ACTIVITIES/VOLUNTEER REPORT by Laura Wratten

Happy Thanksgiving!! I hope everyone’s holiday meal is delicious and that you are able to spend time with your families. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because of all the homemade food!!!!

Thank you to everyone who attended the Volunteer Luncheon. It was a wonderful turnout and I think that everyone really enjoyed themselves. I hope that all of our volunteers felt the appreciation that they deserve –they are such a vital part of this facility. Home is where the heart is, and our volunteers are the heart that makes this place a home. Thank you!!

This month is full of fun activities including an outing to Big Lots, entertainment by Paul Ryder, Ed Vollmer, and the Remnant Singers. We will also be attending the Veterans Ceremony at the elementary school, which is wonderful – the staff and students do a GREAT job!

On Friday, November 11th in the evening, we will having our own annual Veterans Day Ceremony – I encourage all to attend, it is absolutely amazing and will touch your heart. It is something that I look forward to every year.

CHURCH SCHEDULE

Catholic Mass is held every Friday at 10:00 a.m. with either Father Kelly or Father Carey.

Catholic Communion will be offered on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. when available.

Rosary will be held on Tuesday afternoon, November 1st, at 1:15 p.m. in the Dining Room.

Protestant Church will be held on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

SOCIAL SERVICE NEWS From the desk of Colleen Sullivan‐Marris

According to my calculations, we have two more months left in this year. How could we have gone from New Year’s Day to November so quickly?!

My Dad turns 85 this month, so we are having a celebration on November 13th in his honor. My son from Nashville will be home. I am very excited to be thinking about him being here to visit for a week.

This month is also Veterans Day. I am also pleased that this home and our community does so much to recognize our veterans. Long after their active service to our country, veterans continue to dedicate their time and other skills to fund many community events and to help others. Many veterans and their families are members of VFW’s, American Legion Posts and their auxiliaries. Without their generosity, there would be many gaps in our community events. Be sure to thank these people when you encounter them. Many like to share stories about their lives, both personally and service‐related.

Kudos to all the men and women here at Waterville Residential Care Center who have defended our nation. Kudos to my niece and nephew who are actively serving in the United States Army.

Veterans Day was proclaimed in 1919 to commemorate the termination of World War I on November 11, 1918. Fighting stopped at 11 a.m., the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. On the first anniversary of the truce, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation eulogizing fallen Allied soldiers and referring to November 11th as Armistice Day.

In 1954, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veteran service organizations, amended the Act of 1893 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans". With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11th, regardless of what day of the week it falls on and regardless of the Uniform Holiday Bill which was signed on June 28, 1968 ensuring three‐day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays. This observance of Veterans Day not only preserves the historical significance of the day, but focuses attention on the important purpose of this day; a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

In the 1920’s, many of the Macy’s department store employees were first‐generation immigrants. Proud of their new American heritage, they wanted to celebrate Thanksgiving with the type offestival their parents had loved in Europe. The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was in 1924. The employees marched from 145th St. to 34th St. dressed in colorful costumes. There were floats, professional bands, and 25 animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo. Santa Claus was at the 34th St. store entrance. The audience numbered over a quarter of a million. The last appearance of live animals was in the 1926 parade. The first large balloon was Felix the Cat who made his debut in the 1927 parade.
