read a lot of used and out-of-print books, and recently I was halfway through read-

ing one when a not-very-good photo slippedout from between two pages. At first I didnt

see anything except blue sky and a smidgen of aroof line at the bottom of the photo. Upon closerinspection, the focal point of the image was appar-ently a small cross that nearly disappeared againstthe pale blue of the sky.

Now who took that photo? I wondered. Howdid it end up in the book I was reading?

Who even knows how many hands that oldbook passed through before it arrived at my house, and yet I wonder if the photo was missed by theone who originally took it.

Photographs are such personal things, and inthis issue we once again are featuring the winnersof our annual Photo Contest. I love it when theentries start rolling in to the office each year. Itsfun to choose my favorites and see if the judgeschoices mirror mine.

I hope its not just my imagination, but it doesseem that along with cameras and digital photog-raphy getting better and easier to use, our every-day photos are improving immensely. TheChristmas cards I received last year featured fami-ly photography that once would have required astudio visit to achieve. Unlike ordinary cards, theones featuring photography get saved from year to

year because Im so impressedwith the photos on them.

The judges of this years photocontest were impressed withCowetans wide-ranging entries. Our judges were Bob Fraley, anaward-winning Newnan Times-Herald/Newnan-Coweta Magazinephotographer; Staff Writer JohnWinters, whose resume includes work as aWashington, D.C. bureau chief, publisher of anewspaper in Alaska, general manager of a news-paper in Nebraska, and finally director of a nation-al news service; and Susan West, who has wonnumerous awards in Times-Herald photo contestsover the years.

Bob Fraley noted, We had many wonderfulentries this year. It was terribly difficult to judgethis year's contest. If you didn't place this year, don't give up! Try again next year!

Thats good advice for photographyand forlife.

    Warmly,

    Angela McRae, [email protected]

JUDGES COMMENTS: Great photo! The composition is near perfect andthe ship in the background is the icing on the cake. The colors are outstand-ing. Makes me want to be there. This photo would definitely hang on a wallin my house. Great color and contrast. The tall sailing vessel in the back-ground was an excellent capture to go along with the water spouting up.This picture was just breathtaking. I wanted to be able to walk right into theimage and be on this beach.

Great composition and beautiful subject.Being there at the perfect time of day to capture the rays of themorning sun and the fall colors is quite challenging and youpulled it off!

JUDGES COMMENTS: Impressed with the details in this image. The facial expression alone was worth it. Exactly what ishe/she/it looking at? Terrific shot of a not-so-pretty subject! Mother nature's crea-tures are fascinating and hard to photograph, and this one defi-nitely has its eyes on the photographer.

  • This is the world of Anne Berry, whose beautiful painterly photographsin black and white captivate theviewer and make him wonder whatthe animals are thinking. She is basedin Newnan but travels the worldseeking out small zoos andphotographing their inhabitants. Herheart is truly with her subjects, and itshows in her work.

Growing up in Atlanta, Anneand her mother would visit the zoofrequently, and it was during thistime that she came to love andunderstand the animals and theirkeepers. After college she taughtEnglish Literature but finally found acamera in her hands. She has a fineart background, but her photographyis largely self-taught. She finds oldlenses and has them retrofitted towork with modern digital cameras. This combination gives her work agothic beauty that stays with theviewer after hes turned away.

She chose to photograph animalsto get the viewer to really beginthinking about them. Anne wantsthose who see her work to considerthe animals needs, wants andthoughts. Wildlife conservation is

Anne wishes for all wildlife to beout in the wild but admits that inmany situations, there is no safehabitat for them to live in that meetsall their needs. Zoos have greatlyimproved in recent years. So hasunderstanding of the social andphysical needs of the animals. Shecurrently seeks out smaller zoos, asthe animals are more likely to interactwith visitors and be more accustomedto the presence of humans.

