The website of Fernheath Play Association, which is the onlyfully inclusive play and respite centre in the Bournemouth area. This allows all the children who attend to interact and engage inimaginative play. They cater for both children who have adisability and those who do not and we offer a fully supervisedservice. In recent times they have seen more and more referralsfrom local councils for their I.C.A.N. Play and Take A Breakrespite programmes and this has allowed them to greatlyincrease their provision for disabled children. They are always inneed of charitable donations in order to help them keep up theirgreat work.

    Conor visits St Aldhelms Academy

Pupils of St. Aldhelms Academy show Conor the progress theyare making designing clocks in their engineering class.

Last Friday Conor paid a visit to St Aldhelms Academy in Rossmore.

This new academy has replaced Rossmore Community College andits sponsors and trust board have worked extremely hard withstudents and staff to ensure a first class education for all localchildren.Located in an area which suffers from relatively high unemploymentand poverty, the Adademy is striving to improve standards ofacademic education and strong discipline, as well as providingoutreach and community engagement to raise aspiration among localyoung people.Conor is extremely pleased to be able to show his support to theAcademy and has already worked to secure important funding for there-build of some of the buildings.Commenting, Conor said, I particularly enjoyed meeting some of the

pupils and seeing the work they are doing this term.Having secured the funding for their new buildings, I look forward to

plans coming forward and the physical building process beginning assoon as possible. With the money secure, these children need anddeserve the new buildings and facilities for their education.

    Combat Stress Anti Stigma campaign

Conor speaking at the launch of the Combat Stress charitysAnti Stigma campaign.

Last week Conor joined veterans, fellow MPs and the media inWestminster to launch the Combat Stress Anti Stigma campaign. Thecampaign seeks to battle the stigma of psychological disorders thatprevents hundreds of veterans from seeking help.Combat Stress is the UKs leading charity specialising in the treatmentof Veterans mental health. In a recent survey carried out by thecharity, 81% of Veterans who responded revealed that they feelashamed or embarrassed about their mental ill-health. The fear ofstigma and discrimination means that more than one in three of thosepeople dont even feel able to tell their families about their problems.Conor was one of the key organisers of the event which was held inthe State Rooms of Speakers House and the occasion coincided withthe Governments own initiative to support troops suffering from the

long-term effects of the mental stress of war. The Ministry of Defencelaunched a parallel Dont bottle it up Campaign to encourage thoseveterans suffering mental health problems to come forward.Conor is keen to stress the importance of this issue since a significantminority of Service men and women suffer from mental ill-health as aresult of their experiences and on average veterans wait 13.1 yearsbetween leaving the Armed Forces and seeking help from CombatStress. This delay often results in their mental health needs becoming worse.Research suggests that of the 191,000 personnel who have served inIraq and Afghanistan, about 7,600 people (4%) could develop PostTraumatic Stress Disorder and another 37,600 people (19.7%) may bebattling other debilitating mental health problems, such as depression, mood disorders and anxiety. However, with the help of charities such as Combat Stress andGovernment programs such as Dont Bottle it Up, over 4,600Veterans are currently receiving support through the charitys UK-widenetwork of multidisciplinary Community Programs.Within Dorset there are 44 Veterans currently seeking help fromCombat Stress Outreach teams who provide clinical care and welfaresupport at a community level.

Commenting after the event Conor said: It is so important that thestigma surrounding mental health has been brought to the forefronttoday. Many of our brave service men and women who have fought,or continue to fight, suffer from mental ill health. Without a diagnosis, appropriate treatment or support, Veterans can feel isolated, angryand even suicidal.

The Anti Stigma campaign is doing a great job at raising awarenessto our brave ex-Service men and women, and their families andfriends, so that they seek treatment for their mental wounds.

launch of their Anti Stigma campaign in Westminster.

I am lookingforward to the opportunity of working alongside local residents whoregularly offer their time to make a difference in our local community.Volunteering gives us the opportunity to give back to our communityand to support people facing social or economic difficulties. I amfortunate in my work to meet so many of the people who by givinggenerously of their own time make a real difference to our localcommunity.CSV Make a Difference Day ambassador, Pete Waterman, saysRachel and I are encouraging MPs and people of all ages to take partin CSV Make a Difference Day to combat feelings of isolation, loneliness and anxiety, as well as making local communities ahappier, more welcoming place.Get to know your neighbours, make friends, get fit and transform the

place where you live into a beautiful haven. Lift community spirits byorganising a garden makeover, Halloween street party or bingoevening at a homeless shelter, nursing home or hospital ward. Evensimple changes like reporting faulty street lights can have a positiveimpact in strengthening communities.CSV Make a Difference Day, is the UKs biggest single day of

volunteering on Saturday 29th October 2011 with events taking place

a week either side. This year the focus is isolation and loneliness. pay more, work longer and get less for our pensions. The unionbelieves the government has not accounted for the costs of thechanges or their unfairness to firefighters.Whilst expressing great admiration for the important and oftendangerous work firefighters do, he stressed that the economic
