Hillview Speedway Newman hosted their last race meet for the 2013/2014 season on Saturday 8 March. Right from when the gates opened to the final race, it was all full steam ahead. Good racing was experienced by all present. Fortunately there were no major accidents.
The juniors put on a good race and it was fantastic to see them getting out there and having a go. Productions were up and running like always.

Snake CatchersAnother snake handler, whose details you may wish to keep on hand, is Derek McArtney who catches and relocates snakes or lizards from Newman to bush areas. He is an authorised DPaW (Department of Parks and Wildlife) reptile rescuer.

Dogs to be MicrochippedThe Department of Local Government and Communities advises that all cats were to have a microchip implanted by 1 November 2013 as were all dogs being registered for the first time or changing owners.
All dangerous dogs and dangerous dog breeds were to be done before 30 November last year. All dogs will need to receive the implant before 1 November 2015 regardless of age or length of ownership.
The microchip includes owner contact details and details of the dog such as sterilisation, breed, age, gender and the like. While it can be implanted without a general anesthetic, considered doing it sooner if your dog is receiving medical treatment to avoid an extra procedure.
Pastoral Lease RenewalsAll existing pastoral leases in Western Australia were granted under the repealed Land Act 1933 and expire on 30 June 2015. All pastoral leases renewed on 1 July 2015 will be granted for the same term and on substantially the same conditions as the current pastoral leases. The current renewal process commenced in 1990, at which time 23 pastoral leases, mainly small historical leases in the south west land division, were informed that they would not be considered for renewal due to viability considerations. Renewal processes are underway for most other leases.
Stay VigilantWe are again reminded to stay vigilant with regards to road safety. The Easter holidays will mean that children crossing roads will not be as predictable with regards to school times and locations.
To address some other safety concerns, additional CCTV has been installed around the Shire.
Residents and companies are asked to keep their vehicles locked when not in use, and keys not kept in predictable spots such as under the wheel arch, sun visor, or floor mat. It has been made aware that Newman is seen as a ‘soft target’ for vehicle theft and has even attracted people from distant towns to the area for this exact purpose. The Police may (and have) taken keys out of unsecured vehicles in town, in the LIA, and airport parking, and held them until the owner comes to reclaim them.
It may be still be hot outside but that does not stop the people of the East Pilbara from participating in team sports – indoors!
The sports loving people of Newman have shown overwhelming support to participate in a new indoor sports programme at Newman Recreation Centre.

elevated levels of silica (10-15%). With a brownish tinge and many cavities, the display has an average grade of 56% iron.
The Hematitic Iron Ore is sourced from Mt Whaleback. Its name is derived from the Greek word for blood; haima. It has a deep blue colour, however, when scratched it develops a red-purple colour like that of blood. It is often clean from iron ore contaminants such as alumina, silica and phosphorous.
The 3516 Caterpillar’s 16-cyclinder, four-stroke engine’s gross power is 1750 RPM and delivers 2160 HP and provides electronic communication of functions between the engine and other power train components for optimum performance.
It is worth having a look and reading the background information for those who are familiar with mining operations and those who are not.

A collaborative art installation featuring artists from Martumili is being exhibited at the Adelaide Biennial until May this year.
The collaboration between Lynette Wallworth, Martu artists from the Pilbara region, and Antony from Antony and the Johnsons has resulted in a contemporary installation comprising sound, song, painting and the moving image.
Martumili Artists at Adelaide Biennial “The Shire of East Pilbara is thrilled that artists from Martumili are being represented in the Adelaide Biennial and that their story is being shared around the country,” said Shire President Lynne Craigie.
Artists Lynette Wallworth and Antony spent time in late 2013 in the Pilbara, living and working alongside Martu artists Kumpaya Girgirba, Yikartu Bumba, Karnu (Nancy Taylor), Ngamaru Bidu, Janice Yuwali Nixon, RR (Reena Rogers), Thelma Judson and Nola Taylor. The resulting installation captures this unique, cross-cultural exchange.
Established in 1990, the Adelaide Biennial has a 25-year history and is the country’s longest running survey of contemporary Australian art.Warman Avenue

When families living in remote communities separate, often one parent wants to relocate with the children. If the other parent does not consent to this happening, or there are already parenting orders in place, the relocating parent may be prevented from moving without an order from the Court – a Relocation Order.
When determining whether a parent should be allowed (or not) to relocate, the Court will think about what is in the best interest of the child or children. It considers such things as:
• Proposals for the children to spend time with the non-relocating parent, including the practicality and expense of communicating with the parent.
• The children’s existing relationship with the non-relocating parent and other people of significance (including grandparents, extended family, friends and school) and the impact on the children if they leave those relationships.
• The need to protect children from physical or psychological harm (from being subjected to, or witnessing, abuse, family violence or neglect).

