How will we work out our differences?

When I meet with couples prior to marriage I often hear the question: “How will we work out ourdifferences?” He likes football, I like travel. She likes eating at home, I like restaurants. One is a saver, the other is a spender. One likes DYI and the other has the handyman on speed dial. One thing I learnedabout relationships: there will be differences and conflicts. Here is some typical advice I give for facingour differences:

Both take responsibility for the relationship. Both strive to see conflict as a possibility for growth, expectconflict and grow to be okay with it. Both commit to dealing with disagreements positively. Both treatconflicts as problems to solve rather than an opportunity to attack the other. Both practice intentionalcommunication. Both practice putting the best construction on our worst statements. Both be willing tomake compromises and sacrifices for the other and the relationship.

We make a significant change in June to our worship life as we combine two worship styles into oneworship time at 10:00AM. Thiswill take some adjustment fromall of ourmembers. Somememberswhoattend only the early service don’t realize that Deacon Lynn and I wear robes (called albs) and vestmentsduring worship. Those who have made a habit of attending only the late service don’t realize the earlyservice doesn’t include robes and uses an ensemble leadership, and sings some newer contemporaryChristian songs.

Howwill we everwork out our differences? In the short run onCommunion Sundaysworshipwill reflectour liturgical, 11AM format. On non-communion Sundayswewill offer the 8:30AMworship style. Wewill combine leadership frombothworship services involving bothworship ensemble and choirmembersas music leaders. I hope and trust it will be inspiring. Yet, there will be differences that some of you willnotice, in which case I would suggest the following:

Both take responsibility for the relationship. Whenyou come toworship onSunday take responsibilityfor your worship. Come prepared to worship God. Don’t wait for someone in the worship team or the

pastor to find and push the “right button”within you that activates worship. I think of passiveworship likethe old joke I heard about football games: in a football stadium there are 22 professionals working hardand dying for a rest, while 40,000 bystanders are dying of lack of exercise, sitting back criticizing likeprofessionals. If you come to worship expecting and hoping to meet God you’ll have a better worshipexperience. Worship is a contact sport not a spectator sport. Participate. You’ll get much more out of itif you get yourself into it.

Both strive to see conflict as a possibility for growth, expect conflict and grow to be okay with it.Certainly you, likeme, don’t like everything aboutworship. Some songs are just a no-go forme. However, there are times when our musicians prevail upon me and I find the lyrics or music a powerful contributionto the theme of our worship. Let a new worship style stretch your appreciation for seeing God. Strive tobe ok with differences.

Both commit to dealing with disagreements positively. After trying our new schedule for the summerour leadershipwillwant feedback about theworship experience and schedule. Like the advice I give in pre-marriage counseling, express both things you appreciate along with the things you are hoping to improve.

Both treat conflicts as problems to solve rather than an opportunity to attack the other.Keep inmindthat 99% of our worship leaders are volunteers and all of us are doing our best to make our experienceworshipful. Sometimes worship is wonderful, sometimes completely flat and uninspiring (this reality isperplexing to your leaders too). Keep your criticism aimed at improving everyone’s experience not onlyyour worship preference.

Bothpractice intentional communication.Speakand listen. Seek to inspire inwhat you say, and respondwith worshipful reflection. Become a partner with your church leadership (volunteer and paid staff), notonly a participant consumer. Seek to understand what makes worship meaning to others.

Both practice putting the best construction on our worst statements. Remember that people makemistakes and have “off” days. Don’t measure our volunteers by the latest professional worship leader yousaw at the Disney Concert Hall. If your worship leaders know you are praying for them and are 100% intheir corner they will be free to reach higher and our corporate experience of worship will rise together.

Both be willing to make compromises and sacrifices for the other and the relationship. As you takeresponsibility by arriving prepared forworship, remember also thatworship is not about you. It is forGod.There are times when the “brief order for confession and forgiveness” is exactly what the new person inthe back row really needs, even if it leaves you cold. God may need those words to turn that soul back toChrist. Not every hymn will be to your liking, but not everyone will like the praise chorus that lifts yoursoul. Be in prayer that worship reaches the person sitting across the row from you, and pray the same foryourself.

Worship comes from an old English word meaning to “ascribe worth.” In worship we place ourselves inthe presence of the God who created all things and who, in love, radically sacrifices for us on the cross.

God isworthy to haveworth ascribed, added, multiplied and lifted.Whenwedo soworship can also becomea worthy blessing to our lives because it connects us with the Holy, the Source, the pulse that empowers allcreation.

What Makes a Dad(author unknown)

God took the strength of amountain,

The majesty of a tree,

The warmth of a summer sun,

The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,

The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages,

The power of the eagle's flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,

The faith of a mustard seed,

The patience of eternity,

The depth of a family need,

Then God combined thesequalities.

