THE UK’S SATELLITE LAUNCH SOLUTION

LEADING HORIZONTAL SPACE LAUNCH COMPANY, VIRGIN ORBIT, IS BRINGING ITS $1BILLION TECHNOLOGY TO CORNWALL

Page 3: NEWQUAY CAMBORNE, POOL PENZANCE & REDRUTH Hi 9 Cornwall’s · Satellites launched from Cornwall will be used for Earth Observation, monitoring pollution, bringing internet to remote

The UK currently builds a large majority of the world’s small satellites, but has nowhere to launch them

The global launch market is worth c.£10b over the next decade

Satellites are sent overseas at great expense

UKSA, Virgin Orbit and Cornwall will offer horizontal launch from Europe for the first time, enabling UK built satellites to finally access space

Using an existing airport, Cornwall Airport Newquay, with a modified Boeing 747, the partnership can offer launch at a lower cost

Satellites launched from Cornwall will be used for Earth Observation, monitoring pollution, bringing internet to remote areas, national security and tracking illegal fishing (to name a few!)

Spaceport Cornwall will act as a catalyst, attracting more high-value companies from all sectors into Cornwall

Industry leaders like Virgin Orbit are using new technologies to lower the cost of accessing space

150 direct jobs and 282 indirect jobs

£200m of GVA in the next 5 years

Investment into Cornwall Airport Newquay to grow all operations

Extensive supply chain opportunities

An opportunity to inspire a generation of school children into STEM careers

Attract further inward investment

Cornwall will take a global lead in sustainable space launch

Is a runway extension required? No runway extension is required to operate Virgin Orbit

Is a new hangar or terminal being built? No new hangar or terminal is planned, exisiting facilites will be upgraded

Will existing business be displaced? No existing businesses will be displaced. The Virgin system will be integrated with airport operations

What type of fuel will be used? Non-exotic fuels will be used (standard jet fuel, kerosene and liquid oxygen)

INFRASTRUCTURE

Will there be frequent launches from Cornwall? Low Frequency : minimum 1, maximum 8 launches by year 5

FREQUENCY

Will Rockets launch vertically? No. Rockets will be launched off a modified aircraft (horizontal launch)

Will Rockets launch direct from Cornwall? No. The rockets will be deployed at 35,000 feet about 300-500 miles off the coast

Is the system reusable? The carrier system is completely reusable

LAUNCH

Does the project consider the Climate Change Emergency? Yes. The Spaceport will carry out a full Environmental Impact Assessment. Early research shows that spaceport activities will account for only 1% of annual carbon emissions from the airport.

A carbon offset programme is being designed to be carbon net positive, which will include a full mitigation plan

ENVIRONMENT

Will Tourists be travelling into space from Cornwall? There are no current plans for human spaceflight from Cornwall

TOURISTS

Will Cornwall Council be directly investing in Virgin? No, the Council funding will be an investment in airport infrastructure that can be used for other activities. For example, upgrading the runway lighting to efficient LEDs

Will the Council investment take money away from NHS and schools? No. The Council will use separate capital investment for this project, gaining future commercial revenues from Spaceport which can be reinvested into public services
