A Stewardship Reflection

Proclaiming the Gospel of Peace

Recently our choir shared with us a beautiful anthem entitled, “Peace, Like Welcome Rain.” The words

express so well our church’s ministry theme to “Proclaim the Gospel of Peace.”

Let peace, like welcome rain, flow freely down, flow freely down

To heal this dry, parched land.

Come soothe the summer’s wounded soul and flood the burning fears we hold with truth and hope,

and deeper understanding, deeper understanding.

Let peace, like welcome rain, flow freely down, for all are thirsty here.

Let brotherhood be kindled here; let truth, not anger, make us strong.

Let word and deed be fed by care, for the same needs bind us all.

Let courage rise, let hearts be bold, let words of hatred speak no more;

Then, how the rains of peace will come with life and strength for the dreams we’ve begun,

O give us hope, O give us hope.

This is a powerful prayer for our time and reflects our congregation’s desire to minister with the grace and

love of Jesus Christ to a hurting and confused world. More than ever, we Disciples of Christ are called to

“proclaim the gospel of peace” and to let God’s peace, like welcome rain, flow freely down.

Do you ever just listen to the rain? It is a powerful thing to witness as showers from heaven pour down on

dry, parched land. Sometimes a rainstorm will come up quickly. Everything is bright and sunny, but

before you know it, you’re standing there drenched. Other times, though, it starts with a drop here and a

drip there, and the pitter-patter slowly grows to a steady soaking rain.

Our relationship with God can be the same way. Sometimes when we least expect it, God is coming

through for us in a mighty way. But at other times, we need to look more closely to see the

raindrops- God’s constant presence around us that grows as we become more aware.

Our special stewardship emphasis is a time when we become more aware of God’s life-giving peace. We

respond with generosity and gratitude for all the blessings that have rained upon us. It is our desire to

share these blessings with others who are also thirsting for God’s peace.

November 12 is the Sunday that we will celebrate our support for Proclaiming the Gospel of Peace. Please

plan to be with us on this special day.

concession stand at the UA Bear Scare a

huge success! A total of $853.94 was raised

which supported the following programs:

Camp Scholarship fund ($163.50), Youth

Mission Trip ($345.22) and Week of Com-

passion/Hurricane Relief ($345.22). A

special thanks is extended to Pastor Jeff for

being the ‘super shopper’ and to Chris and

spirit of NWCC with the UA community!

Child Caregiver

A special thank you of appreciation is expressed to Michelle Gibson for her

service as our child caregiver over the last few years. Michelle has resigned her

NWCC Foundation

Over the years, our NWCC Foundation has positively

affected many lives. As part of our efforts to communicate

the good works of this very special group, we have asked

several of our beneficiaries to share their unique stories…

Dear Northwest Christian Foundation.

I was asked what impact the Foundation has had

on my life and on the lives of those around me.

Through the extravagant generosity of the

Foundation, I am now a fully licensed professional

counselor having completed my coursework at

Methodist Theological Seminary and passing the

National Counselors Examination in April of

2016. I currently work at North Community

Counseling, listening to people who desperately

need to be heard. I have a small caseload of my own

clients dealing with both mental health and some

chemical dependency issues or both. I spend the

majority of my day completing intake

assessments and determining diagnosis and best

care for people from all walks of life and ages

from as young as 13 to as mature as 86. I have

found my calling and am using my God-given gifts.

I will never forget the Sunday morning that

Connie Loynachan asked me after the early

morning service if I had considered seminary and

that the Foundation was looking for people to

support as they considered their mission in life.

It has completely altered my life.

Phillipians 4: 17-20 It is not that I want to receive the

gift. I want you to get the pay that is coming to you

later. I have everything I need and more than enough.

I am taken care of because Epaphroditus brought your

gift. It is a sweet gift. It is a gift that cost you

something. It is the kind of gift God is so pleased with.

And my God will give you everything you need because

of His great riches in Christ Jesus. Now may our God

and Father be honored forever. Let it be so.

Paul is quite clear that the giving of money to support

God’s Kingdom is a form of worship. When we give of

our financial resources to support our church, it is not

just to get the bills paid or to accomplish good works.

It is part of our spiritual journey with God.

Yes, the bills get paid and outreach happens, but passing

the offering plate is not a fund-raising ritual. It is an

opportunity to sacrifice something of value to us

(money) and give it to God as an act of devotion.

This month we officially conclude our Covenant season,

where we have made a pledge about our stewardship for

the coming year. Thank God for the opportunity to

express our love for God and others.

Yours in Christ,

Carla Nuenke

Stewardship Chair

. Thanksgiving Special

Offering

Many of us are aware today’s skyrocketing costs of higher education. In recent years, stu-

dent debt has surpassed credit card debt in terms of total debt owed by Americans.

Our Disciples colleges and universities, and our theological institutions continue to work at pro-viding quality education, keeping costs down,

and providing funding to assist Disciples students and others.

As Disciples, we recognize how important higher education is. Over 50,000 students at-

tend our fourteen Disciples related colleges and universities or seven seminaries and divinity houses. And in the past twelve

months, over 12,000 students have graduated from these fine schools.

The work of educating and forming students in-tellectually, emotionally, spiritually and physi-

cally continues.

Our gifts to the Thanksgiving offering help sup-port the work of our institutions of higher learn-ing in many ways: financially supporting Disci-ples related schools, providing undergraduate

scholarships and support for spiritual life offices, and providing scholarships and support for

those pursuing theological education.

May we please give generously to support this important work. The offering will be received on November 12th and 19th. Our goal for this

offering is $500. Thank you!

Watch a FREE Live Stream of Dave Ramsey’s Smart Money Event in our sanctuary. Over the last 25 years, millions of lives have been changed through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace

University. On Tuesday, November 7th at 8pm, Dave will be live

streaming his Smart Money event to churches and Financial Peace University classes across the country. We are excited to announce that we will be a host site for this event.

The best part? It’s absolutely free for you to attend! As Dave and Rachel Cruze take the stage in Phoenix, and we will stream the event in

real time. We’d love for you to join us and learn the steps you and your family can take to live like no one else.

We will again be coordinating with Boulevard

Community Christmas Packages, by providing

400 boxes of pasta. Most packages get two

boxes, so 2 lb pasta boxes can also be

donated. The pasta needs to be collected

by 12/10/2017, so we will start collecting

November 12. It also fun to participate in the

preparation and delivery, and home baked

cookies are also received until 12/15/2017 at

Boulevard Presbyterian. Around 300 Families

referred from NSI, NNEMAP, COMPASS,

Syntero, and Hilltop receive the packages of food

for a holiday meal, cookies, and gifts!

Delivery - Sunday, 12/17/17 (12:30pm - 2:00pm)

Packing of the Food Boxes - Saturday,

12/16/17 (9:30am - 11am)