• The distance and permanent nature of the move.
• Depending on their age, the wishes of the children.
• Each parent’s ability to provide for the child’s needs and the extent to which each parent has or has not previously met their parenting responsibilities.
• Whether the parent the child lives with has been the primary carer and is the preferred parent for the child to live with.
• The availability of accommodation and support for the parent with the primary care of the children.
• Any other fact the Court thinks is relevant.
Legal advice should be sought before moving away with your children, particularly if the other parent does not consent to this happening. If you move without their consent, or a Court Order, the non-relocating parent can file an application for a recovery order directing that the children be returned.
Recovery Orders will be discussed in the next edition of the Newman News.
Saving Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE) which actively works to rescue, rehome and care for domestic pets, could not run without the kind hearts of the people in Newman.
They would like to take the time to appreciate Graeme McPherson who has always given generously and, with many hours in the day, built bikes to sell and offering to do repairs with all proceeds going to SAFE.
The McPherson Family together has raised over $3,000 all of which has been donated to SAFE Newman. This has helped immensely with all rescue animals that have come into care and has gone towards vet care and bills.
This special family are now leaving town and SAFE would like to say a very big thank you for everything they have done for SAFE. Your generosity and support will never be forgotten.
The McPherson family also adopted a SAFE kitten and goat Penelope who will both be going to their new home too. We wish you all the best in your travels and thank you for helping the rescue animals of Newman.

On Saturday 8 March 2014 the ladies of Newman came together for the annual International Women's Day event, and what an evening it was with the oh-so-funny Cal Wilson as master of ceremony for the night! There were many laughs had.
The laughs continued as keynote speaker Priya Cooper OAM, an inductee into the 2011 WA International Women's Day hall of fame, took to the stage and spoke of her determination as a 12 year old to make something of herself and not allow her disability to stop her from achieving her goals.
Throughout Priya's address there were some very crucial points that all women within the room could relate too, especially when Priya touched on her darkest moment during the 2000 Sydney Olympics when she felt she could not reach the success of her two previous Olympic meets and it took just one person to believe in her enough to put her back on track ... Many have reached those moments in life where the most unexpected person has given us the strength to shake off the negative and get back to who we really are. Needless to say, Priya went on to win gold, the gold that is held most dear to her!
It was a bumper year this year in Newman with a record 24 nominees being read out but there can be only one winner and, after three years of nominations, it was very fitting indeed that (at last) Gerry Parsons was awarded the 2014 Newman International Woman of the Year!
Gerry was shocked at being ‘crowned’ that she had to choke down tears when the lovely Sister Betty, the previous year’s winner, proudly handed Gerry's her prize. The prize was a stunning yellow diamond pendant set in gold, kindly donated by Artisan Jewellers in Bunbury and South Hedland.
Gerry was nominated for her tireless dedication to junior sports in Newman
for the past decade (and then some), as well as her commitment as a Shire Councillor. She thanked her family and in particular, her husband, as her biggest supporters. Like many volunteers, without that support system at home she would not be able to give as much as she does to our town. Congratulations Gerry, a well deserving recipient!

The organising committee would also like to extend a HUGE thank you to our volunteers including the Tigers Football and Sporting Club behind the bar, the lovely mum’s from Newman Primary School for assisting Richard from the Seasons to plate up the food, and the South Newman Primary School mum’s for washing dishes and serving the tables. This night would not have been such a success without the help of community members.
A BIG thanks to Jeff Doggett for driving all the ladies home at the end of the evening and Bob (Kiwi Bob) Nicholson for being our crowd controller on the night.
Nicole Willis, Newman Mainstreet Project’s coordinator said, “A lot of positive feedback was received throughout the night about the extraordinary transformation of the gym and I would just like to reflect on the old adage ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ and with that I would like to thank my dedicated IWD Committee of; Richelle Hagner, Amy Jenssen, Shelley Mildred, Amanda Reilly, Peta Morrell, Renae Smith, Sarah Stampfii and Alison McKenzie because although I had a vision, without these women behind me the night would not be as successful and breath taking as it was and I am humbled and honoured to work along side these dedicated and community minded women, who had to put up with me (more to the point)!”

On Saturday 22 February, people around the State competed in the highly regarded iconic event, the HBF Rottnest Channel Swim, which is a 20 km open water swim from Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island. Newman holds this event virtually in the Newman Aquatic Centre.
The swimming community of Newman really appreciates this event. With water temperature at a lovely 28 degrees, thirty-six competitors in five teams took to the water supported by family and friends with a few customers supporting their efforts by placing some money in the charity tins.
All money raised went to the Royal Flying Doctors Service who provide a fantastic and essential service for Newman and the North West.
Andrew Price, Coordinator Aquatic Services, said the highlight for him was “Being able to enjoy the pool on my day off with friends and customers.

Andrew’s team swam for 1 km/20 lap intervals and found the swim not too tough but ended the day with tight shoulders. He will be looking into having a massage therapist attending next year. Competitors are now looking forward to the Newman Triathlon on 6 April 2014.