Shes observed the differencesbetween big modern zoos like ZooAtlanta and the smaller zoos overseas.A zoo in Mumbai, for example, isvery small. This zoo has a very low

Anne said shecould have just reached out andtouched him. Just then a keeper witha wheelbarrow full of greens cameover and fed the hippo over the wall, petting him and talking to him as ifhe were a horse. She went to the nextenclosure where rhesus monkeys wererunning in and out of their cage.

They surrounded her and beganfussing. The keeper shooed themaway and then took her on a tourand introduced her to his charges.

Anne also recalls a zoo in Russiawhere she photographed a manhelping his child stand on the wall tosee the lions, which were looking atthe child rather hopefully. There wasa sign nearby. She later asked a friendwhat the sign said and was told thegist of it was, If you fall in, youllprobably die.

day, is of a senior that wanted towear his tux from his senior formalsuntucked, bowtie untied, indowntown Newnan. The end resultwas perfection in my eyes.

She and her husband Drew havefour children (Ellexa, 14, Jalen, 12,Jaxton, 8, and Ava, 6) and live inSummerGrove. Sara is always strivingto achieve work-life balance. As mybusiness has grown, and I was able tomove my studio out of my home, Isoon felt the need to separate mywork and home life. It was too easyto quickly run upstairs to the studiospace to check an e-mail and threehours later Id find myself stillworking! My family comes first.Because Sara wanted to grow herbusiness but wasnt willing to take onmore work each week, she brought inTeresa Collins as an associate

photographer. While her first real studio was

in Serenbe, Sara says, Having mystudio in Newnan is like cominghome after being away on anextended vacation. It just feels right.Although my space here is thesmallest studio space Ive been in, Ivefound that I actually dont need a lotof inside space. Most of my work isdone outside. Thats where I love toshooton location. DowntownNewnan is an amazing, eclecticcollection of locations. Within blocksof the square I have uncovered thebest little spots to capture images. There are fields, railroad tracks, oldbuildings you name it. Just thebest backdrops.

Bradleys medium is duct tape. In his hands, thesticky substance that has been used to repair

People dont believehow this got started, hesays, but Im surehaving fun.

Bradley grewup in GwinnettCounty and afterearning a

business degree from Georgia State, married his sweetheart, Cynthia. Forover two decades Bradley enjoyed asuccessful career as a high-tech andsoftware business consultant for

Laura, the oldest, wasdetermined to attend Auburn andduring her senior year at GwinnettsBrookwood High School, Bradleyasked her to research availablescholarships. He was stunned atwhat she found.

I saw that the Duck Tapecompany sponsored a contest calledStuck at Prom, says Laura. Youmade a prom dress from Duck Tape, sent in pictures and people voted fortheir favorite. The winner gotseveral thousand dollars. It lookedlike a good deal and I said, Dad,can you help with this?

Bradley had dropped big buckson a prom dress the previous yearand figured he had nothing to lose.

I thought if nothing else, ithad to be cheaper, he says.

    Not everyone shared Bradleysenthusiasm.

My mom thought we wereboth crazy, Laura says.

After I got into it, I thoughtmaybe she was right, Bradley says.It took almost three months tomake the dress. But we had anabsolute ball.

Since the family lived inGeorgia Bradley decided the gownshould pay homage to the statesmost famous fashionista, ScarlettOHara. In Gone With the Wind,Scarlett made a dress from draperies. The Duck Tape version was equallyeye-catching. And while it didntwin the contest, it was an absoluteprom night smash.

My friends loved it, Laurasays. Everybody wanted theirpicture made with it. It was themost fun I ever had.

When Laura went to collegeBradley thought his fling withduct tape fame was over. Thenone day Laura called and asked ifhe could make an AuburnUniversity logo from duct tape.

Laura was delighted. Shewasnt alone and soon askedBradley to make another one for afriend. He obliged. When sixmore orders followed, Bradleydecided to start charging for hiswork and a new art career wasborn. Bradley was quickly floodedwith requests to create logos, mascot images and other items fora host of colleges and professionalteams.

