O n the 11th February 2011, Her Excellency the Australian Am- bassador to Nepal Ms Susan Grace visited Gurkhas Insti- tute of Technology in Mel- bourne. The purpose of the meeting was to address issues like access to primary educa- tion, improving basic health outcomes, strengthening gov- ernance and reducing poverty. It was acknowledged in the program that the two-way merchandise trade between our countries in 2007-08 that totaled AUD $22 million. There also has been a signifi- cant increase in the number of student from Nepal come to Australia to pursue higher studies. The request to give oppor- tunity to more students to pursue their higher studies through scholarships to im- prove on literacy rate through the AUSAID was made. Ms Susan Grace reciprocated the issue raised by Nepali students who are here under the private funding program about the strict rules imple- ment for visa processing for Nepali students by saying that she was aware of the situation and that she was interested vividly in discussing the is- sue with the Australian Gov- ernment about finding ways to improve the situation. She expressed her entire gratitude for the effort that has been put by a lot of Nepalese citizens to run projects to improve the health and well being of peo- ple of Nepal. The Ambassador was posi- tive about the possibilities to further strengthen the re- lationships between the two countries. The program was very inter- active and productive. The participants were very pleased to be given the opportunity to participate in such program and appreciated the consulate office in Melbourne for orga- nizing this very important and valuable program.
