High school graduates and college and university students with Jersey backgrounds are eligible to apply for 10 scholarships awarded annually by The American Jersey Cattle Club. The basis for selecting the recipients will be need, character, scholastic excellence, and other qualifications commonly used as criteria for the awarding of scholarships for study at an ac- credited college or university. There are four Jack C. Nisbet Scholarships awarded annually. Entries for these scholarships are accepted from those Jersey youths who are entered in the previous year's National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest (announced during the current year). Students who are enrolled in college or those who have completed high school and are ready to enter a college or university are eligible to apply for one of three William A. Russell Scholarships awarded annually by the AJCC. Applicants must have an interest in or back- ground with Jerseys. Two V. L. Peterson Scholarships are awarded each year to students who have completed at least one year of college. Any Jersey junior meeting that qualification may apply for these scholarships. The Paul Jackson Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to one Jersey junior who has completed at least one year of college. All applications for scholarships are due in the AJCC office by July 1. • The Department of Animal Sciences, University of Illinois, is accepting applications for a tenure-track anaerobic microbiologist (open rank) with responsibilities in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and obtain funds for a strong research program concerning microbes in the gastrointestinal tract of domestic animals, to direct M.S. and Ph.D. students, to participate in the teaching program, and to cooperate with faculty in related areas of the animal sciences. A Ph.D. in microbiology or a related area, with specialization in anaerobic microbiology, and strong background and training in biochemistry, physiology, metabolism, ecology, and/or mo- lecular biology of microbes in the gastro- intestinal tract is required. Applications should be received by September 1, 1987 to ensure full consideration but may be submitted until a suitable candidate is found. • Kansas State University seeks applicants for an assistant professor of animal breeding position (70% teaching, 30% research) in the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry.

A Ph.D. in animal science (animal breeding) with emphasis on quantitative and population genetics and statistics is required. The applicant must be able and willing to teach both under- graduate and graduate level courses. The successful applicant will be expected to develop a theoretical and applied research program and to interact with the livestock industry and extension programs. Qualifications include an earned doctorate in animal science or a closely related field and a record of achieve- ment in research, education, or extension commensurate with a professorial appointment. • The Quality Milk Promotion Services/New York State Mastitis Control Program, New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University is recruiting for a research associate. Qualifications include a doctoral degree in microbiology or preventive medicine with strong emphasis on microbiology. Ap- plicants should have demonstrated experience in research skills in a related area evidenced by

• The Dairy Science Department, Mississippi State University, is accepting applications for a dairy foods scientist. This is a tenure-track posit ion for an assistant or associate professor with 30% teaching and 70% research appoint- ment. The candidate will be expected to part icipate in an ongoing research program as related to the Southeast Dairy Foods Re- search Center. Qualifications include a back- ground in dairy manufacturing/foods and a Ph.D. in dairy or food science with emphasis on dairy chemistry or dairy product processing. The Department operates a modern, semi- commercial processing plant with capability for processing and research for fluid products, hard cheeses, cottage cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and butter. Special equipment includes UF, UHT, Crepaco homogenizer/pasteurizer system, experimental cheese vats, plus product ion scale equipment for these products. The de- par tment has a strong graduate program in dairy foods with 20 students enrolled in the Master of Science and Ph.D. programs. Ap- plications must be received by August 20, 1987. Individuals should have strong background in biochemistry, protein chemistry/enzymology, or cell/molecular bi- ology and be capable of establishing an extra- murally funded basic research program with applications to food systems. Applicant must possess Ph.D. ; postdoctoral experience is highly desirable. Candidates are expected to teach in area of expertise and interact with individuals in areas of established departmental strength such as muscle biology, lipid oxidation, dairy chemistry, microbiology, food toxicology, nutri t ion, and food engineering.