He was surprised that a guywith no art training did so well.

days of early America. He zigzagged prairies,

rivers and mountains topreach and teach, bury and marry, and share the Gospel with folksacross our young country. A faithfulhorse was his only companion andmeans of transportation.

Fast forward to 2012 and SenoiaUnited Methodist Church. Rev.Nathaniel Long is a modern-daycircuit rider with a twist. Instead of afaithful horse, he rides a HOG!

He zigzags town and country on his2009 Harley-Davidson Ultra ClassicMotorcycle. Reactions vary fromsmiles to stares to gasps and disbelief.Whatever the response, this preachernicknamed The Hog Father keeps onriding.

While serving Pine Log UnitedMethodist Church in Rydal, Georgia,Nathaniel pondered ways to raisemoney for Missions to Mexico. Whatabout a motorcycle rally? He visitedthe local Harley dealershipto ask their help.He

What is the old saying? Ifyou fall off a HOG, you shouldget right back into the saddle.

He did, and The Reverendand The Harley have been apopular duo since then.Nathaniel admits he has enduredchuckles from clergy colleaguesand disapproving glances from afew church members. None of thatmatters when he uses his much-deserved days off to travel new paths.

A recent day trip took Nathanielfrom Senoia to North CarolinasMaggie Valley, then to Blairsville,

Cleveland and home. He crossed theCherohala Skyway and carefullymaneuvered The Dragons Tail, astretch of roadway that packs 316curves in 11 miles. He once rode2,500 miles in 65 hours over 3 days

to New York, Canada, CapeHatteras and back to Georgia.Perhaps his favorite trip was4,822 miles westward to St.Louis, Kansas, Colorado, Utah,New Mexico and Texas. Hemarveled at Pikes Peak andcrossed the Continental Divideat least four different times. Onanother journey he sawdevastation caused by the April27, 2011 tornadoes here inGeorgia.

Nathaniel uses his bike forministry. He is a member of theChristian MotorcyclistsAssociation and a Harley groupwhere he meets people not

involved in church. He participatesin charity rides and helped escort theMoving Vietnam Wall to CowetaCounty and, later, CentennialOlympic Park.

doing, there is ministry to be done. Ilove to meet people and learn theirstories, Nathaniel relates.

Perhaps his greatest passion thesedays is Stop Hunger Now.Introduced to this program throughThe United Methodist Church,Nathaniel has become a strongadvocate for this internationalorganization that goes whereverhunger is present in the world.Obviously unable to deliver freshmeats and vegetables globally, StopHunger Now has developed a uniqueblend of rice, soy protein, vitaminsand dehydrated vegetables. High innutritional value, this mixture isplaced into packets distributedwherever hunger existsdevelopingcountries, orphanages, schools oremergency situations. NathanielsHarley-Davidson displays StopHunger Now logos to help raise

awareness. Nathaniel asked to taste apacket for lunch one day. Thoughnot approved for use in the UnitedStates, he ate a meal and it wasnttoo bad. Though not exactly a juicyrib eye, it was tasty enough to garnerthe support of three other ministers(Dan Dixon, John Mattox and DavidBlackwood) who, along withNathaniel, lived completely on theStop Hunger Now recipe during Lent2011. Through their program 4 for40 (4 clergy for the 40 days ofLent), they raised awareness ofhunger around the world and invitedother churches to support theorganization.

According to Nathaniel, Thisexperience strengthened mydiscipline. Our 4 for 40 helpedother churches realize that millionsare dying of hunger. The logos on myHarley prompted folks to ask

questions and were a tool foreducation.

During the 40 days, Nathanielhappily lost 43 pounds. He remainedon the program for all but three days, taking a break only when his in-lawstook the family to Disney World!