When there was nothing more toadd,

He knew his masterpiece wascomplete

And so, He called it - DAD

2017marks 19 years for the Prayer Shawl Ministry, which was founded in 1998 by Janet Severi Bristow and Victoria Galo. The twomet while attendingWomen’s Leadership Institute at TheHartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut. They joinedtogether with the idea of combining a love of knitting and crochet with the desire to reach out to those in need of comfortas well as joy.

There is a commonmisconception that prayer shawls are notmade for happy andpositive events. However, they canbeasmuch a celebration of life as they can of loss. Any instance where the crafter is thinking of someone. In the words of thePrayer Shawl Ministry:

“Shawls can be used for: undergoing medical procedures; as a comfort after a loss or in times of stress; during bereavement; prayeror meditation; commitment or marriage ceremonies; birthing, nursing a baby; bridal shower or wedding gift; leading ritual; duringan illness and recovery; ministering to others; graduation, birthday, anniversary, ordination, holiday gifts; or just socializing.”

President’s Corner

I am personally looking forward to seeing all of our church family worshiping together as we enter the One ServiceSunday schedule, beginning June 3rd. I hope you are, too. We will be closely monitoring the parking lot to makesure ample spots are available so we can make alternative plans should our lot overfloweth.

With Elinor moving, Carla Stoffel will be at the piano for most of this summer and we thank her for her willingnessto step in. We are also seeking some new and different musical experiences. Aleta is praying that the one servicewill bring her additional choir members so, if God moves you to share your voice He gave you, let Aleta know.

Thismonth, our Council spotlight is on ScottWolfe. Scott chairs the Development Committee. His responsibilitiesinclude evaluating capital improvements, oversee implementation of facility improvement projects and bringimprovement projects to completion. With his expertise, we are blessed to have him on Council in this position. If that is enough, read his personal story below.

I first came to New Hope (then Westlake) Lutheran Church in 1997, and immediately found a place whereI felt welcome. Since then, I was married (by Pastor Craig) to my wife Jennette, and we have had all six ofour kids baptized at New Hope (the latest being Lily late last year). I’m currently serving on the ChurchCouncil as the chair of theDevelopment Committee andworking toward undertaking building improvementsand potentially a renovation of our Sanctuary.

In my spare time, I help Jennette with the Wolfe kid taxi service, am the designated baby bedtime rocker, sneak off to Disneyland once in a while, and volunteer for a number of community organizations (latelyfocusing on the Boy Scouts). Late at night, I can usually be found working toward a doctoral degree. Duringthe day, I serve as the Planning Director/Deputy City Manager for the City of Westlake Village.

The Council looks forward to hearing your feedback on anything but especially the changes to our worshipexperience with new service time, increased communion opportunities, varied musical experiences or whateverGod brings to New Hope. We are truly in this together and here for you and want to hear from you.

Happy Father’s Day to all of you who have generously shared guidance and love to a child.

Blessings to all, Gaye

Stewardship MusingsBy Karen Ingram

Our call to Stewardship means we use the resources God has given to us to do God’s workto: spread theGospel, care for our neighbors, protect the earth and all Godhas placed uponit (water, flora and fauna) and around it (the air we breathe), and say thank you for all ofthese blessings. New Hope practices stewardship by collecting food for Manna, sendingtoiletries and socks to ourmilitary, giving school supplies andbackpacks to thekids atManyMansions. Through their summer service projects, our youth learn about stewardship oftime as they help others in the community. The ELCA has a day of service coming up onSeptember 9th - “God’s Work. Our Hands.” How can New Hope show Agoura Hills God’slove in action on September 9th? Please contact Karen Ingram with your ideas(805-496-7097 or [email protected]). Thank you.

The of the FarmL U T H E R A N R E T R E A T S , C A M P S & C O N F E R E N C E S

Greetings from Luther Glen Retreat Center, Camp & Farm,

What’s a farm without a barn? Imagine a school without a classroom or a house without a kitchen. A farm without a barn is not complete!

Luther Glen is building a barn and we need your help. We are excited to launch “The Hear t of the Farm Campaign.” Everyone is being asked to respond in some way. Here are a few ideas:

• Attend the Luther Glen Barn Raising Fundraising event on June 9, 2018.• Use the envelope in this brochure and mail your check or donate online at www.LRCChome.com/donate and help raise the barn.• Follow updates on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/LRCCSoCal. • Follow us at www.LRCChome.com/barn and watch the thermometer rise.

The goal is $150,000, but we still need to raise funds for our general fund each year… so we are asking for ‘above and beyond’ contributions to your annual giving.

If you are not an annual suppor ter of LRCC, it’s probably because our par tnership has lost focus. This would be a great year to star t suppor ting your local Lutheran Bible camps, because without your suppor t, we’re like a farm without a barn!
