjoying the voices of others. Several shopping trips were taken so that the residents could pick out gifts for loved ones and friends.

The week before Christmas was spent in a “battle” between team departments all in the spirit of the holidays. The residents were able to enjoy cookies, hot chocolate, caroling, skits and beautiful holiday decorations. In the end, everyone won – both staff and residents!

Christmas day was spent with Santa delivering gifts and a wonderful dinner shared with family and friends. Thanks to all staff and volunteers who made this holiday season a joy for all of us. And remember, YOU, yes, you, can be a part of this at any time. Just contact the Activities department to learn how.

National Hot Tea Month Trivia

According to legend, a Chinese emperor, Shen Nong, accidentally discovered tea over 5,000 years ago when some dried leaves fell into his boiling drinking water.

After 725 A.D., tea seeds were brought to Japan by a Buddhist priest from China who had seen the value of tea in enhancing religious meditation. As a result, he is known as the “Father of Tea” in Japan. Tea was elevated to an art form resulting in the creation of the Japanese Tea Ceremony.

The first consignment of tea reached Europe in 1610, brought by the Dutch from China to Java and then to Holland. Initially the domain of the wealthy because of the high cost (over $100 per pound) by 1675 tea was available in common food shops throughout Holland.

By 1650, Peter Stuyvesant brought the first tea to America to the colonists in the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam (later New York). Settlers here were avid tea drinkers. Colonists took the habit of tea drinking with them to other parts of the world, such as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

The first tea used in England came from Dutch sources between 1652 and 1654. When Charles II married the Portuguese princess Catherine of Braganza, she introduced the pleasures of tea drinking to the English Court. Tea quickly proved popular enough to replace ale as the national drink of England.

The first mention of adding milk to tea came in 1680. During that time period, Dutch tavern owners would furnish guests with a portable tea set complete with a heating unit.

AROUND THE WORLD in January

January 6 (Iceland) ‐ Þrettándinn (the last day of Christmas) is celebrated with a family dinner and a bonfire referred to as “Alfabrenna”. The people of Iceland gather wood and sticks and other things weeks before and make a pile in the center of town. Everyone gathers to watch the bonfire and say goodbye to Christmas.

January 25 (Scotland) ‐ Robbie Burns’ Day ‐ Robert Burns was born on this day in 1759 in the town of Ayr. The son of a peasant farmer, he became the most famous Scottish poet and songwriter whose works spoke the language of the common folk. The day is typically celebrated with bagpipes, neeps and tatties (mashed turnips and creamed potatoes), haggis and, of course, whiskey, Scotland’s “water of life”. Donning kilt and sporran, a piper enters the room followed by the bearer of the haggis.