The Circuit Riding Preacher hasno plans to forego his HOG anytime soon. His goal for 2012 is todrive to every Stop Hunger Nowwarehouse in the USA, seeking moreways to prevent people from going tobed hungry. Meanwhile, the bikeremains a conversation-starter. Itcarries Nathaniel long distances on agallon of gas. It de-stresses him andshows him hidden treasures off thebeaten path. It introduces him topeople he might not otherwise meet.

And if a group gathers aroundthe bike to hear a good sermon, allthe better! NCM

raised in our North Madison Avenue garden orthat of my Thomas grandparents in PleasantValley. In fall, my Pa Jim and his neighbors

gathered for a hog killin. Homemade lard, rendered from its excess fat, traveled to our cabinets tomake biscuits and cornbread; cracklings, such fine dregs, were my favorite residue.

Additionally, free range Rhode Island Reds gave eggsfor cakes; my grandmother churned buttermilk andpoured yellow globules into molds for homemade butter.Beulah, the cow, was a grand possession, as mygrandfather loved her fresh buttermilk poured overcornbread. If one travels to Spain, possiblythe most coveted reservation belongs

to restaurants that feature items thatlook like art. Most of them areproduced by molecular engineering, which requires expensive equipmentfor cooking sous vide, or preparingdishes to resemble pearls and foamwith liquid nitrogen. With the priceof dinner at $250 per person, minuswine, most of us will settle forcurrent darlings grits, sauted collardsor pork belly stateside.

While many of the dishes evokememories of the old South before thefat patrol and carbohydrate policezoomed in, the current set of well-

with a loaf that reflects my mothers deliciousconcoction. Ive made a few changes, namely usingchuck rather than ground beef, adding pork, vealor turkey as components. I count this dish, greathot or cold, among my food favorites.

    Sturdy Meatloaf

1/2 cup bread crumbs1/4 cup whole milk, cream or buttermilk1 medium onion2 large celery stalks1/2 red or yellow bell pepper1 large egg1 teaspoon each salt and pepper2 tablespoons ketchup1 tablespoon vinegar1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce1/2 teaspoon hot sauce1 pound ground chuck1/4 pound ground pork1/4 pound ground veal or turkey (cooked, acceptable)

Place the bread crumbs in a large bowl andsoak in the milk for a half hour. Place the onion, celery and bell pepper, cut into chunks, in aprocessor and chop to a small dice. Blend in theegg, salt and pepper, ketchup, vinegar,Worcestershire and hot sauce to the bread crumbsand blend very well. Add the diced vegetables tothe bread crumb mix and stir until well combined.

Add the meats and mix carefully so as not tomake dense. Mold onto parchment paper and placein a 350 degree oven for about 40 minutes, untilmeat thermometer reads 160 degrees. You maywish to cover the meatloaf during the last 10minutes of cooking with ketchup or tomato sauceto add color and richness. Mama did not; we had iton the side.

Seed catalogs have never had greater appeal.Exciting new varieties of vegetables call forexperimentation, much like sous vide cooks findtheir apparatus of like attraction. This summer Imgoing to be adventurous and plant potatoes just asI did in my Woodbine Circle garden decades ago.Oh, if I could just call up Daddy again to have himcome over and supervise. NCM

She was kind enough to sit downwith me and look at photographs ofCoweta women from the 19th andearly 20th centuries and of a U.S.first lady with Coweta kin.

actually have a life in, Carol said.In the affluence just before the

war, womens clothes were heavy. There often were eight to ten layersof undergarments, and the firsthoops were of steel. Corsets couldnot be washed, which meant womenwore underclothes over and underthem.

The advent of the crinoline in1856 and the invention of thesewing machine made it possiblefor women in the mid-1800s to haveclothes with literally pounds offabric, Carol said, and to quicklymake clothes with elaborate trimand designs.

While their mothers had wornmore delicate colors, women of the1860s had access to fabric withvibrant colors made from anilinedyes. These colors are often garish tomodern eyes. The psychedelic huespopular a century later had nothingon this group, Carol said.

After the war, dress styles weresimilar but simpler. Tea dressesessentially elaborate robesbecame popular for wearing aroundthe house. They were loose andflowing, very attractive, Carol said.

An economic boom in the1880s led to more elegant styles. Thebustle sent the voluminous fabriconce part of the hoop skirt into thebustle. Those fashions were modeledon the female celebrities of the day.

Those celebritiesQueenAlexandra of England, actressesSarah Bernhardt and Lily Langtrywere middle-aged women, and thefashions paid homage to the midlifefigure of womanhood. This trendcontinued into the next century.

Carol described a dress worn byClevie Bryant in a photo made inNewnan around 1906 as a pigeonbreast style that imitated themiddle-aged figure even foryounger women.

Julia Dent Grant, U.S. first ladyfrom 1869-1877, was a distant cousin ofNewnans Dent brothers, who built homesthat still stand on College Street andTemple Avenue. Mrs. Grants dress atnear left is, in fact, piecesa skirt andblouse with detachable sleeves and collar.Collars often buttoned. Sleeves generallywere held in place with elastic orsometimes ties, both of which tended tocut off circulation. The elaborate bun thatis part of Mrs. Grants hairdo may well bea hairpiece, perhaps fashioned from herown hair saved from brushing.

Laura Meadows Evans appears in a photo as a youngwoman in the 1870s. Her dress is probably of a natural fibercotton or wool. Even in summer, Carol said, women wore alot of wool. The fitted bodice is typical, and she is corseted.

Some highlights from Carols photo tour:

Fannie Bell Carmichael had been a widow more than 20 years when hertintype image was made in the 1870s. Jane Carmichael, Fannies daughter-in-law, iswearing an elegant gown, probably of silk, withdetachable sleeves and collar. Women who couldafford it liked to wear silk because it moved well.

Sallie and AnnieThompson, photographedwith their brother in 1908,are attired in shirtwaistblouses and jackets andskirts. Sallies dress is clearlyabout ankle length. Womensclothing became morebusiness-like, more formal, and less cumbersome, because many of them weregoing to work.

  • Throughout that half century, womenwho were poorer still tried to mimic thepopular styles. We all want to befashionable, Carol noted. Brooches werean expected accent, and women in allincome ranges wore them. A poor womansbrooch might be tin, sometimes gilded orpainted, with a glass jewel.

Servant women were the exception, wearing practical outfits that usuallyconsisted of a skirt and blouse or a dresswith a single undergarment. Carol notedthe servants were, ironically, probably alot more comfortable than the wealthierwomen for whom they worked.

With a little help from Carol Healy,I discovered a swath of Cowetashistoryvividly illustrated in fabric andthread. NCM

Nancy Hindsman Trammell, in a tintype from the1870s, wears a Zouave jacket, inspired by Civil Warmilitary uniforms. The striping at the cuffs imitates militarytrim, and some jackets even had epaulettes.

Each Sunday morning he watchedmembers of Macedonia BaptistChurch scurry between two worshipservices and Sunday School. Thechurch was growing! But Jeff craved afew calm moments to visit withfriends, members and visitors. Wouldthe sweet aroma of doughnuts andcoffee bring folks together? Jeff visiteda bakery the following Saturday andwalked away with several boxes oftreatsdonated and Macedonia-bound! Each week Jeff broughtdonated day-old doughnuts tochurch, and a Sunday fellowshiptradition was born.

End of story? Not even close!

The bakery contributed moreand more, eventually too much foreven a group of hungry Baptists.Wanting to share the bounty, Jeff didsome research. He learned CowetaCounty is rich in resources forfamilies facing emergencies, batteredwomen seeking a new start, children

with special needs and residentsneeding food. The economicdownturn increased the number ofpeople needing help due to losthouses, jobs and financial security.

As a child, Jeff knew hunger andthat memory fueled his passion tohelp others. He made a list of local

agencies and first contacted LindaKirkpatrick of Community WelcomeHouse, a safe house for batteredwomen. Women leaving abusivehomes move quickly, seeking safetyfor themselves and their children. There is no time to pack, and theirneeds are many: food, of course,

Jeff Perry originally had the idea to share donated, day-old doughnuts during the Sunday School hour at church. Soonhe realized there were plenty of food donations that needed to be matched up with needy individuals and families.Above and opposite, he and wife Yolanda load up the Perry Bread Truck with donations.

along with clothes, shoes, andpersonal articles for them and theirchildren. Jeff supports WelcomeHouse and other agencies, includingthe Coweta Community Food Pantry,Angels House and thrift stores whohelp fund such local organizations. He also helps individuals and familiesin need.

As Jeff s efforts grew, a friendasked, Have you checked with localgrocery stores? Publix agreed todonate items from their own bakeryincluding breads, cakes, pies, muffinsand cookies. Jeff gathers items fromPublix at least twice weekly, inventories the goods and distributesthem to the most appropriate agency.Others learned of Jeff s quiet ministryand began supporting his efforts. Hehas distributed ace bandages, toys, vitamins, dishes, birthday cakes and

party supplies. Seasonal decorations(displays for Easter, Thanksgiving,Christmas, etc.) are donated afterbeing used, and Jeff stores them untilthe following year. Anything sold in astore is a possible donation. Afterliving andworking in thecounty for morethan a decade,Perry knows thework of eachagency andmatches thedonations to theirspecific needs. That is why arecent donation ofbreast pumps wentto a pregnancycenter instead of achildrens home!

Several timeseach week, hisPerry Bread Truckrolls down citystreets andcountry roads, completely packedwhen he leavesand completelyempty when he

    with you. Others would disagree,too.

I havent exactly been a modelcitizen, Jeff smiles. He was a smallkid with a quick temper that gavehim plenty of bruises and black eyes.As he grew, he worked out and beganwinning his fights. He will fight younow, but only if you are hurtingsomeone he loves. His historyincludes drugs, alcohol, some prettywild times, and a night or two in jail.A few bad marriages and a bullet stilllodged in his shoulder bear witness toproblems in his younger days.

    So what changed thistemperamental troublemaker?

I grew up, Jeff reflects. Ineeded to change, wanted to bebetter, and I found God. Since Iveneeded help myself, I want to helpothers.

The most amazing change inJeff s life occurred when he

reconnected on Facebook withYolanda Dooley, a classmate fromthe Newnan High School class of74. After graduation, Yolandamarried and moved to Louisiana. She was in an abusive marriage untilshe escaped with a few clothes and acar that barely made it back toGeorgia. She lived with familymembers until she and Jeff fell inlove and married in 2011. Now twopassengers occupy the Perry BreadTruck as it roams around thecounty.

Yolanda and Jeff remaindedicated to serving others eventhough both have lost jobs due todownsizing amid the uncertaineconomy. Many days they barelyhave money to buy gas for the breadtruck. Somehow the money appearsand they distribute their goods.Decorations and non-perishableitems that are not delivered are stored

in a spare bedroom at their home.Smiling, Yolanda states, I didnt

know I was moving into awarehouse!

She is as dedicated to their workas her husband. Though both areseeking fulltime employment, it ishard to imagine how they could findthe time. They have spent countlesshours locating lifes leftovers andmatching them to those whodesperately need them, withoutfanfare or fireworks, for a decade. Jeffand Yolanda Perry have facedandcontinue to facelifes challenges. But their needs will not stop thequiet ministry of the Perry BreadTruck.

We could all use a lesson fromtwo unlikely heroes.

Grow up. Make peace withyour past. Give thanks for yourblessings. And keep on paying itforward! NCM
